Το Plants of the World Online των Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew αναγνωρίζει σήμερα 12 είδη στο γένος Ruppia.

Ruppia drepanensis

Ruppia maritima

Ruppia spiralis

The family Ruppiaceae, known as the widgeon-grass family, is a small family of aquatic flowering plants belonging to the order Alismatales. It includes only the genus Ruppia, whose species grow mainly in shallow brackish or saline waters.

The family has an almost worldwide distribution and occurs in coastal lagoons, salt marshes, seasonal pools, estuaries, brackish lakes and, more rarely, in fresh inland waters.

The size of the family differs considerably according to the taxonomic approach. It includes 1 genus and between 1 and 12 species worldwide, because the boundaries between several morphologically similar species are difficult to determine. Plants of the World Online of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew currently recognizes 12 species in the genus Ruppia.

According to the organized checklist of the flora of Cyprus, the family Ruppiaceae is represented in Cyprus by 1 genus and 3 taxa. All three are native non-endemic species. No endemic, alien, naturalized, hybrid or uncertain-status taxa of the family are recorded.

General characteristics

The members of Ruppiaceae are submerged aquatic angiosperms. They may be annual or perennial and possess slender rhizomes or creeping stems from which roots develop and anchor the plants in the soft substrate.

The stems are slender, flexible and strongly branched. Their flexibility allows them to follow the movement of the water without breaking easily.

The leaves are simple, very narrow, linear or thread-like and usually possess a single principal vein. They are adapted to permanent submergence and lack the typical stomata that characterize the leaves of terrestrial plants.

The flowers are extremely small and simplified, without conspicuous sepals or petals. They are usually bisexual and formed in small inflorescences, which may be carried towards the water surface by elongated or coiled stalks.

The fruits are small, one-seeded and often borne on long stalks. They may float for some time or be transported by water and aquatic birds.

Aquatic but not exclusively marine plants

Ruppia species are often discussed together with seagrasses because they can form submerged meadows in coastal saline and brackish waters.

However, they are not restricted to the marine environment. They can grow in brackish lagoons, salt marshes, estuaries, coastal lakes and inland pools with varying salinity.

The ability to survive in waters whose salinity changes considerably is one of the principal ecological characteristics of the family.

The family Ruppiaceae in Cyprus

In Cyprus, Ruppia species occur mainly in shallow coastal wetlands, salt marshes, lagoons, brackish lakes, seasonal pools and other aquatic habitats with slow-moving or standing water.

Populations may display considerable seasonal variation. In years with sufficient rainfall and a suitable duration of inundation, the plants can form dense submerged stands. In drier years, they may be greatly reduced or not visible.

In seasonally drying sites, the plants survive by means of resistant seeds and, in certain species or populations, through underground stems or other resistant vegetative organs.

The Cypriot species

Ruppia drepanensis

Ruppia drepanensis is a Mediterranean aquatic species associated mainly with shallow saline or brackish waters. It may occur in temporary or seasonal pools, where it completes its life cycle before the habitat dries completely.

Ruppia maritima

Ruppia maritima is a widely distributed aquatic plant with considerable tolerance of changes in salinity. It occurs in coastal lagoons, salt marshes, estuaries, brackish lakes and other shallow aquatic habitats.

It can form dense underwater meadows, particularly when the water remains relatively clear and the substrate is not subjected to severe disturbance.

Ruppia spiralis

Ruppia spiralis is characterized by the elongated and often spirally coiled stalks of its inflorescences and fruits. It grows in saline or brackish waters, often in lagoons and other coastal wetlands.

The taxonomic separation of certain species of the Ruppia maritima complex is difficult. Hybridization, polyploidy and considerable morphological variation have resulted in different taxonomic approaches. In the organized checklist of the flora of Cyprus, Ruppia spiralis is maintained as a separate species.

Salinity tolerance

Ruppia species are adapted to environments where salinity can change abruptly. Following heavy rainfall, the water may become almost fresh, while summer evaporation can cause the salt concentration to increase considerably.

The plants cope with these changes through physiological mechanisms that maintain water and salt balance in their tissues. Growth, flowering and seed production are also adjusted to the duration of inundation and seasonal changes in salinity.

Considerable ecological tolerance does not mean that the plants can survive under all conditions. Extreme pollution, prolonged absence of water and permanent alteration of the hydrological regime can cause the disappearance of local populations.

Pollination and reproduction

Pollination takes place in the water or near its surface. The inflorescences of certain species are raised towards the surface, where pollen is released and transported.

Following fertilization, the stalks may elongate or coil. The developing fruits are carried to a suitable position within the water column or close to the substrate.

The family reproduces both by seed and vegetatively through the growth of rhizomes and stems. Vegetative growth allows dense stands to develop rapidly when environmental conditions are suitable.

Dispersal

The small fruits and seeds can be transported by water currents. They may also become attached to mud on the feet and feathers of aquatic birds or survive after being consumed and be transported to other wetlands.

Dispersal by aquatic birds may explain the appearance of Ruppia species in isolated coastal and inland pools.

The resistant seeds can remain in the sediment during the dry period and germinate when the wetland is flooded again.

Ecological importance

Submerged Ruppia stands form important habitats within shallow wetlands. They provide shelter and breeding sites for aquatic invertebrates, small fish and other animals.

The leaves, stems and seeds provide food for waterbirds. The international common name widgeon-grass is related to the importance of the plants as food for ducks and other aquatic birds.

The rhizomes and roots stabilize soft sediment and reduce the resuspension of particles. Dense stands slow water movement, trap suspended material and can contribute to maintaining water clarity.

The plants absorb nutrients from the water and sediment. However, excessive nutrient concentrations may cause the growth of phytoplankton and algae, reducing the light reaching the submerged stands.

Importance for the wetlands of Cyprus

The coastal wetlands of Cyprus are important staging areas for migratory and wintering birds. Ruppia stands contribute to the productivity of these ecosystems and provide food for many aquatic species.

The presence of the plants may indicate that a wetland maintains suitable depth, salinity, clarity and duration of inundation. Their absence, however, is not by itself evidence of degradation because populations display natural seasonal and annual fluctuations.

Threats and protection

The principal threats to the family Ruppiaceae in Cyprus are:

  • the drainage of coastal and seasonal wetlands,
  • water abstraction or diversion,
  • the construction of embankments and alteration of natural water circulation,
  • residential and tourism development,
  • pollution from wastewater, agricultural runoff and waste,
  • eutrophication,
  • excessive water turbidity,
  • dredging or mechanical disturbance of the bottom,
  • uncontrolled vehicle movement through salt marshes and seasonal pools,
  • the spread of competitive alien aquatic plants,
  • prolonged drought,
  • and rising temperatures caused by climate change.

The protection of the species depends primarily on conserving the entire hydrological system of the wetlands. Protecting only the places where the plants are observed is insufficient because the supply, circulation, depth and salinity of the water are determined by the entire drainage basin.
