Η οικογένεια περιλαμβάνει περισσότερα από 14.000 είδη παγκοσμίως, ενώ το Plants of the World Online των Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew αναγνωρίζει σήμερα 625 αποδεκτά γένη.

Asperula cypria
Rubia laurae

Text by George Konstantinou
The family Rubiaceae, known as the coffee, madder or bedstraw family, is one of the largest families of flowering plants. It belongs to the order Gentianales and includes herbs, shrubs, trees, climbing plants and, more rarely, epiphytes.
It has a worldwide distribution, but the greatest diversity of species and growth forms is found in tropical and subtropical regions. The family includes more than 14,000 species worldwide, while Plants of the World Online of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew currently recognizes 625 accepted genera.
The family includes plants of great economic importance, such as the coffee trees of the genus Coffea, the Cinchona species from which quinine originated, and the dye plant Rubia tinctorum.
According to the organized checklist of the flora of Cyprus, the family Rubiaceae is represented in Cyprus by 9 genera and 31 taxa: 28 native non-endemic species, 2 endemic species of Cyprus and 1 species of uncertain status. No alien, naturalized or hybrid taxa of the family are recorded.
General characteristics
The members of Rubiaceae display a great diversity of growth forms. The Cypriot taxa are mainly annual or perennial herbs, small subshrubs or plants with elongated stems that climb or are supported by other vegetation.
The leaves are simple and usually entire. They are arranged oppositely or in whorls. The stipules are positioned between the petioles of the opposite leaves and, in certain genera, resemble the normal leaves so closely that all the leaves appear to form a single whorl.
This is particularly evident in the genera Galium, Asperula, Cruciata, Crucianella and Rubia, in which several leaf-like organs appear to be arranged in a circle around the stem.
The flowers are usually small, actinomorphic and bisexual. The corolla usually consists of four or five fused petals and may be tubular, funnel-shaped or rotate.
The ovary is generally inferior and is one of the most important diagnostic features of the family. The fruit may be dry and divide into two one-seeded sections, or it may be fleshy, as occurs in many tropical members of the family.
The family Rubiaceae in Cyprus
In Cyprus, the family is represented mainly by its herbaceous Mediterranean flora. The largest Cypriot genus is Galium, with 14 taxa, followed by Asperula with 3 taxa, Crucianella with 4 taxa, and Cruciata, Rubia and Valantia with 2 taxa each.
The species of the family occur in cultivated fields, fallow land, along roadsides, in phrygana, scrub, forests, forest clearings, rocky slopes, rock crevices and mountain habitats.
Several annual species germinate following the first rains, develop during winter and flower in spring, completing their life cycle before the intense summer drought.

Endemic species of Cyprus
Asperula cypria
Asperula cypria is an endemic species of Cyprus and forms part of the specialized flora of the island’s mountain and rocky habitats.
It is a small herbaceous plant with narrow leaves arranged in whorls and small flowers. Its restricted geographical distribution increases the importance of protecting the natural localities in which it grows.
Rubia laurae
Rubia laurae is an endemic species of Cyprus with elongated stems and leaves arranged in conspicuous whorls. The stems can be supported by shrubs and other vegetation.
It occurs in rocky and shrubby places, where it forms a characteristic element of the endemic flora. The protection of natural scrub and rocky microhabitats is essential for its conservation.
Ecology of the Cypriot species
Species of Asperula, Crucianella, Cruciata, Sherardia and Valantia are mainly small herbs of open habitats. They occur in phrygana, grasslands, stony soils, fields, along roadsides, in forest clearings and rock crevices.
Galium aparine is known for its climbing or trailing stems, leaves and fruits, which bear small hook-like hairs. These allow it to attach itself to neighbouring plants, animals, clothing and other objects.
Most other Galium species are smaller annual or perennial herbs. Some prefer open and dry places, while others are associated with forests, mountain grasslands, shaded slopes or relatively moist soils.
Plocama calabrica is a perennial plant or small subshrub of dry, rocky and often limestone habitats. Its woody base and slender stems are adaptations to dry Mediterranean conditions.
Rubia tenuifolia and Rubia tinctorum have elongated stems that can climb or be supported by other shrubs. They grow in scrub, hedges, forest margins, stream valleys and disturbed places.
Theligonum cynocrambe is a small, usually annual plant occurring in shaded or semi-shaded places, at the base of rocks and walls and beneath shrubs.
Pollination and reproduction
The small flowers of most species are pollinated by insects, mainly small bees, flies and beetles. Despite their small size, they may produce nectar and provide a useful food source for small pollinators.
Heterostyly occurs in certain members of Rubiaceae, meaning that the lengths of the stamens and style differ between flowers on different plants. This mechanism limits self-fertilization and promotes cross-pollination.
Theligonum cynocrambe displays more specialized reproductive morphology and possesses unisexual flowers. Its pollination is more closely associated with the transport of pollen through the air.
Fruit dispersal
At maturity, the fruits of several herbaceous species divide into two one-seeded sections. Their surface may be smooth, hairy, prickly or covered with hook-like projections.
In Galium aparine, the fruits attach themselves to animal fur, bird feathers and human clothing. In this way, they are transported considerable distances from the parent plant.
Other species are dispersed by gravity, wind, surface water or the movement of soil by animals and human activities.
Ecological importance
The annual species of the family participate in the seasonal plant communities of fields, grasslands and phryganic habitats. They temporarily cover the ground during the rainy period and contribute to the production of organic matter.
The flowers provide food for small pollinators, while the seeds and fruits may be consumed by invertebrates, birds and small mammals.
The perennial and climbing species of Rubia and Plocama contribute to the structure of vegetation in scrub, hedges and rocky places.
Uses and economic importance
The most economically important member of the family worldwide is coffee, which is produced from the seeds of species of the genus Coffea.
Quinine, which played a fundamental role in the history of malaria treatment, was isolated from the bark of species of the genus Cinchona.
Rubia tinctorum, known as dyer’s madder or madder, was cultivated for centuries for its roots. Red pigments, principally alizarin and purpurin, were produced from them and used to dye textiles.
Certain species of the family have been used in traditional herbal medicine. Traditional use does not constitute proof of safety or effectiveness and should not be practised without appropriate scientific and medical guidance.
Taxon of uncertain status
Asperula stricta is recorded in the Cypriot checklist as a species of uncertain status. Further documentation is required to clarify its origin, distribution and the stability of its presence in Cyprus.
Maintaining a separate uncertain-status category prevents the arbitrary classification of the species as native or alien before sufficient evidence becomes available.
Threats and protection
The principal potential threats to members of the family in Cyprus are:
- the destruction of rocky and mountain habitats,
- the clearance of natural scrub,
- agricultural intensification,
- the use of herbicides,
- the destruction of field margins,
- residential and tourism development,
- quarrying and roadworks,
- fires,
- overgrazing,
- the spread of competitive alien plants,
- and climate change.
Particular priority should be given to the protection of the two endemic species, Asperula cypria and Rubia laurae, and the mountain, rocky and shrubby habitats in which they grow.
