Σύμφωνα με το Plants of the World Online των Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, η οικογένεια περιλαμβάνει περίπου 2.805 είδη, ενώ αναγνωρίζονται σήμερα 99 αποδεκτά γένη, περιλαμβανομένων ορισμένων υβριδικών γενών.

The family Rosaceae, known as the rose family, is one of the most important families of flowering plants. It belongs to the order Rosales and includes numerous wild, cultivated, ornamental and economically important plants.

It has an almost worldwide distribution but displays its greatest diversity in the temperate and subtropical regions of the Northern Hemisphere. According to Plants of the World Online of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, the family includes approximately 2,805 species, while 99 accepted genera, including certain hybrid genera, are currently recognized.

According to the organized checklist of the flora of Cyprus, the family Rosaceae is represented in Cyprus by 17 genera and 31 taxa: 17 native non-endemic taxa, 1 endemic subspecies of Cyprus, 12 alien or naturalized species and 1 hybrid. No taxa of uncertain status are recorded.

General characteristics

The members of Rosaceae display considerable morphological diversity. They include annual and perennial herbs, shrubs and trees. Some species possess thorns or thorn-like shoots, while others are creeping or climbing plants.

The leaves are usually alternate, simple or compound, with entire, toothed or lobed margins. Stipules are generally present and, in some genera, are fused to the base of the petiole.

The flowers are usually bisexual and actinomorphic. They generally possess five sepals and five free petals, although in certain species the petals are small or absent. The stamens are often numerous.

A characteristic feature of the family is the presence of the hypanthium, a cup-shaped or tubular structure formed from the base of the floral organs that surrounds or is connected with the ovary.

Great diversity of fruits

Rosaceae displays an exceptionally wide diversity of fruits:

  • In Prunus, the fruit is a drupe with a hard endocarp, as in almonds, apricots, cherries, plums and peaches.
  • In Malus, Pyrus, Cydonia and related genera, a pome is formed, a complex fleshy fruit in which the hypanthium also participates.
  • In Rosa, a rose hip is formed, enclosing numerous achenes.
  • In Rubus, the fruit consists of numerous small drupelets.
  • In Potentilla, Geum and Agrimonia, achenes are formed.
  • In Crataegus, Cotoneaster and Sorbus, small fleshy pome-like fruits are formed.

The family Rosaceae in Cyprus

In Cyprus, the family includes small herbs, low thorny shrubs, brambles, wild roses, hawthorns, wild pears and other trees or shrubs.

The native taxa occur in a wide variety of habitats, from dry phrygana and rocky slopes to forests, mountain scrub, grasslands, stream banks and seasonally moist soils.

Many of the alien or naturalized species are important fruit trees that have been cultivated in Cyprus for a long time. In certain cases, they survive or reproduce outside active cultivation, near old orchards, abandoned fields, villages and mountain areas.

Endemic taxon of Cyprus

Rosa micrantha subsp. chionistrae is an endemic subspecies of Cyprus and forms a characteristic element of the mountain flora of the Troodos Mountains.

It is a thorny shrub with compound leaves and pink flowers. It grows in mountain scrub, forest clearings, rocky slopes and other relatively cool places.

Its restricted geographical distribution makes the protection of its natural habitats from fires, roadworks, clearance and other changes to mountain vegetation important.

Ecology of the native taxa

Agrimonia eupatoria, the Geum species and the Potentilla species are herbaceous plants occurring mainly in grasslands, forest clearings, roadsides, on banks and in relatively cool or moist places.

Aphanes arvensis is a small annual plant of open soils, fields and grasslands. Because of its small size, it can easily be overlooked.

Crataegus azarolus and Crataegus monogyna are deciduous thorny shrubs or small trees. They occur along forest margins, in scrub, on mountain slopes, in stream valleys and in traditional agricultural landscapes. Their flowers are an important food source for insects, while their fruits are eaten by birds and mammals.

Pyrus syriaca is a deciduous tree or large shrub of forests, mountain scrub and rocky slopes. Its small fruits provide food for wildlife.

Rosa canina and Rosa corymbifera are thorny shrubs of forest margins, stream valleys, hedges and mountain habitats. Their fruits, the rose hips, often remain on the plants during autumn and winter.

Rubus sanctus grows mainly along stream banks, in stream valleys, around springs, in moist ditches and other places with increased soil moisture. It forms dense and thorny stands.

Sarcopoterium spinosum is one of the most characteristic low thorny shrubs of the eastern Mediterranean. It is a principal component of phryganic ecosystems and is extremely resistant to drought, grazing and high temperatures.

Pollination and dispersal

The flowers of Rosaceae produce pollen and often nectar, attracting bees, flies, beetles, butterflies and other insects. Flowering trees and shrubs can provide important seasonal food sources for pollinators.

Fleshy fruits are consumed by birds and mammals, which transport and disperse the seeds. The achenes of certain herbaceous species possess hairs, hooks or other structures that facilitate their attachment to animal fur.

Rubus species can also spread vegetatively when their long stems come into contact with the ground and take root.

Ecological importance

Members of the family provide nectar, pollen, fruits, shelter and nesting sites for a large number of animals. Thorny shrubs protect small birds, reptiles and mammals from predators.

The fruits of Rosa, Rubus, Crataegus, Cotoneaster, Pyrus and Sorbus are important food for wildlife. By consuming them, animals contribute to seed dispersal.

The roots of shrubs and trees stabilize soil on slopes and banks. Sarcopoterium spinosum and other shrubby species contribute to the structure and function of dry Mediterranean ecosystems.

Economic importance

Rosaceae is one of the most important families of fruit-producing plants. The family includes:

  • the apple, Malus domestica,
  • the pear, Pyrus communis,
  • the quince, Cydonia oblonga,
  • the loquat, Eriobotrya japonica,
  • the medlar, Mespilus germanica,
  • the almond, Prunus amygdalus,
  • the apricot, Prunus armeniaca,
  • the sweet cherry, Prunus avium,
  • the plum, Prunus domestica,
  • and the peach, Prunus persica.

Many species are also used as ornamental plants, grafting rootstocks, hedging plants or sources of timber. Roses have particular importance in floriculture, perfumery and the production of essential oils.

Toxicity and safe use

The edible fruits of many species are important foods. However, the seeds or stones of several Prunus species contain cyanogenic compounds that can release hydrogen cyanide when broken down.

The stones of wild or cultivated species should not be consumed without reliable knowledge of their safety. The edibility of the fleshy fruit does not mean that the seed or every other part of the plant is also safe.

Alien taxa

Most alien or naturalized taxa of the family in Cyprus are long-cultivated fruit trees. Their presence outside active cultivation may originate from abandoned orchards, discarded seeds or fruits, suckers and dispersal by animals.

Rubus discolor is an alien bramble that can form dense stands in moist or disturbed places. Its spread requires monitoring because dense stands may compete with local vegetation.

Hybridization

Crataegus ×sinaica is recorded in the Cypriot checklist as a hybrid. Hybridization is common in several genera of Rosaceae and can make the identification and classification of plants difficult.

Polyploidy, vegetative reproduction and apomixis also occur in the family. These phenomena have produced complex groups of related forms, particularly in genera such as Rubus, Rosa, Crataegus, Cotoneaster and Sorbus.

Threats and protection

The principal potential threats to the native members of the family in Cyprus are:

  • the destruction of forests and scrub,
  • fires,
  • the clearance of thorny shrubs and natural hedges,
  • agricultural intensification,
  • the abandonment of traditional agricultural landscapes,
  • the drying of streams and moist sites,
  • residential and tourism development,
  • roadworks and quarrying,
  • overgrazing,
  • the spread of alien plants,
  • and climate change.

Particular priority should be given to the protection of the endemic Rosa micrantha subsp. chionistrae and its mountain habitats. The conservation of stream valleys, natural hedges, forest margins and traditional orchards is also important.
