Το Plants of the World Online των Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew

Osyris alba
Thesium humile

Text by George Konstantinou
The family Santalaceae, known as the sandalwood family, is a family of flowering plants belonging to the order Santalales. It includes herbs, shrubs and trees that are mainly hemiparasitic and obtain part of their water and mineral nutrients from other plants.
The family has an almost worldwide distribution, with representatives in tropical, subtropical and temperate regions. In its modern broad taxonomic circumscription, it includes approximately 40–44 genera and more than 900 species worldwide. Plants of the World Online of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew currently recognizes 40 accepted genera.
The classification of the family has changed considerably. In its modern broad circumscription, it includes certain genera formerly placed in separate families, including Viscaceae. For this reason, the numbers of genera and species differ between older and more recent botanical sources.
According to the organized checklist of the flora of Cyprus, the family Santalaceae is represented in Cyprus by 2 genera and 2 taxa. Both are native non-endemic species. No endemic, alien, naturalized, hybrid or uncertain-status taxa of the family are recorded.
General characteristics
The members of Santalaceae may be annual or perennial herbs, shrubs, trees or aerial parasitic plants. The two Cypriot species are green hemiparasites and retain the ability to photosynthesize.
The leaves are usually simple, entire and alternate. In certain species they are well developed, while in others they are reduced to small scales. The green species produce organic substances through photosynthesis but depend to varying degrees on their host plants.
The flowers are usually small and not particularly conspicuous. They may be bisexual or unisexual. The perianth generally consists of three to six lobes, which may be greenish, yellowish or reddish.
The stamens are usually positioned opposite the perianth lobes. The ovary is inferior or semi-inferior, and its internal structure displays several specializations connected with the evolutionary history of the order Santalales.
The fruit may be dry or fleshy. In Osyris alba, it is fleshy and turns red when mature, while in Thesium humile it is small and dry.
Hemiparasitism
The two Cypriot species are root hemiparasites. This means that they photosynthesize and produce much of the organic material they require, but they connect with the roots of neighbouring plants to obtain water and dissolved mineral nutrients.
The connection is established through specialized organs known as haustoria. The haustoria develop on the roots of the hemiparasite and penetrate the vascular tissues of the host plant.
An individual may connect simultaneously with more than one plant and is not necessarily restricted to a single host species. Potential hosts may include herbs, shrubs or trees growing nearby.
Hemiparasitism provides a considerable advantage on dry or nutrient-poor soils, where water and mineral nutrients are limited. At the same time, it creates complex ecological relationships between the hemiparasite and the surrounding plant community.
The family Santalaceae in Cyprus
In Cyprus, the family is represented by an evergreen or semi-evergreen shrub, Osyris alba, and a small annual herb, Thesium humile.
The two species have very different appearances but share a root-hemiparasitic way of life. They occur mainly in open Mediterranean habitats, scrub, phrygana, rocky slopes, dry grasslands and forest margins.

The Cypriot species
Osyris alba
Osyris alba is a much-branched evergreen or semi-evergreen shrub with slender green stems. The leaves are simple, narrow, entire and relatively leathery.
The flowers are small, yellow-green and not particularly conspicuous. Male and female flowers usually occur on separate plants, and the species is therefore generally dioecious.
The fruit is a small, fleshy, almost spherical drupe that becomes red or orange-red when mature. The fruits are conspicuous against the green stems and attract birds.
The species occurs in scrub, maquis vegetation, phrygana, rocky slopes, forest margins, stream valleys and other open or semi-shaded Mediterranean habitats.
Thesium humile
Thesium humile is a small annual herb with slender, erect or ascending stems. The leaves are very narrow, and the small flowers are formed along the upper parts of the stem.
Because of its small size, narrow leaves and greenish flowers, it can easily be overlooked among low vegetation.
It occurs in open places, dry grasslands, phrygana, stony soils, fields, along roadsides and in other habitats with low vegetation.
As an annual plant, it completes its life cycle during the rainy period and spring. Its seeds remain in the soil during the dry summer.
Host plants and ecological relationships
The roots of Osyris alba and Thesium humile can form haustoria on the roots of various neighbouring plants. Their successful development therefore depends not only on the soil and climate but also on the composition of the local plant community.
The destruction of surrounding plants may indirectly affect the hemiparasites, even when the hemiparasites themselves are not directly removed. Their conservation requires the protection of the entire microhabitat and not only the individual plants.
Hemiparasitism does not always result in the death of the host. Under natural conditions, the plants coexist within a dynamic system of relationships. Heavy infestation or environmental stress may, however, reduce the growth of certain hosts.
Pollination
The small flowers of Osyris alba produce nectar and pollen and are visited by small bees, flies, beetles and other insects.
Because male and female flowers are usually present on separate individuals, pollen must be transported between different shrubs. The presence of male and female plants within a relatively short distance is necessary for successful fruit production.
The small flowers of Thesium humile are also pollinated mainly by small insects, although self-fertilization may also occur in such small and simple flowers.
Fruit and seed dispersal
The fleshy fruits of Osyris alba are eaten by birds. The seeds are transported through their digestive system and deposited with their droppings in new places.
Dispersal by birds allows the species to reach isolated scrub, hedges and forest margins. For successful establishment, however, the young plant must occur close to suitable host roots.
The small dry fruits of Thesium humile usually fall near the parent plant. They may also be transported over short distances by surface water, soil, animals and agricultural activities.
Adaptations to the Mediterranean climate
Osyris alba displays characteristics adapted to summer drought:
- narrow and relatively leathery leaves,
- green photosynthetic stems,
- an extensive root system,
- the ability to obtain water from host plants,
- and the maintenance of photosynthetic activity even when the foliage is reduced.
Thesium humile avoids the unfavourable summer period through its annual life cycle. It germinates after the rains and produces seeds before the soil dries completely.
The hemiparasitic way of life provides additional access to water and nutrients, but the plants remain dependent on the condition of the overall vegetation of their habitat.
Ecological importance
The fruits of Osyris alba provide food for birds and contribute to interactions between plants and animals within Mediterranean scrub.
The dense stems of the shrub provide shelter for invertebrates, reptiles and small birds. Its root system contributes to soil stabilization on rocky slopes.
Both species participate in underground networks of relationships with other plants through their haustoria. They therefore form a distinctive functional element of the plant communities in which they grow.
Uses and economic importance
The best-known economically important member of the family is sandalwood, obtained mainly from Santalum album and related species.
The aromatic heartwood and essential oil of sandalwood are used in perfumery, cosmetics, traditional medicine, woodcarving and religious or cultural ceremonies.
The high commercial value of sandalwood has resulted in the overexploitation of several Santalum species, illegal logging and the decline of natural populations.
Various Osyris and Thesium species have been used locally in traditional medicine or for other purposes. Traditional uses do not constitute proof of safety, and the wild Cypriot plants should not be used without scientific identification and specialist guidance.
Threats and protection
The principal potential threats to the two Cypriot species are:
- the destruction and clearance of scrub,
- residential and tourism development,
- agricultural intensification,
- the use of herbicides,
- the destruction of field margins,
- quarrying and roadworks,
- fires,
- overgrazing,
- the removal of vegetation that serves as hosts,
- the spread of competitive alien plants,
- and prolonged drought caused by climate change.
The protection of hemiparasitic plants requires the conservation of the entire local plant community. Preserving only the visible individuals without the neighbouring host plants may not be sufficient for their long-term survival.
