Acer obtusifolium
Dodonaea viscosa
- τα longan, Dimocarpus longan,
- το guaraná, Paullinia cupana,

The family Sapindaceae, known as the soapberry family, is a large family of flowering plants belonging to the order Sapindales. It includes trees, shrubs, woody climbing plants and, more rarely, herbs.
The family has an almost worldwide distribution, with its greatest diversity in tropical and subtropical regions. It includes approximately 140–144 genera and 1,900 species worldwide. Important recent phylogenetic studies report approximately 144 genera, while the exact numbers change according to taxonomic delimitation.
In the modern broad circumscription of Sapindaceae, the genera formerly placed in the separate families Aceraceae and Hippocastanaceae are included. Therefore, the maples of the genus Acer and the horse chestnuts of the genus Aesculus are now considered members of Sapindaceae.
According to the organized checklist of the flora of Cyprus, the family Sapindaceae is represented in Cyprus by 2 genera and 2 taxa: 1 native non-endemic species and 1 alien or naturalized species. No endemic, hybrid or uncertain-status taxa of the family are recorded.
General characteristics
The members of Sapindaceae display considerable morphological diversity. In tropical regions, they are mainly trees, shrubs and woody climbing lianas, while in temperate regions they include well-known deciduous trees such as maples.
The leaves are usually alternate and compound, pinnate or palmate. In the genus Acer, however, they are opposite and usually simple, with palmate venation. In Dodonaea viscosa, they are alternate, simple and entire.
Stipules are generally absent. The leaf petioles may be swollen at the base, while in several climbing species parts of the leaves are modified into tendrils.
The flowers are usually small and may be bisexual, unisexual or functionally unisexual. The plants may be monoecious or dioecious. The calyx and corolla usually consist of four or five parts, but the petals are absent in certain genera.
A conspicuous nectar-producing disc is often present at the base of the stamens. There are usually eight stamens, although their number may range from four to ten.
The ovary is superior and usually consists of two or three carpels. The fruits display great diversity and may be capsules, drupes, berries, schizocarps, nuts or winged fruits.
The family Sapindaceae in Cyprus
In Cyprus, the family is represented by two morphologically and ecologically very different plants.
Acer obtusifolium is a native tree or large shrub of the natural Cypriot vegetation. Dodonaea viscosa is an alien or naturalized evergreen shrub introduced mainly as an ornamental and drought-resistant plant.
The former is associated mainly with forests, forest margins, stream valleys and rocky slopes, while the latter can establish in dry, open and disturbed places.

The Cypriot species
Acer obtusifolium
Acer obtusifolium is a small to medium-sized tree or large shrub. Depending on local conditions, it may be evergreen, semi-evergreen or lose part of its foliage during the unfavourable period.
The leaves are opposite, leathery and usually possess three blunt lobes or an almost entire outline. The upper surface is green, and the lower surface is often paler.
The flowers are small, yellow-green and formed in groups. The fruits consist of two joined one-seeded sections, each possessing an elongated wing. This double-winged fruit is known as a double samara.
The species occurs in forests, scrub, forest margins, on rocky slopes, in stream valleys and in other relatively protected places. It can grow in stony soils and withstand Mediterranean summer drought.
Dodonaea viscosa
Dodonaea viscosa is an evergreen, much-branched shrub or small tree. The leaves are simple, alternate, narrow or lanceolate and often have a sticky or resinous surface.
The flowers are small, greenish or yellowish and lack conspicuous petals. Male and female flowers may be formed on separate plants.
The fruit is a characteristic dry capsule with two to four broad wings. When mature, it may become pink, reddish or brown.
The species has an extremely broad natural distribution in the tropical and subtropical regions of the world. In Cyprus, it is recorded as alien or naturalized and is associated with ornamental planting, gardens, roads, banks and disturbed places.
Fruits and dispersal
The fruits of both Cypriot species are adapted to wind dispersal.
In Acer obtusifolium, the two wings of the double samara rotate as they fall. The rotating movement slows their descent and allows the wind to carry the fruit away from the parent tree.
In Dodonaea viscosa, the broad wings of the capsule increase its surface area and facilitate transport by wind. The seeds may also be transported by surface water, soil, vehicles and human activities.
Efficient seed production and dispersal help Dodonaea viscosa establish outside its original planting sites.
Pollination
The small flowers of Acer obtusifolium attract insects, mainly bees and flies. In certain cases, wind may also participate in pollen transfer.
The flowering of maples may provide nectar and pollen for insects during the season when the trees are producing new growth.
In Dodonaea viscosa, the small and simplified form of the flowers, exposed anthers and production of lightweight pollen are associated mainly with wind pollination.
Adaptations to the Mediterranean climate
Acer obtusifolium displays several adaptations to Mediterranean conditions:
- leathery leaves,
- a relatively small leaf surface,
- the ability to lose part of its foliage under unfavourable conditions,
- a deep and strong root system,
- tolerance of stony soils,
- and the ability to resprout after pruning or limited disturbance.
Dodonaea viscosa is also highly resistant to drought. It has narrow leaves, resinous secretions and the ability to grow in poor, dry and disturbed soils.
This resistance has contributed to its extensive use as an ornamental plant, but it also increases its ability to establish outside cultivation.
Ecological importance of Acer obtusifolium
Acer obtusifolium forms an important component of woody vegetation in forests, scrub and rocky mountain areas.
Its crown provides shade and creates cooler microhabitats for herbs, mosses, fungi and invertebrates. The branches and cavities of larger trees provide shelter and nesting sites for birds and other animals.
Leaves falling to the ground decompose and enrich the soil with organic matter. The root system contributes to soil stabilization on slopes and to the reduction of erosion.
The flowers provide food for insects, while the fruits and seeds may be used by birds, rodents and other animals.
Economic importance of the family
Sapindaceae includes several economically important plants:
- lychee, Litchi chinensis,
- rambutan, Nephelium lappaceum,
- longan, Dimocarpus longan,
- guaraná, Paullinia cupana,
- the soapberries of the genus Sapindus,
- and the maples of the genus Acer.
Maple syrup is produced mainly from the sap of Acer saccharum and other North American species. Various maples also provide valuable timber and are used as ornamental trees.
The fruits of Sapindus species are rich in saponins, substances with foaming and cleaning properties used in soaps, detergents and cosmetics.
Many species of the family contain powerful bioactive substances. The edible use of certain fruits does not mean that their seeds, unripe fruits or every species of the family are safe.
Alien taxon and potential spread
Dodonaea viscosa is the only taxon of the family recorded as alien or naturalized in Cyprus.
It is used as an ornamental plant because it tolerates drought, high temperatures, pruning, wind and, to some extent, coastal salinity.
These characteristics, together with the effective production of winged fruits, may facilitate its escape from cultivation and establishment in natural or semi-natural places.
Its presence outside gardens should be recorded and monitored, particularly in dry scrub, coastal areas and protected habitats. Recording it as an alien plant does not automatically mean that it is invasive, but it allows its behaviour to be assessed at an early stage.
Threats and protection
The principal potential threats to the native Acer obtusifolium and its habitats are:
- the destruction of forests and scrub,
- fires,
- the cutting or uprooting of mature trees,
- residential and tourism development,
- quarrying and roadworks,
- overgrazing of young plants,
- prolonged drought,
- reduced natural regeneration,
- the spread of competitive alien plants,
- and climate change.
Protecting mature trees, young seedlings and natural regeneration is essential for the long-term conservation of populations.
Following fires or other disturbances, regeneration should be monitored and additional pressures, such as intensive grazing and repeated clearance, should be avoided.
