Saxifraga

The family Saxifragaceae, known as the saxifrage family, is a family of angiosperm plants belonging to the order Saxifragales. It includes approximately 40 genera and more than 600 species, although the total number differs depending on the taxonomic treatment. Its greatest diversity occurs in the temperate, cold, Arctic and mountainous regions of the Northern Hemisphere.
In Cyprus, the family Saxifragaceae is represented by 1 genus and 2 native, non-endemic taxa, which are species of the genus Saxifraga.
General characteristics
The members of the family are mainly annual or perennial herbs. Many species form basal rosettes of leaves, while some grow in rock crevices, shallow soils or moist and shaded locations.
The leaves are usually simple, alternate or concentrated at the base of the plant. They may be entire, toothed, palmate or deeply lobed. In several species their surface bears glandular hairs.
The flowers are usually small and bisexual, with radial symmetry. They generally have 5 sepals, 5 petals and 5 or 10 stamens. The ovary is usually formed by 2 carpels, which are united at the base and end in two separate styles.
The fruit is usually a capsule or consists of follicles and contains numerous small seeds.
The name Saxifraga derives from the Latin words saxum, meaning rock, and frangere, meaning to break. The name is mainly associated with the ability of many species to grow within rock crevices.
Habitats in Cyprus
The Cypriot members of the family are small annual herbs adapted to rocky locations and shallow soils. They occur in rock crevices, rocky slopes, old walls and other locations where there is a limited accumulation of soil.
Saxifraga hederacea is more closely associated with cool, shaded and seasonally moist rocky locations. Saxifraga tridactylites can grow in more open and dry locations, on rocks, walls and shallow stony soils.
Taxa of the family Saxifragaceae in Cyprus
According to the organized checklist of the flora of Cyprus, 2 native, non-endemic taxa, belonging to 1 genus, are recorded in Cyprus.
Native, non-endemic taxa
Saxifraga
- Saxifraga hederacea L. — Species
- Saxifraga tridactylites L. — Species
No endemic, alien, hybrid or uncertain-presence taxa of the family are recorded in Cyprus.
Ecology
The two species complete their biological cycle during the wet period of the year. The seeds germinate when sufficient soil moisture is available, and the plants grow, flower and produce fruit before the intense summer drought.
Saxifraga hederacea is a delicate annual herb with characteristic lobed leaves, which somewhat resemble ivy leaves. It prefers sheltered microsites with increased moisture.
Saxifraga tridactylites is a small annual plant, often reddish and glandular-hairy. Its upper leaves are usually three-lobed, a characteristic from which the scientific name tridactylites derives, referring to “three fingers”.
Reproduction and dispersal
Reproduction takes place by seeds. The small flowers are pollinated mainly by insects, while self-pollination may also occur in some cases.
After maturation, the capsules open and release numerous small seeds. Their dispersal occurs mainly through gravity, wind and raindrops. The seeds can accumulate in nearby rock crevices and small depressions containing soil, where suitable conditions for germination are created.
Adaptations
The annual life form allows the Cypriot species to avoid the unfavourable period of summer drought. The plants survive during the summer in the form of seeds and reappear after the first sufficient rainfall.
Their small size and their ability to grow in very limited amounts of soil reduce competition with larger plants. The hairs and glandular secretions present particularly in Saxifraga tridactylites contribute to the protection of the plant’s delicate tissues.
Ecological and economic importance
The species of the family participate in the vegetation cover of rocky microhabitats, where few other plants can survive. They provide small quantities of nectar and pollen to insects and contribute to the maintenance of the biodiversity of rocky ecosystems.
Many species and varieties of the family Saxifragaceae are cultivated internationally as ornamental plants, particularly in rock gardens. The two native species of Cyprus have no significant direct economic use, but they possess scientific and ecological value.
Threats and protection
Populations may be affected by the destruction or alteration of their rocky microhabitats, quarrying, road construction, building activities, herbicide use and the cleaning or restoration of old stone walls.
Prolonged drought and changes in the seasonality of rainfall can also affect germination and the completion of their short biological cycle. The protection of natural rocky locations and the avoidance of unnecessary disturbance during the growth and flowering period contribute to their conservation.
