Text by George Konstantinou
The
family Scrophulariaceae, known
as the figwort family, is a
family of angiosperm plants belonging to the order Lamiales. According to its modern taxonomic circumscription, it
includes approximately 59 genera and
1,880 species, which have a wide global distribution. A large part of
its diversity is concentrated in the Southern Hemisphere, while the group that
includes the genera Scrophularia and Verbascum is distributed
mainly in the temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere.
In
the past, the family included many more genera. Modern molecular and
phylogenetic studies led to the transfer of many of them to other families,
mainly Plantaginaceae and Orobanchaceae.
In
Cyprus, the family Scrophulariaceae is represented by 3 genera and 8 taxa. Of these, 7 taxa are native and non-endemic, while 1 taxon is alien with a casual presence.
General characteristics
The
members of the family are annual, biennial or perennial herbs and, more rarely,
shrubs or small trees. The stems may be erect, ascending or creeping and are
often covered with simple, branched or glandular hairs.
The
leaves are usually simple and may be alternate, opposite or concentrated in a
basal rosette. Their margins are entire, toothed or lobed. In species of the
genus Verbascum, the leaves are often densely hairy and form a
characteristic basal rosette during the early stages of growth.
The
flowers are bisexual and usually have bilateral symmetry, although in species
of the genus Verbascum they may be almost radially symmetrical. The
corolla consists of 5 fused petals and may be tubular, bell-shaped or rotate.
There are usually 4 or 5 stamens.
The
ovary is superior, usually consists of 2 fused carpels and contains numerous
ovules. The fruit is generally a capsule that opens at maturity and releases
many small seeds.
Habitats in Cyprus
The
species of the family occupy different habitats in Cyprus. They occur on rocky
and stony slopes, in open scrubland, forest clearings, roadsides, abandoned
fields, old walls and other disturbed locations.
Limosella aquatica differs ecologically from the other species
of the family, as it is a small plant of wet or muddy locations. It grows on
seasonally inundated soils, along the margins of bodies of water and on muddy
surfaces that are exposed when the water recedes.
The
species of the genera Scrophularia and Verbascum occur mainly in
terrestrial habitats. Many species of the genus Verbascum prefer open,
sunny locations with stony or well-drained soils.

Ecology
Limosella aquatica is a small, low-growing plant with leaves
developing in a basal rosette. Its biological cycle is closely connected with
seasonal changes in water level. It may appear on muddy surfaces for a limited
period, flower and produce seeds before the habitat dries out completely.
The
species of the genus Scrophularia are usually annual or perennial herbs
with opposite leaves and small, characteristic flowers, often in shades of green,
brown or purple. Their flowers attract various insects.
The
species of the genus Verbascum are usually annual, biennial or perennial
plants. Many form a basal rosette during the first stage of their development
and later produce an erect flowering stem. Their flowers are usually yellow and
are arranged in elongated or branched inflorescences.
Verbascum geminiflorum is not an element of the
native Cypriot flora. In Cyprus, it is classified as a casual alien species,
without a confirmed stable and self-sustaining population.
Reproduction and dispersal
Reproduction
takes place mainly by seeds. The flowers are generally pollinated by insects,
particularly bees, flies and other insects that visit the flowers for pollen or
nectar.
The
mature capsules open and release numerous small seeds. Dispersal occurs mainly
through gravity, wind, surface water flow and the movement of soil. In Limosella
aquatica, water and the movement of mud contribute significantly to seed
dispersal.
Species
of the genus Verbascum can produce large numbers of seeds. Some of the
seeds remain in the soil and form a seed bank, allowing the plants to reappear
when suitable conditions develop.
Adaptations
The
production of numerous small seeds is an important adaptation for the
colonization of open and temporarily available habitats. The ability of the
seeds to remain in the soil allows the plants to survive during unfavourable
periods.
The
dense hairs of many species of the genus Verbascum reduce water loss,
reflect part of the intense solar radiation and protect plant tissues from
grazing by small herbivorous organisms.
Limosella aquatica is adapted to habitats with pronounced
seasonal changes. Its rapid growth and fruit production allow it to complete
its biological cycle during the short period in which muddy surfaces remain
suitable.
Ecological and economic importance
The
flowers of the species of the family provide pollen and nectar for various
insects. The plants participate in the vegetation of open, rocky, disturbed or
seasonally wet habitats and contribute to overall plant diversity.
Some
species of the genus Verbascum have been used in traditional herbal
medicine in various countries, while others are cultivated as ornamental
plants. Uses known for particular species should not automatically be
attributed to all members of the genus, as their chemical composition may
differ.
Limosella aquatica has particular ecological value as a
component of the specialized flora of seasonally flooded and muddy habitats.
Threats and protection
The
drainage of wetlands, alteration of natural water-level fluctuations, cleaning
and dredging operations, pollution and prolonged drought can significantly
affect suitable habitats of Limosella aquatica.
The
remaining species may be affected by the destruction of rocky and open
habitats, road construction, quarrying activities, building development,
excessive herbicide use and uncontrolled plant collection.
The
conservation of natural wetland, rocky and open habitats, together with the
avoidance of disturbance during the growth, flowering and fruiting period, is
important for the protection of their populations.
