The family Solanaceae, known as the nightshade family or potato family, is a family of angiosperm plants belonging to the order Solanales. According to Plants of the World Online, it includes 103 accepted genera and approximately 2,700 species, with a worldwide distribution and particularly great diversity in Central and South America.

The family includes plants of enormous economic importance, such as the potato, tomato, aubergine, peppers and tobacco. It also includes poisonous, medicinal, ornamental and invasive species.

In Cyprus, the family Solanaceae is represented in the organized checklist by 9 genera and 21 taxa. Of these, 7 are native and non-endemic, 11 belong to the category of alien or naturalized plants and 3 have an uncertain status.

General characteristics

The members of the family are annual, biennial or perennial herbs, shrubs, small trees and, more rarely, climbing plants. The stems may be smooth, hairy, glandular or spiny.

The leaves are usually simple, alternate and without stipules. They may be entire, toothed, lobed or deeply divided. In several species, the leaves and stems bear glandular hairs or spines.

The flowers are usually bisexual and radially symmetrical or slightly zygomorphic. The calyx generally consists of 5 fused sepals and the corolla of 5 fused petals. The corolla may be rotate, funnel-shaped, tubular or bell-shaped.

There are usually 5 stamens, alternating with the corolla lobes. The ovary is superior, usually formed by 2 fused carpels and contains numerous ovules.

The fruit is usually a fleshy berry, as in the genera Solanum, Lycium and Withania, or a dry capsule, as in the genera Datura, Hyoscyamus and Nicotiana.

Chemical substances and toxicity

Many members of the family produce powerful bioactive substances, particularly alkaloids. These include nicotine, atropine, scopolamine, hyoscyamine and various glycoalkaloids.

These substances function mainly as chemical defences against herbivorous organisms. Their concentration and chemical composition differ significantly among species and among the different parts of the same plant.

Some species of the genera Datura, Hyoscyamus, Mandragora, Nicotiana, Solanum and Withania may be toxic. The consumption of unknown fruits, leaves, seeds or roots of plants belonging to the family is dangerous and should be avoided.

Habitats in Cyprus

The species of the family occur in a wide variety of habitats. The native taxa grow in rocky and stony locations, scrubland, open areas, coastal habitats, banks, old walls, uncultivated fields and other natural or disturbed areas.

Many alien taxa occur in inhabited areas, along roadsides, in gardens, agricultural land, dumping grounds, riverbeds and abandoned fields. Some originate from cultivated or ornamental plants that escaped from cultivation.

The species Solanum elaeagnifolium and Nicotiana glauca can colonize heavily disturbed habitats and locally form significant populations.

Ecology

The native species show different ecological adaptations. Hyoscyamus albus and Hyoscyamus aureus often occur in rocky or human-influenced locations, such as old walls, ruins and stony banks.

Lycium schweinfurthii is a spiny shrub that can grow in dry and coastal locations. Its dense stems provide shelter for small animals.

Mandragora officinarum is a perennial herb with a large, fleshy underground organ and a basal rosette of leaves. It grows mainly during the cool and wet period of the year.

Solanum nigrum and Solanum villosum are herbaceous plants of open and disturbed locations. Their fleshy fruits are consumed by birds, which contribute to seed dispersal.

Withania somnifera is a perennial herb or small shrub adapted to dry, warm and often disturbed locations.

Reproduction and dispersal

Reproduction takes place mainly by seeds. The flowers are pollinated by insects, particularly bees, flies and moths. Some species can also self-pollinate.

Species with fleshy fruits are dispersed mainly through birds and other animals that consume the fruits. The seeds are transported away from the parent plant and deposited in new locations.

The dry capsules of the genera Datura, Hyoscyamus and Nicotiana release numerous seeds. Dispersal occurs through gravity, wind, water, vehicles, agricultural machinery and the movement of contaminated soil.

Some alien species can also reproduce vegetatively. Solanum elaeagnifolium, for example, has an extensive underground system and can regenerate from root fragments.

Adaptations

The production of alkaloids and other secondary chemical substances protects many species from grazing and attack by herbivorous organisms.

The hairs, glandular secretions and spines of certain species provide additional mechanical and chemical protection. Deep or extensive root systems allow survival in dry environments and regeneration after cutting or disturbance.

The production of large numbers of seeds, the formation of a soil seed bank and the ability to grow in disturbed soils particularly favour the spread of alien species.

Economic importance

Solanaceae is one of the most economically important plant families. It includes major cultivated species such as:

  • the potato, Solanum tuberosum,
  • the tomato, Solanum lycopersicum,
  • the aubergine, Solanum melongena,
  • peppers, species of the genus Capsicum,
  • and tobacco, mainly Nicotiana tabacum.

Many species are also cultivated as ornamental plants, including species of the genera Cestrum, Brugmansia, Datura, Nicotiana and Petunia.

Various alkaloids of the family have been used in pharmacology. At the same time, these substances can cause serious poisoning when the plants are used without specialized knowledge.

Alien and potentially invasive species

Some alien members of the family have particular environmental or agricultural importance in Cyprus.

Solanum elaeagnifolium is a spiny perennial plant with a strong underground system. It can spread in agricultural and disturbed areas, compete with crops and be difficult to remove.

Nicotiana glauca is a shrub or small tree that colonizes banks, riverbeds, roadsides and abandoned land. It produces numerous small seeds and contains toxic alkaloids.

Lycium ferocissimum is a dense, strongly spiny shrub. Its spread can restrict access by people and animals and compete with native vegetation.

Species of the genus Datura produce numerous seeds and frequently appear in disturbed or nutrient-rich soils. All their parts may contain dangerous tropane alkaloids.

Threats and protection

The native species may be affected by the destruction of their natural habitats, building development, scrub clearance, the cleaning of old walls and herbicide use.

At the same time, the spread of certain alien species may affect natural vegetation, agricultural land and disturbed ecosystems. The early identification and removal of new outbreaks is more effective than dealing with extensive and established populations.

For taxa of uncertain status, further examination of historical evidence, specimens and modern records is required to determine whether stable populations exist or existed in Cyprus.
