Σύμφωνα με το Plants of the World Online, η οικογένεια περιλαμβάνει σήμερα 1 αποδεκτό γένος, το Smilax, με περίπου 268 αποδεκτά είδη.

Smilax

The family Smilacaceae, known as the greenbrier family or sarsaparilla family, is a family of monocotyledonous angiosperm plants belonging to the order Liliales.

According to Plants of the World Online, the family currently includes 1 accepted genus, Smilax, with approximately 268 accepted species. Its species are distributed in the tropical, subtropical and temperate regions of both hemispheres, with the greatest diversity in South America and tropical Asia.

In Cyprus, the family Smilacaceae is represented by 1 genus and 1 native, non-endemic taxon, Smilax aspera.

General characteristics

The members of the family are mainly perennial climbing or creeping plants, often with woody stems and underground rhizomes. The stems may be smooth or bear strong, hook-shaped prickles, which help the plants support themselves on the surrounding vegetation.

The leaves are simple, alternate, petiolate and usually leathery. They may be ovate, heart-shaped or triangular and often have a prickly margin. They display characteristic reticulate venation, a feature unusual among monocotyledonous plants.

Two tendrils usually develop at the base of the petiole. The tendrils coil around branches and other supports and allow the stems to climb towards the light.

The plants are usually dioecious, with male and female flowers formed on different individuals. The flowers are small, greenish, yellowish or whitish and are grouped in spherical, umbel-like inflorescences.

Each flower usually has 6 similar tepals. The male flowers generally bear 6 stamens, while the female flowers possess a superior ovary with 3 chambers.

The fruit is a spherical, fleshy berry containing a few relatively large seeds.

Habitats in Cyprus

Smilax aspera occurs in many natural and semi-natural habitats in Cyprus. It grows in scrubland, maquis vegetation, forests, forest margins, hedgerows, rocky slopes, stream valleys and other locations with shrubby or woody vegetation.

It can climb over shrubs and trees, forming dense and often impenetrable networks of stems. It occurs both in relatively dry Mediterranean locations and in cooler and moister microhabitats.

The presence of tendrils and prickles helps it use the surrounding vegetation as a natural support without investing in the development of a strong vertical trunk.

Taxa of the family Smilacaceae in Cyprus

According to the organized checklist of the flora of Cyprus, 1 native, non-endemic taxon, belonging to 1 genus, is recorded in Cyprus.

Native, non-endemic taxon

Smilax

  1. Smilax aspera L. — Species

No endemic, alien, hybrid or uncertain-presence taxa of the family are recorded in Cyprus.

The species Smilax aspera in Cyprus

Smilax aspera is an evergreen or partly deciduous, perennial climbing plant. It has long, flexible and strongly branched stems, which often bear strong, curved prickles.

The leaves show considerable morphological variation. They are usually tough and glossy, with a heart-shaped, ovate or triangular base and prominent main veins beginning near the base of the blade. The margin may be entire or bear small prickles.

The tendrils that develop near the base of the petiole attach themselves to neighbouring plants and provide support for the growing stems.

The small flowers are formed in spherical inflorescences in the leaf axils. Because the species is usually dioecious, the presence of male and female plants in the same wider area is required for successful fruit production.

The fruits are spherical berries that acquire a red to dark-red colour at maturity. They often remain on the plant for a considerable period.

Ecology

Smilax aspera is a characteristic climbing component of Mediterranean vegetation. Its stems often connect neighbouring shrubs and trees and contribute to the creation of dense plant cover.

Its dense stands provide shelter for small birds, reptiles, invertebrates and other organisms. The flowers provide a food source for various insects, while the fleshy fruits are consumed by birds.

The plant can grow under partial shade, but its stems are directed towards brighter parts of the vegetation. Its extensive underground system and resistant stems allow it to survive under conditions of summer drought.

Reproduction and dispersal

Reproduction takes place mainly by seeds, but the plant can also spread locally through its underground system and the rooting of stems that come into contact with the ground.

Pollination is carried out by insects attracted to the small, numerous inflorescences. Because the male and female flowers are usually found on different plants, the transfer of pollen between different individuals is necessary.

The mature fruits are consumed by birds, which transport the seeds to new locations. Zoochory is the most important means of dispersal over longer distances, while the fruits may also fall close to the parent plant.

Adaptations

The tendrils allow the plant to climb efficiently over the surrounding vegetation and reach brighter levels without constructing a strong self-supporting trunk.

The prickles function both as means of support and as protection from large herbivorous animals. The tough, leathery leaves reduce water loss and constitute an important adaptation to the warm and dry Mediterranean summer.

The underground system allows the storage of nutrients and the regeneration of stems after drought, grazing, cutting or other disturbances. Its ability to resprout makes the plant particularly resilient.

Ecological and economic importance

Smilax aspera has significant ecological value, as it provides food, cover and protected locations for many animals. Its dense, prickly stems create safe nesting and resting sites for small birds.

Various species of the genus Smilax have been used in different parts of the world in traditional herbal medicine and as a source of the herbal drug known as sarsaparilla. Other species are used as food, in basketry or as ornamental plants.

Uses reported for other species of the genus should not automatically be attributed to Smilax aspera. The consumption or medicinal use of any part of the plant requires correct identification and appropriate scientific guidance.

Threats and protection

The species is widely adapted to different Mediterranean habitats, but its local populations may be affected by the clearing of scrubland, the destruction of hedgerows, highly frequent forest fires, building development and operations to clear natural vegetation.

The excessive removal of climbing plants from forest margins, stream valleys and hedgerows reduces the dense plant cover used by many animals as shelter.

The conservation of maquis vegetation, natural hedgerows, forest margins and stream valleys contributes both to the protection of the species and to the conservation of the organisms that depend on its stands.
