Σύμφωνα με το Plants of the World Online, η οικογένεια περιλαμβάνει 2 αποδεκτά γένη, τα Sparganium και Typha, και περίπου 60 είδη.

  1. Typha domingensis Pers.

Το Sparganium erectum subsp. neglectum

Το Typha domingensis

The family Typhaceae, known as the cattail family, is a family of monocotyledonous angiosperm plants belonging to the order Poales. It includes perennial aquatic or helophytic plants that grow in wetlands, shallow water and saturated soils.

According to Plants of the World Online, the family includes 2 accepted genera, Sparganium and Typha, and approximately 60 species. Its members have an almost worldwide distribution, from temperate to tropical regions.

In Cyprus, the family Typhaceae is represented by 2 genera and 2 native, non-endemic taxa: Sparganium erectum subsp. neglectum and Typha domingensis.

General characteristics

The members of the family are perennial herbaceous plants with strong, creeping underground rhizomes. The rhizomes spread through mud or wet soil and produce new shoots, allowing the formation of dense colonies.

The stems are erect and usually unbranched. The leaves are long, linear, flat or slightly triangular in cross-section and surround the base of the stem.

The internal tissues of the leaves, stems and rhizomes contain large air spaces. This tissue is known as aerenchyma and allows oxygen to be transported from the above-ground parts to the roots growing in anaerobic, muddy soils.

The flowers are very small, unisexual and without conspicuous petals. The male and female flowers are formed on the same plant but in different parts of the inflorescence.

In the genus Typha, the flowers are grouped in a dense, cylindrical inflorescence. The male section is located above the female section and usually disintegrates after releasing the pollen.

In the genus Sparganium, the flowers form separate spherical heads along the flowering stem. The male heads are usually located above the female heads.

Habitats in Cyprus

The two Cypriot taxa are exclusively associated with wetland habitats. They grow in shallow water, marshes, rivers, streams, canals, ditches, springs, artificial ponds, reservoirs and other locations with permanent or prolonged moisture.

Typha domingensis can form extensive and dense stands in shallow fresh or slightly brackish water. It tolerates significant fluctuations in water level and can rapidly colonize muddy surfaces.

Sparganium erectum subsp. neglectum usually prefers fresh, shallow or slow-moving water and muddy banks. It is a helophyte with roots and rhizomes submerged in saturated soil and above-ground stems growing above the water surface.

Taxa of the family Typhaceae in Cyprus

According to the organized checklist of the flora of Cyprus, 2 native, non-endemic taxa, belonging to 2 genera, are recorded in Cyprus.

Native, non-endemic taxa

Sparganium

  1. Sparganium erectum subsp. neglectum (Beeby) K.Richt. — Subspecies

Typha

  1. Typha domingensis Pers. — Species

No endemic, alien, hybrid or uncertain-presence taxa of the family are recorded in Cyprus.

Sparganium erectum subsp. neglectum

Sparganium erectum subsp. neglectum is a robust, perennial helophytic plant with erect stems and long, linear leaves. It grows from underground rhizomes that spread through the mud.

The inflorescence is branched and bears separate spherical heads. The smaller male heads are located towards the top, while the larger female heads are situated lower down.

Following fertilization, the female heads develop into characteristic spherical clusters of fruits. Each individual fruit usually contains one seed.

The taxon has a native distribution from Europe and North Africa to Iran and grows as a helophyte or rhizomatous geophyte.

Typha domingensis

Typha domingensis is a tall, robust and perennial helophyte. It has long, narrow leaves and strong underground rhizomes, through which it often forms dense, almost monospecific stands.

The inflorescence is erect and consists of two cylindrical sections. The lower, denser section includes the female flowers, while the upper section includes the male flowers.

After pollination, the female section acquires a characteristic brown appearance. At maturity, it releases numerous very small fruits, each of which is associated with fine hairs.

The species has a wide native distribution in tropical and subtropical regions and is native to Cyprus.

Ecology

Dense stands of Typhaceae form an important part of wetland vegetation. They provide nesting, resting and protective sites for aquatic and wetland birds.

The stems, leaves and rhizomes create complex microhabitats for insects, spiders, molluscs, amphibians, fish and other aquatic organisms.

The submerged parts reduce water velocity and retain suspended particles. In this way, they contribute to the stabilization of mud and banks.

The plants absorb nutrients from water and sediments. This function can contribute to improving water quality, but an excessive concentration of nutrients can cause excessive growth of the stands.

Pollination

Pollination takes place mainly by wind. The male flowers produce large quantities of lightweight pollen, which is transported to the female flowers.

The separation of the male and female sections of the inflorescence limits self-pollination to some extent. The different timing of maturation of the two flower types may also favour cross-pollination.

The flowers do not need to possess strong colours, fragrance or nectar because they do not depend on insects for pollen transfer.

Reproduction and dispersal

Reproduction takes place both by seeds and vegetatively through the rhizomes.

In Typha domingensis, the very small fruits have fine hairs and are easily transported by wind. They can also float and be dispersed by water.

The fruits of Sparganium erectum subsp. neglectum are larger and heavier. They are dispersed mainly by water, gravity and possibly through aquatic animals.

The rhizomes allow rapid local spread. Even small rhizome fragments may produce new shoots when transported to a suitable wet substrate.

Adaptations to wetland habitats

Aerenchyma is a fundamental adaptation for survival in soils with very low oxygen concentrations. It transports air from the leaves and stems to the underground organs.

The strong rhizomes store nutrients, allow survival during unfavourable periods and produce new shoots when conditions improve.

The long and flexible leaves withstand water and wind movement. The production of numerous seeds allows the colonization of new wet locations.

The ability to spread vegetatively allows the plants to recover after floods, cutting or temporary drying, provided that the rhizomes remain alive.

Ecological and economic importance

The family is highly important for the functioning of wetland ecosystems. The stands retain sediments, reduce erosion, absorb nutrients and create habitats for many animal species.

Species of the genus Typha are used in constructed wetlands for water and wastewater treatment because they can absorb nutrients and support microorganisms around their roots.

The leaves and stems were historically used to make woven objects, baskets, mats, ropes and roofs. The fluff of mature inflorescences was used as insulation or filling material.

Various parts of Typha species were traditionally used as food in certain regions of the world. Such uses require reliable identification and collection only from clean, unpolluted waters.

Management of dense stands

Plants of the Typhaceae are a natural and valuable part of wetlands. However, when there is an excessive supply of nutrients or a major alteration of the hydrological regime, Typha domingensis can spread intensively.

Very dense stands can reduce open-water surfaces, restrict other aquatic plants and affect the flow in artificial channels.

Management must be based on the ecological needs of each wetland. Complete eradication is usually inappropriate because it destroys habitats and may cause erosion and disturbance of sediments.

Threats and protection

The most important threats are wetland drainage, water extraction, alteration of natural flow, the cleaning and dredging of canals, pollution and waste dumping.

Prolonged drought and reduced rainfall can limit wet locations suitable for the survival and reproduction of the plants.

Uncontrolled cutting or removal of stands during the nesting period can significantly affect birds and other organisms that depend on them.

The protection of natural and artificial wetlands, the maintenance of suitable water levels and the prevention of pollution are essential for the conservation of the family in Cyprus.
