Text by George Konstantinou
The family Xanthorrhoeaceae is a group of monocotyledonous flowering plants belonging to the order Asparagales. Under the broad circumscription used by the APG III system, it included plants that had previously been placed in the families Asphodelaceae, Hemerocallidaceae and Xanthorrhoeaceae in the strict sense.
In the modern APG IV system, the same broadly circumscribed family is named Asphodelaceae, a name that was formally conserved over Xanthorrhoeaceae. The modern Asphodelaceae includes approximately 40 genera and 900 species, divided among the subfamilies Asphodeloideae, Hemerocallidoideae and Xanthorrhoeoideae.
The Cypriot genera Aloe, Asphodeline and Asphodelus belong to the subfamily Asphodeloideae. This article faithfully follows the name Xanthorrhoeaceae, as it appears in the organized checklist of the Cyprus flora, while also referring to its modern taxonomic name.
According to the organized checklist, the family Xanthorrhoeaceae is represented in Cyprus by 3 genera and 6 taxa. Of these, 5 are native non-endemic and 1 is alien or naturalized. No endemic, hybrid or uncertain-status taxa of the family are recorded.
General characteristics
The members of the group are mainly perennial herbs, geophytes, succulents, shrubs or tree-like plants. The Cypriot native taxa are mainly geophytes or perennial herbs, while the alien Aloe vera is a succulent perennial.
The leaves are simple, elongated, linear or lanceolate and usually form a basal rosette. In the genera Asphodeline and Asphodelus, they are narrow and elongated. In Aloe vera, they are thick, succulent and adapted for water storage.
The inflorescences develop on erect flowering stems and may consist of simple or branched racemes and panicles. The flowers are usually bisexual, actinomorphic and three-parted.
The perianth consists of six similar or nearly similar tepals arranged in two whorls. There are six stamens, and the ovary is superior, three-chambered and contains numerous ovules. The fruit is generally a three-chambered capsule containing several seeds.
Habitats in Cyprus
The native species occur in phrygana, grasslands, open shrublands, rocky slopes, calcareous and igneous soils, forest clearings, roadsides, cultivated or abandoned land and montane habitats.
Asphodelus fistulosus and Asphodelus ramosus may occur in open and disturbed sites, while Asphodelus tenuifolius is a smaller annual plant of dry or cultivated soils.
Asphodeline brevicaulis and Asphodeline lutea are more closely associated with natural rocky, grassy and shrubby habitats. Asphodeline lutea has a very restricted occurrence in Cyprus and requires particular protection.
The alien Aloe vera is cultivated in gardens, courtyards, plantations and other human-made environments. It can survive for many years without care and become locally established in abandoned cultivation, on the margins of settlements and in dry rocky sites.

The genus Asphodeline
The genus Asphodeline includes annual or perennial herbs with narrow leaves and erect inflorescences. Unlike the genus Asphodelus, the leaves of Asphodeline may develop both at the base and along the flowering stem.
The flowers are usually yellow or white and open gradually along the inflorescence. The tepals frequently bear a conspicuous central vein.
Asphodeline brevicaulis is a geophyte and a native non-endemic species. In Cyprus, it has been assessed as Near Threatened (NT). It grows in open rocky or grassy sites and flowers in spring.
Asphodeline lutea is a perennial species with characteristic yellow flowers arranged in dense or relatively elongated inflorescences. In Cyprus, it has been assessed as Vulnerable (VU). Its restricted distribution and the small number of known populations make it sensitive to habitat alteration.
The genus Asphodelus
The genus Asphodelus includes annual or perennial herbs with basal, usually linear leaves. The flowering stems are leafless or nearly leafless and bear simple or branched inflorescences.
The flowers have six white or pale-coloured tepals, which usually bear a conspicuous pink, brown or greenish central vein. The fruits are almost spherical or ovoid capsules.
Asphodelus fistulosus is usually an annual or short-lived perennial with hollow, almost cylindrical leaves. It occurs in dry, open and frequently disturbed sites.
Asphodelus ramosus is a robust perennial with fleshy or tuberous roots and a tall, strongly branched inflorescence. It is one of the most characteristic plants of Mediterranean phrygana and open areas.
Asphodelus tenuifolius is a smaller, usually annual species with very narrow leaves. It grows in dry open soils, cultivation, fields and other disturbed sites.
The genus Aloe and Aloe vera
The genus Aloe includes hundreds of species of succulent plants, naturally distributed mainly in Africa, Madagascar and the Arabian Peninsula. The species generally form rosettes of thick leaves that store water.
Aloe vera is a perennial succulent with a short stem or without a conspicuous stem. Its succulent, lanceolate leaves form a basal rosette and possess small teeth along their margins. The flowers are tubular, usually yellow, and borne in erect inflorescences.
The precise original geographical origin of Aloe vera is not fully established because the plant has been cultivated and transported by humans for many centuries. It is not considered native to Cyprus and is recorded as alien or naturalized.
It can reproduce vegetatively through offsets, forming dense clumps around the original plant. Its tolerance of drought enables it to survive for long periods in abandoned gardens and other human-made sites.
Ecology
The flowers of Asphodeline and Asphodelus provide nectar and pollen to bees, beetles, flies and other insects. The gradual opening of flowers along the inflorescence extends the period during which the plant provides food to pollinators.
The tall inflorescences are conspicuous within open vegetation and attract insects from relatively long distances. The flowers of Asphodelus often open successively, and each flower may remain functional for only a limited period.
The fruits and seeds provide food for various invertebrates and other animals. After drying, the flowering stems remain upright for a considerable period and contribute to the gradual dispersal of the seeds.
Reproduction and dispersal
The native species reproduce mainly through seeds. Pollination is generally carried out by insects that visit the flowers for nectar and pollen.
The mature capsules open and release the seeds. Dispersal occurs mainly through gravity, wind over short distances, water runoff, animals and the movement of soil.
Perennial species can also regenerate from their underground organs following summer drought, grazing or the loss of their above-ground parts.
Aloe vera reproduces particularly effectively through offsets. The transport and disposal of plant fragments or garden waste can contribute to its establishment in new locations.
Adaptations to the Mediterranean environment
The Cypriot members of the group possess important adaptations to drought and seasonal changes:
- Fleshy or tuberous roots that store water and nutrients.
- Underground organs that enable survival during the summer drought.
- Reduction or drying of the above-ground parts during the unfavourable period.
- Narrow leaves that reduce the surface area through which water is lost.
- Growth and flowering during the wet period of the year.
- Production of resistant seeds.
- The ability to regenerate following disturbance.
- Succulent leaves and water storage in Aloe vera.
- Thick epidermal tissue and a waxy leaf surface in Aloe vera.
- CAM physiology in Aloe vera, which reduces water loss by opening the stomata mainly at night.
Economic and ecological importance
Aloe vera is cultivated worldwide for the transparent, gel-like substance found inside its leaves. This material is used in cosmetics, skincare products and various commercial preparations.
The transparent inner gel should not be confused with the yellowish sap located immediately beneath the leaf epidermis. This sap contains anthraquinone compounds with a strong laxative action and may cause undesirable or toxic effects. The internal use of aloe products requires particular caution and appropriate medical guidance.
Certain species of Asphodeline and Asphodelus have traditionally been used as food, medicinal plants or sources of materials. Traditional uses vary among regions and should not be applied without reliable identification and scientific knowledge.
Ecologically, the native species form a characteristic part of the spring vegetation and provide food to pollinators. Their underground organs also contribute to the survival of vegetation in dry and frequently disturbed Mediterranean ecosystems.
Threats and protection
The main potential threats include:
- Building and tourism development.
- Road construction or widening.
- Quarrying and mining activities.
- Changes in land use.
- The intensification or abandonment of traditional agricultural practices.
- The use of herbicides.
- Excessive grazing and trampling.
- The uprooting of plants and collection of flowers.
- Fires of high frequency or intensity.
- Climate change and prolonged drought.
- The small extent and isolation of certain populations.
Asphodeline brevicaulis and Asphodeline lutea require particular attention. The former has been assessed as Near Threatened and the latter as Vulnerable in Cyprus.
The protection of known locations, avoidance of destructive interventions during the growth and fruiting period, population monitoring and preservation of seeds in genetic-material banks are important conservation measures.
The spread of the alien Aloe vera should also be monitored near natural and semi-natural habitats. The disposal of offsets and other living plant parts in the wild should be avoided.
