Text by George Konstantinou
The family Violaceae, known as the violet family, is a family of flowering plants belonging to the order Malpighiales. It includes approximately 24 genera and 1,000–1,100 species, with an almost worldwide distribution. The greatest generic diversity occurs in tropical and subtropical regions, where many members of the family are shrubs, small trees or climbing plants. In temperate regions, the genus Viola, which includes approximately 600 species, predominates.
According to the organized checklist of the Cyprus flora, the family Violaceae is represented in Cyprus by 1 genus and 7 taxa. All are recorded as native non-endemic. No endemic, alien, hybrid or uncertain-status taxa of the family are recorded in the checklist.
Viola rauliniana is of particular biogeographical interest because it is considered a near-endemic taxon, with a natural presence in Cyprus and Crete. As it is not restricted exclusively to Cyprus, it is classified in the checklist among the native non-endemic taxa.
General characteristics
The members of Violaceae display a great diversity of growth forms. They include annual and perennial herbs, shrubs, small trees and climbing plants. All the Cypriot taxa belong to the herbaceous genus Viola.
The leaves are simple, usually alternate, and may form a basal rosette or develop along the stem. They generally possess conspicuous stipules, which constitute an important diagnostic character for distinguishing the species. The shape of the blade varies from heart-shaped or ovate to elongated, while the margins are usually entire, toothed or serrated.
The flowers are bisexual, usually solitary and zygomorphic. The calyx consists of five persistent sepals and the corolla of five unequal petals. The lower petal is larger and forms a characteristic backward-pointing spur, within which nectar accumulates.
There are five stamens, whose anthers form a close ring around the pistil. The two lower stamens may possess nectar-producing appendages that extend into the corolla spur.
The ovary is superior, single-chambered and formed from three united carpels with parietal placentation. The fruit is a capsule, which opens into three valves at maturity and contains numerous seeds.
Habitats in Cyprus
The species of the family in Cyprus occur mainly in cool, moist or seasonally moist locations. They grow in forests, shrublands, shaded slopes, forest-road margins, clearings, grasslands, rocky sites, rock crevices and montane or submontane habitats.
Certain species, such as Viola kitaibeliana and Viola parvula, are small annual herbs that rapidly complete their biological cycle during spring. Others, such as Viola alba subsp. alba, Viola odorata and Viola sieheana, are perennial and survive through underground or creeping stems.
Altitude, soil moisture, shade, geology and the duration of snow cover in the higher regions significantly influence the distribution of the species. Several of the Cypriot taxa are associated mainly with the mountainous regions of Troodos.

The genus Viola in Cyprus
The genus Viola includes violets and pansies and is the largest genus of the family Violaceae. Its species display great variation in the form of their leaves, stipules, style, spur and petals.
The flowers may be white, cream, yellow, lilac, blue, violet or a combination of different shades. Colour alone is not always a reliable diagnostic character because it may vary within the same species.
Correct identification requires the combined examination of characteristics such as:
- The form and indumentum of the leaves.
- The shape and dentation of the stipules.
- The presence or absence of conspicuous stems.
- The length, colour and shape of the spur.
- The form of the style and stigma.
- The form of the sepals and their appendages.
- The size, colour and arrangement of the petals.
- The form of the mature capsule and seeds.
The annual species
Viola heldreichiana, Viola kitaibeliana and Viola parvula are small annual plants, often known as annual pansies. They germinate after the rains, grow during the cool season and flower mainly in spring.
Viola heldreichiana is a native non-endemic species known in Cyprus mainly from montane sites. It develops small flowers with lilac or blue shades and completes its cycle before the intense summer drought.
Viola kitaibeliana is also a small annual species with relatively pale-coloured flowers. It occurs in open grassy, rocky or cultivated sites, often at higher elevations.
Viola parvula is a tiny annual montane plant with a restricted occurrence in Cyprus. It has been assessed in the Red Data Book of the Flora of Cyprus as Critically Endangered (CR). Its restricted distribution and the small number of plants make the species particularly vulnerable to alterations of its habitat.
The perennial species
Viola alba subsp. alba is a perennial violet with white or very pale flowers. It grows mainly in cool, shaded or relatively moist locations.
Viola odorata, known internationally as sweet violet, is a perennial violet with characteristically fragrant flowers. It forms basal leaves and may spread through above-ground or creeping stems. The morphology and colour of its flowers may display natural variation.
Viola sieheana is a perennial species of cool and montane habitats. In Cyprus, it is recorded from elevations of approximately 750 to 1,950 metres and flowers mainly from March to May.
Viola rauliniana is a species with blue or lilac flowers and an important presence in the montane flora of Cyprus. It is considered near-endemic because its natural distribution is restricted to Cyprus and Crete. This limited geographical distribution gives the species increased importance for the conservation of Mediterranean biodiversity.
Ecology
The flowers of Viola species provide nectar and pollen to bees, small butterflies, flies and other insects. The spur of the lower petal and the nectar-producing appendages of the stamens form a specialized system for attracting and guiding pollinators.
Lines or darker markings on the petals often function as nectar guides. They direct insects towards the interior of the flower, increasing the likelihood of their contact with the anthers and stigma.
Perennial species contribute to the understorey vegetation of forests and shaded montane habitats. The small annual species form part of the seasonal spring flora of open grasslands and rocky areas.
Pollination and cleistogamy
Many species of the genus Viola can produce two different types of flowers. Chasmogamous flowers are the normal, conspicuous and open flowers that are pollinated mainly by insects.
Cleistogamous flowers remain small and closed and self-pollinate without opening. Cleistogamy enables the plant to produce seeds even when pollinators are scarce or weather conditions do not favour normal flowering.
The combination of cross-pollination through open flowers and self-pollination through cleistogamous flowers provides both genetic diversity and reproductive assurance.
Fruits and dispersal
The fruit is a three-valved capsule, which opens into three valves when mature. As the valves dry and contract, they can compress the seeds and eject them a short distance from the parent plant.
The seeds of many species possess an elaiosome, a small fleshy structure rich in lipids. Ants are attracted to the elaiosome, carry the seeds to their nests, consume the fleshy portion and leave the seed intact in a location suitable for germination. This method of dispersal is known as myrmecochory.
The ejection of the seeds and their transport by ants allow the plants to move their offspring away from the parent individual and colonize new microsites.
Adaptations to the Mediterranean environment
The most important adaptations of the Cypriot species include:
- The short winter and spring cycle of the annual species.
- Survival during the summer drought as resistant seeds.
- The presence of perennial underground organs in the perennial species.
- The capacity of certain species for vegetative spread.
- The production of cleistogamous flowers when conditions do not favour pollination.
- The explosive opening of mature fruits.
- Seed dispersal by ants.
- Growth in cool and shaded microsites that reduce water loss.
- The completion of flowering before the intense summer drought.
Economic and ecological importance
Many species and hybrids of the genus Viola are cultivated worldwide as ornamentals. Pansies and violets are particularly popular for their colourful and often fragrant flowers.
Viola odorata has traditionally been used in perfumery, confectionery and herbal medicine. However, the use of any wild plant as food or medicine requires completely reliable identification and appropriate scientific guidance.
The collection of rare or locally restricted plants from the wild should be avoided. These species are more valuable when preserved in their natural populations, where they participate in ecological relationships with pollinators, ants and other organisms.
Threats and protection
The main potential threats to the Cypriot species include:
- The destruction or alteration of montane and forest habitats.
- The construction and widening of roads and paths.
- The removal of natural vegetation from forest clearings and margins.
- Excessive grazing and trampling.
- High-intensity forest fires.
- Tourism and building development.
- Changes in moisture and the duration of snow cover.
- Climate change, particularly for species of higher elevations.
- The illegal or excessive collection of flowering plants.
- The loss of small and isolated populations.
Viola parvula, which has been assessed as Critically Endangered in Cyprus, requires particular protection. Necessary measures include the protection of known locations, the avoidance of interventions during the growth and fruiting period, regular population monitoring and the preservation of seeds in organized genetic-material banks.
Monitoring is also important for the near-endemic Viola rauliniana because of its restricted global distribution.
