Phyla
Verbena
Lantana

The family Verbenaceae, known as the verbena family or vervain family, is a family of flowering plants belonging to the order Lamiales. It includes approximately 30–35 genera and more than 800 species, with its greatest diversity in the tropical and subtropical regions of the Americas. Certain species also extend into temperate regions, while many are cultivated worldwide as ornamentals.
The family formerly had a much broader taxonomic circumscription and included several genera which, based on modern morphological and molecular studies, have been transferred to the family Lamiaceae. The present-day Verbenaceae represents a smaller and phylogenetically more clearly defined group.
According to the organized checklist of the Cyprus flora, the family Verbenaceae is represented in Cyprus by 3 genera and 5 taxa. Of these, 3 are native non-endemic and 2 are alien or naturalized. No endemic taxa of the family are recorded in Cyprus.
General characteristics
The members of Verbenaceae are annual or perennial herbs, shrubs, small trees and, more rarely, climbing plants. Young stems are often square in cross-section, although they may become cylindrical as they mature.
The leaves are usually opposite or arranged in whorls, more rarely alternate, and lack stipules. They may be simple or deeply divided, with entire, toothed or serrated margins. In several species, the leaves and stems bear glandular hairs and produce characteristic aromatic substances.
The flowers are arranged in spikes, heads, racemes or compound branched inflorescences. They are usually bisexual and zygomorphic. The calyx is fused and the corolla is tubular, often two-lipped, with four or five lobes. There are usually four stamens, often didynamous, with two longer and two shorter.
The ovary is superior and usually consists of two carpels, which may be internally divided by false septa. The fruit may be dry and separate into smaller one-seeded segments or may be fleshy, as in the genus Lantana.
Habitats in Cyprus
The native members of the family occur mainly in wet or seasonally wet sites, riverbeds and streambeds, banks, irrigation channels, reservoir margins, wet grasslands, cultivated ground and other open or disturbed locations.
Phyla nodiflora is a low, creeping perennial that can root at the nodes of its stems. It thrives in moist soils, on banks and in sites that are flooded or retain increased soil moisture for part of the year.
Verbena officinalis occurs in wet or relatively cool sites, along roadsides and paths, in streambeds, cultivated areas and disturbed soils. Verbena supina is an annual associated frequently with seasonally wet, muddy or temporarily flooded sites.
The two alien taxa were introduced mainly as ornamentals or ground-cover plants and have become established outside their places of cultivation.

The genera of the family in Cyprus
Phyla
The genus Phyla includes low, usually creeping herbs or semi-woody plants. Their stems spread over the ground and frequently root at the nodes, forming dense stands. The small flowers are arranged in compact, head-like or cylindrical inflorescences borne on long stalks.
Two species of the genus are recorded in Cyprus. Phyla nodiflora is native non-endemic, while Phyla canescens is alien and naturalized. The two species may be morphologically similar, and their reliable separation requires an examination of the leaves, indumentum, inflorescences and other diagnostic characters.
Verbena
The genus Verbena includes mainly herbs and semi-shrubs with opposite leaves and small flowers arranged in elongated spikes or other branched inflorescences. It is represented in Cyprus by the native non-endemic Verbena officinalis and Verbena supina.
Verbena officinalis is usually an erect, branched plant with slender flowering spikes and small lilac or pinkish flowers. Verbena supina is generally a lower, more spreading annual plant adapted to seasonally wet soils.
Lantana
The genus Lantana consists mainly of shrubs originating from tropical and subtropical America. It is characterized by opposite, often rough and aromatic leaves, dense head-like inflorescences and fleshy fruits.
The alien Lantana camara, a very well-known ornamental shrub, is recorded in Cyprus. Its flowers may be yellow, orange, pink, red or a combination of different colours, which often change as the flowers mature.
The alien taxa
Lantana camara originates from tropical America and has been transported to many regions of the world as an ornamental. In Cyprus, it is recorded as a naturalized non-invasive taxon. It may escape from gardens and occur on the margins of settlements, in abandoned sites, on slopes, along roadsides and in streambeds.
In many tropical and subtropical countries, the species has developed into a serious invasive plant. Its spread in Cyprus requires monitoring, without automatically transferring to the island the impacts recorded in different climates and ecosystems.
Phyla canescens is an alien, naturalized and invasive taxon in Cyprus. It is a low creeping plant that forms dense mats, roots at its nodes and can spread through both seeds and stem fragments. Its growth in moist soils and grassy surfaces may result in competition with low native plants, including the related Phyla nodiflora.
Ecology
The small flowers of the family provide nectar and pollen to insects. The inflorescences of Lantana camara particularly attract butterflies, bees and other insects, while the flowers of Verbena and Phyla species are visited by smaller pollinators.
The native species growing in wet and seasonally flooded sites form part of specialized plant communities. Their presence or abundance may be significantly affected by changes in the duration of flooding, soil moisture and water management.
The creeping species of Phyla quickly cover bare surfaces and contribute to soil stabilization. When the species involved is the invasive Phyla canescens, however, the formation of dense cover may restrict the germination and growth of other low-growing plants.
Reproduction and dispersal
Pollination is carried out mainly by insects. The small tubular flowers provide nectar, while the dense inflorescences enable pollinators to visit many flowers within a short period.
Verbena and Phyla species produce small dry fruits or one-seeded segments, which are dispersed by water, gravity, animals, mud and the movement of soil. In moisture-loving species, flowing water can contribute significantly to the transport of seeds or plant fragments.
Species of the genus Phyla also spread vegetatively because their creeping stems can root at the nodes. Even detached stem fragments may establish new plants when transported to suitable moist soils.
The fleshy fruits of Lantana camara are eaten by birds, which can carry the seeds to new locations.
Adaptations to the environment
The most important adaptations of the members of the family in Cyprus include:
- The development of creeping stems that root at the nodes.
- The ability to survive in seasonally wet or periodically flooded soils.
- The production of numerous small seeds.
- Vegetative reproduction through stem fragments.
- The transport of seeds and plant fragments by water.
- The attraction of many different pollinators.
- The ability of alien species to become established in disturbed sites.
Economic and ecological importance
Lantana camara is widely cultivated as an ornamental because of its prolonged flowering, colourful inflorescences and tolerance of drought. However, all parts of the plant, particularly the unripe fruits and leaves, may contain toxic substances. They should not be used as food or medicinal material without specialist knowledge.
Verbena officinalis has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine. Traditional use does not constitute proof of effectiveness or safety and should not be confused with evidence-based medical treatment.
Species of the genus Phyla are used in some countries as ground-cover plants. The use of Phyla canescens should be avoided near natural wetlands and other sensitive areas because of its capacity to spread.
Ecologically, the native members of the family participate in the plant communities of wet and disturbed habitats and provide food for insects and other organisms.
Threats and protection
The main threats to the native species include:
- The drainage or alteration of wetlands.
- The modification and clearing of natural watercourses.
- Excessive water extraction and alteration of natural water flow.
- The use of herbicides on banks, irrigation channels and cultivated land.
- Building development and the destruction of seasonally wet sites.
- Competition from alien and invasive plants.
- The potential genetic or ecological effect of Phyla canescens on the native Phyla nodiflora.
The protection of natural and seasonal wetlands, the maintenance of natural hydrology and the avoidance of indiscriminate herbicide use are essential conservation measures.
Particular attention is required for the early recognition and control of Phyla canescens. Its removal must be carried out carefully because small stem fragments can survive and establish new colonies.
