Σύγχρονες ταξινομικές πηγές, όπως το Plants of the World Online, μεταφέρουν το taxon στο γένος Valeriana και δέχονται το όνομα Valeriana orbiculata.

Text by George Konstantinou
The family Valerianaceae, known as the valerian family, is a group of flowering plants belonging to the order Dipsacales. According to its traditional taxonomic circumscription, it includes approximately 8 genera and more than 300 species, distributed mainly throughout the temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere, the Mediterranean and the mountainous regions of South America.
In modern phylogenetic systems, such as APG IV, Valerianaceae is not usually recognized as a separate family but is included within the family Caprifoliaceae, mainly as the subfamily Valerianoideae. Furthermore, some recent taxonomic treatments include the genera Centranthus and Valerianella within the more broadly circumscribed genus Valeriana. This article faithfully follows the taxonomic arrangement and nomenclature of the organized checklist of the Cyprus flora, in which the family Valerianaceae and the genera Centranthus, Valeriana and Valerianella are retained.
According to the organized checklist, the family Valerianaceae is represented in Cyprus by 3 genera and 13 taxa. Of these, 11 are native non-endemic, 1 is endemic to Cyprus and 1 is alien or naturalized.
General characteristics
The members of the family are mainly annual, biennial or perennial herbs. The leaves are usually opposite, without stipules, simple or pinnately divided, with entire, toothed or deeply divided blades.
The flowers are generally small and arranged in cymose, corymbose or densely branched inflorescences. The corolla is fused, tubular or funnel-shaped and usually terminates in five lobes. In the genus Centranthus, the corolla bears a characteristic spur. There are usually three stamens.
The ovary is inferior and consists of three carpels, but usually only one chamber remains fertile and contains a single ovule. The fruit is dry and one-seeded. In several members of the family, the calyx develops after flowering into a hairy or feathery pappus, which facilitates the dispersal of the fruit by wind.
Habitats in Cyprus
The plants of the family occur in open rocky ground, phrygana, grasslands, slopes, rock crevices, roadsides, cultivated and abandoned land, as well as other disturbed sites.
Most of the Cypriot species of the genus Valerianella are small winter and spring annual herbs. They complete their biological cycle before the intense summer drought and survive the unfavourable period as seeds in the soil. The examination of the mature fruits and the shape of the persistent calyx is necessary for the reliable identification of many species of the genus.
The alien Centranthus ruber is cultivated as an ornamental and may escape from gardens. It establishes itself on old walls, slopes, roadsides, rocky sites and in inhabited areas.

The endemic taxon of Cyprus
Centranthus calcitrapa subsp. orbiculatus is endemic to Cyprus, meaning that its natural distribution is restricted exclusively to the island. It is an annual plant adapted to the Mediterranean seasonal cycle and occurs in open, rocky and other suitable natural sites from low to mountainous elevations.
Modern taxonomic sources, such as Plants of the World Online, transfer the taxon to the genus Valeriana and accept the name Valeriana orbiculata. In the organized checklist of the Cyprus flora, it is recorded under the name Centranthus calcitrapa subsp. orbiculatus, which is also followed in this article.
Ecology
The species of Valerianaceae form part of the herbaceous vegetation of Mediterranean ecosystems. Their flowers provide nectar and pollen to various insects, including bees, flies and butterflies.
The annual species of the genus Valerianella make use of the moist and relatively mild period from autumn to spring. The production of seeds before the beginning of the summer drought is an important adaptation to the climatic conditions of Cyprus.
Differences in the morphology of the fruits and calyx among the species of Valerianella are associated with different dispersal methods and constitute important taxonomic characters.
Reproduction and dispersal
Reproduction takes place through seeds. Pollination is carried out mainly by insects, which are attracted by the flowers and their nectar.
In taxa that develop a feathery or hairy pappus, the mature fruits can be carried by the wind. In other species, dispersal takes place over shorter distances through gravity, water runoff, animals or the movement of soil. Annual species can form soil seed banks, from which new plants emerge when suitable moisture and temperature conditions occur.
Adaptations to the Mediterranean environment
The most important adaptations of the Cypriot members of the family include:
- The short winter and spring biological cycle of the annual species.
- Survival during the dry season in the form of resistant seeds.
- Growth in shallow, rocky and relatively nutrient-poor soils.
- The formation of a soil seed bank.
- The dispersal of fruits by wind or other natural mechanisms.
- The ability of certain species to establish themselves in rock crevices, walls and disturbed sites.
Economic and ecological importance
Some members of the group have medicinal, nutritional or ornamental importance internationally. The underground stems and roots of Valeriana officinalis are traditionally used in herbal preparations. However, this particular species is not included among the family’s taxa recorded in the organized checklist of Cyprus, and its properties should not automatically be attributed to the Cypriot species.
Valerianella locusta is cultivated in other countries as a leafy vegetable known as corn salad or lamb’s lettuce, but it is also not included in this particular Cyprus checklist.
Centranthus ruber is widely used as an ornamental plant. Its ability to escape from cultivation and establish itself in natural or semi-natural sites requires monitoring.
Ecologically, the native taxa contribute to the diversity of the spring herbaceous vegetation and form part of food relationships with insects and other organisms.
Threats and protection
The main potential threats include building development, road construction, quarrying activities, agricultural intensification, the use of herbicides, the destruction of rocky habitats and the excessive cleaning of old walls and slopes.
The protection of natural habitats, the avoidance of unnecessary herbicide use and the conservation of the natural soil seed bank are important measures for annual species.
The monitoring of the populations of the endemic Centranthus calcitrapa subsp. orbiculatus is particularly important, as it represents a unique element of the Cyprus flora. At the same time, the spread of the alien Centranthus ruber should be monitored so that possible effects on natural habitats can be detected at an early stage.
