Σύμφωνα με το Plants of the World Online, η οικογένεια περιλαμβάνει 59 αποδεκτά γένη και περισσότερα από 2.000 είδη.

Είναι πολυετές φυτό και αναγνωρίζεται ως αποδεκτό είδος από το Plants of the World Online.

Hand.

Text by George Konstantinou

The family Urticaceae, known as the nettle family, is a family of angiosperm plants belonging to the order Rosales. It includes herbs, shrubs, small and large trees and, more rarely, climbing plants.

According to Plants of the World Online, the family includes 59 accepted genera and more than 2,000 species. It has an almost worldwide distribution, with particularly great diversity in tropical and subtropical regions.

In Cyprus, the family Urticaceae is represented in the organized checklist by 2 genera and 8 taxa. Of these, 6 are native and non-endemic, 1 is endemic to Cyprus and 1 taxon has an uncertain status.

General characteristics

The members of the family are annual or perennial herbs, shrubs and trees. Many species have fleshy or watery stems, while others possess a woody trunk.

The leaves are simple and usually alternate or opposite. They have stipules and often possess a toothed margin. The surface may be smooth, hairy or covered with stinging hairs.

The flowers are very small, greenish and without conspicuous petals. They may be bisexual or unisexual, with male and female flowers occurring on the same or different plants.

The perianth usually consists of 4 or 5 small tepals. The male flowers generally possess an equal number of stamens, which are located opposite the tepals.

The ovary is superior, single-chambered and contains one ovule. The fruit is usually a small achene containing one seed.

Stinging hairs

Species of the genus Urtica possess characteristic stinging hairs on their leaves and stems. Each hair functions like a very fine, fragile needle.

When touched, the tip of the hair breaks and leaves a sharp point that can penetrate the skin. Chemical substances are then released, causing immediate burning, itching, redness and local irritation.

The reaction is usually temporary, but its intensity depends on the species, the extent of contact and the sensitivity of the individual.

Species of the genus Parietaria do not possess the powerful stinging hairs of nettles, although their stems and leaves may bear simple hairs.

Habitats in Cyprus

The Cypriot species of the family occur mainly in locations rich in nitrogen and organic matter. They grow on old walls, in rock crevices, ruins, shaded banks, roadsides, uncultivated fields, gardens, settlements and locations close to animal enclosures.

Species of the genus Parietaria are particularly characteristic of old stone walls, limestone rocks and shaded urban or agricultural locations.

Species of the genus Urtica usually prefer moist or seasonally moist, fertile soils. They frequently appear in disturbed locations where nutrients accumulate.

The endemic Urtica cypria is a perennial species and constitutes a distinct component of the Cypriot flora.

Species of the genus Parietaria

Species of the genus Parietaria are small annual or perennial herbs. They have slender, often reddish stems and simple, entire leaves.

The name Parietaria derives from the Latin word paries, meaning wall, and refers to the frequent growth of the plants on old walls and rocky surfaces.

The flowers are extremely small and are grouped in clusters in the leaf axils. Pollen is transported mainly by wind.

Parietaria judaica is a perennial plant that can form extensive stands on walls and in shaded rocky locations. Parietaria cretica and Parietaria lusitanica are smaller plants with different morphological and ecological adaptations.

Species of the genus Urtica

Species of the genus Urtica are known as nettles. They usually possess opposite leaves with toothed margins and numerous stinging hairs.

Urtica membranacea is an annual plant with characteristic, often elongated and one-sided inflorescences.

Urtica pilulifera is recognized by its almost spherical clusters of female flowers and fruits, to which the name pilulifera refers.

Urtica urens is a smaller annual species with strongly stinging hairs. It often occurs in gardens, cultivated ground and other nutrient-rich locations.

The endemic Urtica cypria

Urtica cypria is endemic to Cyprus and does not occur naturally in any other country. It is a perennial plant and is recognized as an accepted species by Plants of the World Online.

The name was originally published as Urtica dioica subsp. cypria H.Lindb. Following a reassessment of its morphological and taxonomic characteristics, it is now treated as a separate species under the accepted name Urtica cypria (H.Lindb.) Hand.

Its recognition as a separate endemic species increases its importance for the conservation of the plant biodiversity of Cyprus.

The protection of known populations and the avoidance of confusion with other perennial Urtica species are essential for its correct monitoring.

Urtica dioica subsp. dioica and its uncertain status

Urtica dioica subsp. dioica is a perennial, rhizomatous plant with a wide distribution in Europe and Asia. It often forms dense colonies through its underground rhizomes.

In the organized checklist of the flora of Cyprus, it is included in the category Uncertain status. Therefore, the presence of a stable and native population in Cyprus should not be considered confirmed.

The record requires examination of historical references, herbarium specimens and modern observations. Particular care is required to avoid confusing it with the endemic Urtica cypria.

Pollination

Pollination takes place mainly by wind. The flowers do not possess strong colours, fragrance or nectar because they do not need to attract animals.

In the male flowers, the stamens are bent inwards before maturity. When the flower opens, the stamens spring suddenly outwards and release a small cloud of pollen.

The lightweight pollen grains are easily transported by wind and can cover considerable distances.

Pollen and allergies

The pollen of certain species of the family is an important airborne allergen. In particular, pollen of the genus Parietaria can cause allergic rhinitis, conjunctivitis and asthma symptoms in sensitive individuals.

The long flowering period of certain species and their presence within towns and villages increase the population’s exposure to pollen.

The allergenic effect of pollen is unrelated to the stinging hairs. These are two different mechanisms: pollen causes an allergic reaction through the respiratory system, while the hairs cause direct local irritation of the skin.

Reproduction and dispersal

Reproduction takes place mainly by seeds. The small achenes fall close to the parent plant or are transported by wind, water, animals, soil and human activities.

Annual species form a soil seed bank, allowing them to reappear when suitable moisture and temperature conditions develop.

Perennial species can also spread vegetatively through rhizomes or rooting stems. Vegetative reproduction allows the formation of dense local colonies.

Adaptations

Stinging hairs constitute an effective defence against herbivorous animals. Immediate irritation discourages many animals from consuming the leaves and young stems.

The production of numerous small seeds allows the rapid colonization of disturbed and nutrient-rich soils.

Perennial species store nutrients in underground organs and can resprout after cutting, grazing or seasonal drought.

Species of the genus Parietaria can grow in small wall and rock crevices, where there is very little soil but reduced competition from larger plants.

Ecological and economic importance

Species of the family provide food for the caterpillars of butterflies and other insects. Their stands provide cover for invertebrates and small vertebrates.

Nettles accumulate nutrients in their tissues and, when they decompose, return organic matter and nitrogen to the soil.

Various Urtica species were historically used as food after appropriate processing, as animal feed, as plant dye and as a source of strong fibres for ropes and textiles.

Uses known for Urtica dioica or other species should not automatically be attributed to all Cypriot taxa. Collection requires reliable identification and the avoidance of polluted locations.

Threats and protection

Common species of disturbed habitats are generally resilient, but local populations may be affected by herbicide use, the destruction of old walls and the clearance of natural vegetation.

Interventions in shaded and moist locations, water diversion, prolonged drought and the destruction of microhabitats can affect perennial taxa.

The protection of the endemic Urtica cypria is particularly important. Correct identification, population monitoring and protection of its known locations are required.

Further taxonomic and floristic investigation of Urtica dioica subsp. dioica is required to clarify its status in Cyprus.
