Top Pools, Middle Pools και Motorway Pools
Top Pools
34.753967, 32.507756
Google Maps – Agia Varvara Pools
Middle Pools
Motorway Pools
Little Crake – Zapornia parva
Baillon's Crake – Zapornia pusilla
Spotted Crake – Porzana porzana
Ο σύγχρονος οδηγός Birds of Cyprus αναφέρει και τα τρία είδη στην Αγία Βαρβάρα, μαζί με το Great Snipe (Gallinago media).
Τον Μάρτιο του 2025 η περιοχή φιλοξένησε ταυτόχρονα Baillon's Crake, έξι Little Crakes και δύο Spotted Crakes, ενώ στις αρχές Απριλίου εξακολουθούσαν να υπάρχουν παρόμοιοι αριθμοί Little Crakes.
Little Bittern – Ixobrychus minutus
Black-crowned Night Heron – Nycticorax nycticorax
Squacco Heron – Ardeola ralloides
Cattle Egret – Bubulcus ibis
Grey Heron – Ardea cinerea
Purple Heron – Ardea purpurea
Little Egret – Egretta garzetta
Τον Απρίλιο του 2024, στις χαμηλότερες και ανώτερες δεξαμενές παρατηρήθηκαν μεταξύ άλλων Little Crakes, Little Bitterns, Night Herons, Squacco Herons, Purple Herons, Little Egret και Grey Heron.
Σε καταγραφή του Νοεμβρίου 2022 παρατηρήθηκαν Garganey, Eurasian Wigeon, Mallard, Northern Pintail, Eurasian Teal, Little Grebe, Baillon's Crake, Common Coot και Common Moorhen.
Ο οδηγός Birds of Cyprus αναφέρει Bonelli's Eagle και Long-legged Buzzard καθ' όλη τη διάρκεια του έτους.

Agia Varvara Pools – Top Pools, Middle Pools and Motorway Pools – One of the Most Important Birdwatching Sites in Paphos – Cyprus
Text by George Konstantinou.
The Agia Varvara Pools
The Agia Varvara Pools, situated in the Ezousa Valley in the Paphos District, have developed into one of the best-known and most productive birdwatching areas in western Cyprus. They are widely known among local and visiting birdwatchers as the Agia Varvara Pools or Agia Varvara Soakaways.
The pools lie within a rich agricultural landscape crossed by the seasonal Ezousa River. The combination of artificial pools, riverbed, reedbeds, tamarisks, tall grasses, scrub and cultivated land creates an exceptionally varied mosaic of habitats. A modern birding guide describes Agia Varvara as particularly productive during migration, with crakes, herons, waders and Great Snipe among the birds associated with the river and soakaways.
The area has become especially popular during spring and autumn migration, attracting birdwatchers and wildlife photographers from Cyprus and abroad. The regular appearance of scarce migrants and occasional major rarities has further established Agia Varvara as an important birding locality in the Paphos area.
Top Pools, Middle Pools and Motorway Pools
Birdwatchers commonly distinguish different groups of pools within the wider Agia Varvara wetland system. Practical field names are used to identify the different sections:
Top Pools – the upper pools, closer to the village.
Middle Pools – the intermediate group of pools.
Motorway Pools – the lower pools beside the A6 motorway, also referred to by birdwatchers as the Motorway Pools or motorway soakaways.
These different sections should be considered parts of the same broader wetland and river-valley system. Their birdlife can vary considerably according to water levels, vegetation and season.
Top Pools
The Top Pools form one of the principal birdwatching areas at Agia Varvara. The main birding locality is centred approximately at:
34.753967, 32.507756
Google Maps – Agia Varvara Pools
This position is given in the modern Birds of Cyprus site guide. The guide describes large soakaway pools on either side of the river north of the ford and notes that they are regularly filled and emptied.
The changing water levels are extremely important for birdlife. Open water, shallow margins, exposed mud and dense reed vegetation can occur within a relatively small area, providing habitat for birds with very different ecological requirements.
Middle Pools
The Middle Pools form the intermediate section of the Agia Varvara pool system.
Their character changes according to water levels and management. At different times individual pools may contain open water, shallow muddy margins, dense reeds or extensive emergent vegetation.
This dynamic character greatly increases habitat diversity. Conditions suitable for crakes may occur in one pool while another provides feeding habitat for waders, herons or wagtails.
Motorway Pools
The Motorway Pools lie farther downstream near the A6 motorway and form another important part of the birding area.
Recent birding records continue to use the name Motorway Pools. In spring 2026, for example, Baillon's Crake was recorded specifically at the Agia Varvara Motorway Pools.
The lower pools near the motorway bridge have repeatedly produced notable birds. During an April 2024 visit, observers recorded two male Little Crakes and two Little Bitterns there. Across the lower pools and upper soakaways they also found Night Herons, Squacco Herons, Purple Herons, Little Egret and Grey Heron.
An artificial wetland of considerable importance
The pools are artificial water bodies associated with water management in the Ezousa Valley. Over time, however, they have developed considerable ecological importance.
Reeds and other wetland vegetation provide shelter for secretive birds. Shallow margins and exposed mud offer feeding habitat for waders, while open water is used by waterbirds. Tamarisk, scrub, agricultural fields and the river corridor further increase the diversity of habitats.
The wider Agia Varvara agricultural area is also recognised as an important migration route and stopover. Birding tour literature specifically notes that the soakaway pools attract herons, waders and crakes.
The famous crakes of Agia Varvara
Agia Varvara has become particularly famous among birdwatchers for its crakes.
Three especially important species regularly associated with the pools during migration are:
Little Crake – Zapornia parva
Baillon's Crake – Zapornia pusilla
Spotted Crake – Porzana porzana
The modern Birds of Cyprus guide lists all three for the Agia Varvara river and soakaways in spring, together with Great Snipe.
BirdLife Cyprus records also document Little Crake at the Agia Varvara Pools, including a juvenile recorded in August 2021.
The spring of 2025 was particularly remarkable. By early April, numbers of Little Crakes at Agia Varvara were among the highest of an exceptional spring, while Baillon's Crake was also present. Later in April the site held at least four Spotted Crakes, a Baillon's Crake and several Little Crakes.
Herons
The pools are also particularly productive for herons and related wetland birds.
Species recorded include:
Little Bittern – Ixobrychus minutus
Black-crowned Night Heron – Nycticorax nycticorax
Squacco Heron – Ardeola ralloides
Cattle Egret – Bubulcus ibis
Grey Heron – Ardea cinerea
Purple Heron – Ardea purpurea
Little Egret – Egretta garzetta
During a 2023 visit, Little Bitterns and several Squacco Herons were present at the wetlands, while four Cattle Egrets were found at pools beneath the motorway viaduct.
The following spring, Little Bittern, Night Heron, Squacco Heron, Purple Heron, Little Egret and Grey Heron were all recorded across the lower and upper pools.
Waders and other wetland birds
When water levels fall, shallow areas and exposed muddy margins can provide excellent feeding habitat for waders.
Species recorded at Agia Varvara include Black-winged Stilt, Common Sandpiper, Wood Sandpiper, Common Snipe and other migrating waders.
In April 2024, Black-winged Stilt, Common Sandpiper and Wood Sandpiper were feeding in the shallows, together with several Yellow Wagtails of different forms.
Great Snipe (Gallinago media) is another particularly interesting migrant associated with Agia Varvara. The species is specifically listed for the site in Birds of Cyprus, and several were reported there during the exceptional spring migration of 2025.
A major rarity – the first Lesser Moorhen recorded in Cyprus
One of the most remarkable events in the recent ornithological history of Agia Varvara occurred on 3 April 2025, when a Lesser Moorhen (Gallinula angulata) was discovered there.
It represented the first record of Lesser Moorhen for Cyprus. Its discovery generated exceptional interest among birdwatchers, with BirdGuides reporting that the gathering to see it became one of the largest rarity gatherings recorded on the island.
The bird remained for an extraordinary period. It was still present during the latter part of April and remained at Agia Varvara into late May.
Its prolonged stay allowed many local and visiting birdwatchers and photographers to observe and photograph a species never previously recorded in Cyprus.
An exceptional spring in 2025
The Lesser Moorhen was not the only remarkable feature of the 2025 spring migration at Agia Varvara.
During April the pools supported impressive numbers and combinations of secretive wetland migrants. At different stages there were Little Crakes, Baillon's Crakes, Spotted Crakes, Great Snipe and Savi's Warblers, together with numerous other migrants.
BirdGuides consequently referred to Agia Varvara as a hotspot during its account of the exceptional 2025 Cyprus spring migration.
The events of that spring demonstrated the remarkable potential of these relatively small artificial wetlands to provide temporary feeding and resting habitat for birds travelling enormous distances between Africa, Europe and Asia.
The Ezousa Valley as a migration corridor
The importance of Agia Varvara extends beyond the pools themselves.
The wider Ezousa Valley forms an important route and stopover for migrating birds. The seasonal river, wetland vegetation, cultivated fields, scrub and open valley provide a sequence of habitats through which migrants can move, feed and rest.
Professional birding itineraries describe Agia Varvara as a major route and stopover for migrants, with the soakaway pools being particularly attractive to wetland species.
Swallows, martins and swifts feed above the water and fields, while bushes, trees, reeds and agricultural areas can hold a wide variety of migrating passerines.
Raptors
The open character of the Ezousa Valley also provides opportunities to observe birds of prey.
Bonelli's Eagle (Aquila fasciata) and Long-legged Buzzard (Buteo rufinus) are among the characteristic raptors of the wider area. Both are specifically mentioned in the modern site account for Agia Varvara.
Peregrine Falcon and migrating raptors may also be encountered, adding another dimension to birdwatching in the valley.
Birdwatchers and wildlife photographers
The reputation of Agia Varvara now extends well beyond the Paphos District. Local birdwatchers, visiting birders and wildlife photographers regularly visit the pools, particularly during migration.
The occurrence of a major rarity can rapidly attract large numbers of observers. The Lesser Moorhen of 2025 provided the clearest example, drawing one of the largest birdwatching gatherings associated with a rarity in Cyprus.
The pools are particularly attractive to photographers because secretive wetland birds occasionally emerge from the reeds and feed along relatively open margins, providing unusual opportunities to observe and photograph species such as Little and Baillon's Crakes.
A constantly changing wetland
One of the most fascinating characteristics of the Agia Varvara Pools is their constant change.
The soakaways are regularly filled and emptied, meaning that their ecological character can alter dramatically. One pool may contain deep open water, another shallow water and mud, while another may be dominated by reeds.
These changing conditions explain why different groups of birds may favour different pools at different times and why birdwatchers often examine the entire system rather than a single water body.
A 2019 birding account, for example, found the soakaway pools in particularly suitable condition for crakes and herons.
Best seasons for birdwatching
The principal birdwatching periods are:
Spring migration: March–May
Autumn migration: September–November
These are also the periods specifically recommended for Agia Varvara in the modern Birds of Cyprus site guide.
Spring can be especially rewarding for crakes, herons, Great Snipe, waders and passerine migrants, while autumn brings another major movement of birds travelling south.
Nevertheless, Agia Varvara remains interesting outside the main migration periods because resident and wintering species also use the valley.
Responsible birdwatching and photography
The increasing popularity of Agia Varvara makes responsible behaviour particularly important.
Crakes, bitterns and many other wetland birds depend on dense vegetation for shelter. Birdwatchers and photographers should avoid entering reedbeds, approaching birds too closely or repeatedly disturbing individuals from feeding and resting areas.
The pools are also situated within an active agricultural landscape. Farm access, crops, private land and local activities should always be respected.

The Agia Varvara Pools today
The Agia Varvara Pools provide a striking example of how artificial water bodies can acquire considerable value for wildlife.
Together with the Ezousa River and the surrounding agricultural valley, the Top Pools, Middle Pools and Motorway Pools provide water, food, shelter and resting habitat for resident and migratory birds.
Little, Baillon's and Spotted Crakes, herons, waders, Great Snipe, raptors and numerous passerines have made the area well known among birdwatchers. The extraordinary spring of 2025, culminating in the first Lesser Moorhen recorded in Cyprus, further highlighted the ornithological importance and potential of the site.
Today the Agia Varvara Pools are firmly established as an important birdwatching destination in the Paphos District and as a place where every migration season can produce unexpected and sometimes exceptional observations.
