Elephant’s ear – Colocasia sp. – Κολοκασία – Cyprus

Striking foliage above the water
Colocasia sp. is a cultivated plant with large, heart-shaped leaves and long stalks that create a distinctly tropical appearance. The English name Elephant’s ear refers to the size and shape of its leaves. This name is also applied to other large-leaved aroids, so it does not provide reliable identification on its own.
The photographed plant grows in a water tank, with its leaves and most of their stalks above the surface. It is recorded here as Colocasia sp., indicating a member of the genus Colocasia without identification to a particular species.
Botanical identity and origin
The genus Colocasia Schott belongs to Araceae, the arum family and is native to tropical and subtropical Asia.
It includes perennial herbs with underground storage organs. Depending on the species and conditions, they may retain their foliage throughout the year or enter dormancy. In the wild, members of the genus occupy humid environments near streams, ponds and other moisture-rich locations.
The abbreviation sp. is not a species or cultivar name. It indicates identification at genus level.
Description of the photographed plant
The photographs show large green leaves with prominent, pale veins. The blade is broad, with two rounded rear lobes and an elongated tip pointing downwards.
Long leaf stalks hold the blades above the water. Their attachment lies within the leaf blade rather than precisely at its edge. This leaf arrangement is termed peltate.
The photograph containing a hand provides a useful visual comparison of scale, although it is not an exact measurement. No inflorescence appears in the photographs.
The observation in the water tank
Cultivation in a water tank shows that this particular plant grows with its base in permanently wet conditions. Its leaves remain above the surface; it is not a submerged aquatic plant.
This observation is consistent with the presence of moisture-loving members within the genus. However, requirements vary between species and cultivated forms. Not all colocasias tolerate the same water depth, low temperatures or combinations of cold and saturated substrate.
In water gardens, planting depth should suit the particular plant and its previous growing conditions.
Life cycle and leaf renewal
Colocasias are perennial plants. During active growth they produce successive new leaves, while older leaves age and gradually dry out. Losing an old leaf does not necessarily mean that the plant has completed its life cycle.
In forms that enter dormancy, above-ground foliage may diminish or disappear while the storage organs remain alive. New growth develops when suitable conditions return.
Cultivated forms are often propagated by division and separation of daughter plants. This preserves the characteristics of the parent plant.
Flowers and inflorescences
As in other aroids, the tiny flowers are grouped on a fleshy axis called a spadix, accompanied by a specialised bract known as the spathe.
What is commonly called a “flower” in these plants is therefore the entire inflorescence together with its spathe. Flowering in cultivation may be less frequent than leaf production, and the main ornamental attraction is the foliage.
Cultivation in Cyprus
This occurrence concerns a planted specimen in an artificial water tank and does not represent a record of a wild population in Cyprus.
Growing colocasias requires conditions appropriate to the particular form: sufficient moisture during active growth, protection from cold and lighting that does not stress the leaves. Many cultivated forms grow well in bright, filtered light.
In a tank, monitoring water level and the condition of the plant’s base is useful. Fertiliser should be applied moderately, particularly where the water also supports other organisms.
Uses and the connection with taro
The photographed plant’s principal use is ornamental. Its large foliage provides volume and shade and is used in water gardens, courtyards and tropical-style plantings.
The same genus includes edible taro, Colocasia esculenta, an important crop in many countries and familiar in Cypriot cuisine. The food use of that particular species does not mean that every colocasia or ornamental cultivar is suitable for consumption. The plant featured here remains identified only to genus.
Irritating substances and possible problems
Colocasias contain needle-like calcium oxalate crystals that can cause irritation. An ornamental plant of uncertain identity should not be eaten. Gloves are useful during cutting or division, and sap should be kept away from the eyes.
Spider mites, aphids and whiteflies are reported on cultivated colocasias. Some brown spots and localised dry areas are visible on the photographed leaves, but their appearance alone does not allow a reliable diagnosis.
Plant waste and propagation material from water gardens should not be discarded into natural streams or wetlands, as some cultivated members of the genus can establish outside cultivation in warm climates.
