Megerlia cf. truncata – Brachiopods attached to the coral Dendrophyllia ramea – Cyprus
Text by George Konstantinou
Small organisms on a branching coral
The branching skeletons of corals provide settlement surfaces for many small marine organisms. Communities of bryozoans, tube-dwelling polychaetes, sponges and brachiopods can develop on their branches and among their ramifications. The coral creates hard substrate and microhabitats that increase the complexity of the marine environment.
On a specimen of the coral Dendrophyllia ramea from Cyprus, I observed small brachiopods attached to its skeleton. The specimens are provisionally recorded as Megerlia cf. truncata. The designation “cf.” indicates resemblance to Megerlia truncata, without treating their identification at species level as definitive.
Origin of the specimen and depth
The coral bearing the attached brachiopods was given to me by a fisherman who accidentally brought it up in his nets. It originated from the same marine area off Protaras and the same depth zone investigated during the CYCLAMEN expedition.
The relevant publication states that the June 2015 expedition conducted video surveys and sampling using the remotely operated vehicle MAX ROVER at two stations, at depths of 118–477 metres. This range describes the expedition’s research sampling and the depth zone from which the specimen originated; it is not an exact measurement of the location where the coral became caught in the nets.
The recovery of the coral together with its associated organisms illustrates how the accidental removal of a colony can affect an entire small community. Further information about the research voyage is also presented in the account of the HCMR research vessel Aegaeo in Cyprus.
Description of Megerlia truncata
Megerlia truncata (Linnaeus, 1767) is a small marine brachiopod with a yellowish to light brown shell. Adults are generally approximately one to two centimetres in size. Their outline is often transversely oval, wider than long, while shape and convexity vary between individuals.
The shell bears fine radial ribbing and concentric growth lines. It consists of two valves, ventral and dorsal, which articulate in the posterior region. Juveniles may have different proportions from adults, gradually developing a broader outline.
Reliable identification involves examining shell ornamentation, outline, articulation and the pedicle opening. Internal features are also important, particularly the calcareous skeleton supporting the lophophore. The provisional identification Megerlia cf. truncata is retained for these specimens.
Brachiopods and bivalve molluscs
Although resembling small bivalve shells, brachiopods constitute a separate animal phylum, Brachiopoda, and do not belong to Mollusca. Brachiopod valves are dorsal and ventral, whereas those of bivalve molluscs are left and right.
The plane of symmetry in brachiopods generally passes through each valve. Their shells’ resemblance to those of bivalves does not reflect an equivalent similarity in internal anatomy or attachment mechanism.
Attachment to the coral
Megerlia truncata attaches to hard surfaces using a fleshy pedicle emerging through an opening near the posterior region of the shell. The pedicle anchors the animal to the substrate, while the valves open to allow water circulation and feeding.
On my specimen, the brachiopods were attached to the skeleton of Dendrophyllia ramea, together with other encrusting organisms. Their presence does not by itself indicate parasitism or consumption of the coral. The skeleton is used as a supporting surface.
Associations between brachiopods and coral substrates are also known from other regions. A study of living Megerlia truncata described individuals attached to dead portions of growing colonies of the coral Dendrophyllia cornigera in the northeastern Atlantic.
Distribution and habitat
Megerlia truncata occurs in the Mediterranean Sea and the eastern North Atlantic. It is associated mainly with hard substrates on the continental shelf and in deeper areas, but has also been recorded in shallower, dark submarine caves.
In the Mediterranean, it is frequently reported from approximately 60 to more than 300 metres, although these are not absolute distribution limits. Its distribution is influenced by the availability of stable surfaces, water circulation, food supply and sediment deposition.
Published records from Cyprus
The study by Achilleos, Jimenez, Berning and Petrou published in 2020 mentions brachiopods among the material collected during the CYCLAMEN expedition off Protaras. The same passage describes the collection of bryozoans from five colonies of Dendrophyllia ramea, while four additional coral specimens accidentally recovered by fishermen in the same area were also examined.
The discussion section of the same paper names Megerlia truncata as one of the hard substrates on which bryozoans were found. The publication therefore documents its presence in the Cypriot material examined, without explicitly identifying the particular sampling event from which it originated or whether it was attached to a specific coral colony.
My observation concerns the direct attachment of the provisionally identified Megerlia cf. truncata to the coral skeleton.
Feeding
Brachiopods are suspension feeders. They collect microscopic organic particles from the water using the lophophore, a specialised organ bearing numerous ciliated tentacles.
The cilia generate water currents and transport suitable particles towards the mouth. In Megerlia truncata, the lophophore has a complex arrangement supported by an internal calcareous skeleton. The animal feeds on material suspended in the water rather than on the skeleton to which it is attached.
Life cycle and development
The brachiopod life cycle includes embryonic development, a larval stage, settlement on suitable substrate and development of the attached juvenile. Details of reproduction and larval life differ between species.
Lophophore development and changes in shell shape during growth have been studied in Megerlia truncata. As the individual grows, its shell increases through the addition of new material, with successive growth lines recorded on its surface. For these particular Cypriot specimens, there are no data establishing their age, reproductive season or larval duration.
Ecological importance and conservation
Brachiopods contribute to hard-substrate communities and to the transfer of suspended organic matter towards the seabed. Their shells can support other small organisms, creating successive levels of settlement on the same surface.
Protecting coral habitats is also important for this less conspicuous fauna. Impacts from fishing gear and litter have been documented in the Cypriot Dendrophyllia ramea population. Preserving the colonies also helps preserve the organisms using their skeletons.
