Cyprus cedar – Cedrus brevifolia (Hook.f.) Elwes & A.Henry – Endemic to Cyprus
TEXT AND PHOTOS: GEORGE KONSTANTINOU – Cedar Valley, Paphos Forest, 19 July 2013
The Cyprus cedar, Cedrus brevifolia, is one of the island’s most important endemic trees. Its natural distribution is restricted to a small part of Paphos Forest, where it forms a unique forest habitat. Its limited geographical range, evolutionary history and distinctive position among Mediterranean cedars give it significance far beyond Cyprus.
It is an evergreen conifer belonging to the pine family, Pinaceae. The name brevifolia means “short-leaved”, referring to its characteristically short needles. It is a true cedar of the genus Cedrus, closely related to the cedar of Lebanon.
Description and identification
The tree commonly reaches approximately 15–20 metres, although taller specimens occur. Young trees have a more conical crown, which broadens with age and often becomes irregular or almost flat-topped. The initially relatively smooth bark gradually becomes greyish and fissured.
The needles, usually 5–16 millimetres long, occur individually on long shoots and in dense clusters on short shoots. Their colour ranges from green to blue-green. Female cones stand upright on the branches and become brown at maturity.
In cedars, mature cones disintegrate on the tree, releasing their seeds. Consequently, individual cone scales may be found beneath a tree without the complete “pine cones” commonly seen beneath pines.
Natural distribution in Cyprus
Its best-known locality is Cedar Valley and the slopes of Tripylos, in the western part of the Troodos Mountains. Natural stands and groups of trees also occur at Mavroi Gremoi, Selladi tis Elias, Throni and Exo Mylos.
It grows mainly at elevations of approximately 900–1,400 metres. It forms pure stands or grows together with Turkish pine, Pinus brutia and golden oak, Quercus alnifolia.
It has also been planted outside its natural range. Plantations must be distinguished from indigenous populations: the presence of a planted cedar elsewhere in Cyprus or abroad does not change the endemic character of its natural distribution.
History: from antiquity to modern botany
The presence of cedar in Cyprus has been known since antiquity. LIFE-KEDROS highlights the reference made by Theophrastus, the great naturalist of the fourth–third centuries BC, in his Historia Plantarum. This account indicates that cedar was a recognised component of Cypriot vegetation long before its modern scientific description.
Its present scientific name developed much later. In 1879, Joseph Dalton Hooker described the Cypriot form as Cedrus libani var. brevifolia, treating it as a variety of the cedar of Lebanon. An article published in Nature in 1884 discussed Hooker’s announcement and the observations made in Cyprus by the traveller Samuel Baker.
In 1908, Elwes and Henry published the combination Cedrus brevifolia, recognising it at species level. It was subsequently also classified as a subspecies of the Lebanese cedar. This history reflects the development of scientific understanding of a tree already familiar to the island’s inhabitants.
Its relationship with the cedar of Lebanon
The Cyprus cedar is closely related to Cedrus libani. Different botanists have consequently treated it as a separate species, a subspecies or a variety of the Lebanese cedar.
Kew currently accepts Cedrus brevifolia as a species. Other taxonomic treatments retain a broader concept of C. libani. Short needles are a characteristic feature of the Cypriot tree, but they are not an absolute diagnostic character on their own, because morphological overlap occurs.
Whatever taxonomic rank is adopted, the natural Cypriot population represents a distinct and irreplaceable conservation unit.
Reproduction and life cycle
The Cyprus cedar is a gymnosperm and does not produce true fruits. Separate male and female cones usually develop on the same tree.
Wind pollination takes place mainly in September and October. Female cones mature almost two years later, in August–September. They subsequently disintegrate and release their winged seeds, mainly between September and November.
A study of its reproductive biology recorded germination in February–March under conditions simulating the natural wet season. The emerging seedling begins a long period of development, during which it must establish itself and survive Mediterranean summers.
Ecology and natural regeneration
Regeneration depends on more than seed production. Moisture, the location where seeds land, shade and competition from surrounding vegetation all influence establishment.
Young cedars have been recorded beneath the canopy or lateral shade of golden oak in natural stands. Their greater shade tolerance compared with Turkish pine influences the future composition of the forest.
An experimental comparison of young Cypriot and Lebanese cedars found an interesting response by the Cypriot material to moderate water stress. These findings apply to specific experimental conditions and do not mean that natural cedar forests are safe from prolonged drought.
Genetic diversity and conservation significance
Despite its restricted distribution, the Cyprus cedar retains high genetic diversity and significant genetic differentiation between parts of its population.
This has direct practical implications. Conservation should extend beyond the largest trees or the most familiar locality. Different natural stands require protection, while seed collection needs careful planning so that propagation material represents the species’ genetic variation.
Seed banks and appropriately documented plantings complement the protection of natural forests.
Uses, culture and tradition
Cedar wood was valued for its properties and workability. Traditional uses in Cyprus include doors, windows and ecclesiastical woodcarving, such as icon screens, church stalls and pulpits.
The cedar is also associated with local tradition as the “pine of the Virgin Mary”. According to the story, the pines bowed as the Virgin Mary passed through the Kykkos area, and she transformed them into cedars. This is a folk tradition expressing the tree’s place in local culture.
Today, the species’ principal value lies in conservation, research and its distinctive appearance. Scientific studies have examined the volatile constituents of its wood and resin. This research interest does not provide a reason to collect material from natural trees.
Cultivation and propagation
The Cyprus cedar can be cultivated as an ornamental tree where sufficient space is available for its development. It favours a sunny position and well-drained soil. Persistent waterlogging and poor drainage should be avoided.
Propagation is mainly by seed. The origin of the material is particularly important when the purpose is the restoration of natural populations rather than simply planting a garden tree.
Genetic resource management involves controlled seed collection, processing and storage. A conservation nursery has different requirements from ordinary ornamental horticulture. For private planting, legally nursery-grown trees are preferable to removing seedlings from the forest. Regular ornamental pruning is unnecessary for the tree’s natural form.
Insects, damage and management
Several insects associated with the Cyprus cedar can affect different stages of its life.
Megastigmus schimitscheki is a small hymenopteran whose larvae develop inside seeds. Infestation can reduce the quantity of sound reproductive material. A seed’s external appearance therefore does not always establish whether it is suitable for sowing.
An official Cypriot forestry report also includes Cyprus cedar among the hosts of the bark beetle Orthotomicus erosus. Assessment of such infestations should consider the overall condition of the trees and any preceding stress.
Management in a protected natural forest relies on monitoring, early diagnosis and targeted silvicultural measures. Pheromone traps can form part of an organised programme. The presence of insects alone does not justify widespread spraying or the unauthorised removal of trees.
The Red Data Book of the Flora of Cyprus
The Cyprus cedar is included in the Red Data Book of the Flora of Cyprus as Vulnerable – VU, under criterion D2.
This assessment is associated with its exceptionally restricted distribution and the population’s vulnerability to threats capable of affecting a substantial proportion of its natural range. It does not simply mean that few trees exist: even a population containing numerous individuals can be threatened when concentrated within a very small area.
The national assessment should also be distinguished from the global assessment. The relevant IUCN Red List assessment was published in 2011 under the name Cedrus libani var. brevifolia, also in the category Vulnerable. The different name reflects the taxonomic treatment used for that assessment.
Threats and protection
Its limited distribution increases the significance of any major disturbance. Forest fires, prolonged drought, tree dieback and damaging infestations can disproportionately affect a species without extensive natural populations elsewhere.
Its forests are recognised under the European Habitats Directive as priority habitat 9590* – Cedrus brevifolia forests. Protection concerns the entire forest system and the processes that ensure its continuity.
The LIFE-KEDROS project implemented restoration, regeneration support, seed conservation and fire management measures. The European Commission reports the restoration of 12 hectares of degraded habitat and the creation of eight hectares of new habitat. The project received the LIFE Nature Award in 2022.
Long-term conservation requires monitoring of mature trees, successful establishment of new generations and protection of genetic diversity.
