Το Euphorbia petiolata Banks & Sol.

Το Plants of the World Online του Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, το καταγράφει ως ιθαγενές στην Αλγερία, Κύπρο, Ιράν, Ιράκ, Λίβανο–Συρία, Πακιστάν, Παλαιστίνη, Τουρκμενιστάν και Τουρκία, ενώ η παρουσία του στην Αίγυπτο και το Σινά θεωρείται αμφίβολη.

Euphorbia petiolata Banks & Sol. – Species.

Το Plants of the World Online

Cystidospermum petiolatum (Banks & Sol.) Nasimova
Dematra petiolata (Banks & Sol.) J.Sojak
Tithymalus petiolatus (Banks & Sol.) Soják.

Euphorbia petiolata Banks & Sol. is an annual herb of the family Euphorbiaceae and one of the native species of the genus Euphorbia occurring in Cyprus. It is not endemic to the island, as its natural geographical range extends across parts of the southern and eastern Mediterranean and western Asia. The currently accepted scientific name was published in 1794.

In Cyprus it forms part of the indigenous flora and is included in modern records of the island's vascular plants as well as in the organized dynamic checklist of Biodiversity of Cyprus. Its occurrence on the island is also supported by botanical collections and published scientific records.

Description

Euphorbia petiolata is an annual herb possessing the characteristic milky latex found in most members of the genus Euphorbia. Its herbaceous stems bear the highly specialised inflorescence characteristic of spurges, known as a cyathium. Although resembling a single flower, the cyathium actually consists of greatly reduced male and female flowers enclosed within a specialised structure.

The leaves are simple and arranged along the stems, while the upper leaves participate in the characteristic arrangement surrounding the inflorescences. Following fertilisation, the plant produces the characteristic three-lobed capsule of the genus containing the seeds.

As with spurges generally, contact of the milky latex with the eyes and mucous membranes should be avoided, and the plant should not be consumed without specific reliable evidence concerning its safety.

Distribution

Globally, Euphorbia petiolata has a broad but clearly defined native distribution. Plants of the World Online records it as native to Algeria, Cyprus, Iran, Iraq, Lebanon–Syria, Pakistan, Palestine, Turkmenistan and Türkiye, while its presence in Egypt and Sinai is considered doubtful.

Cyprus therefore lies within the species' natural range, and its appropriate status on the island is native, non-endemic, rather than alien or introduced.

Occurrence in Cyprus

The occurrence of Euphorbia petiolata in Cyprus is well documented. A published supplementary contribution to the flora of Cyprus records the species from the northern outskirts of Agios Amvrosios, Kyrenia, in a cultivated field at approximately 150 m elevation, collected by G. N. Hadjikyriakou on 8 October 2010.

The species is also included in modern lists of the Cypriot genus Euphorbia. In the Biodiversity of Cyprus Organized Dynamic Checklist it is listed under the family Euphorbiaceae, genus Euphorbia, as taxon 648. Euphorbia petiolata Banks & Sol. – Species.

The photographs accompanying this article were taken at Geri, Nicosia District, by George Konstantinou on 11 September 2016, providing a field photographic record of the species in Cyprus.

Habitat and ecology

Euphorbia petiolata occurs in open, dry and often disturbed habitats. The published Cypriot record from Agios Amvrosios was made in a cultivated field, confirming its occurrence in human-influenced agricultural habitats.

As an annual species, it completes its life cycle within a single growing season. Its development, flowering and seed production are influenced by rainfall, temperature and local soil conditions, as is typical of many annual plants adapted to the dry environments of the eastern Mediterranean.

Taxonomy and synonyms

The accepted scientific name is Euphorbia petiolata Banks & Sol., first published in the second edition of The Natural History of Aleppo, volume 2, page 253, in 1794. Plants of the World Online currently accepts the species.

Its homotypic synonyms include:

Cystidospermum petiolatum (Banks & Sol.) Nasimova
Dematra petiolata (Banks & Sol.) J.Sojak
Tithymalus petiolatus (Banks & Sol.) Soják.

Kew currently recognises two accepted infraspecific varieties, Euphorbia petiolata var. petiolata and Euphorbia petiolata var. postii (Boiss.). The typical variety, var. petiolata, is recorded as native to Cyprus.

Uses

No sufficiently reliable evidence has been found for specific traditional, medicinal or edible uses of Euphorbia petiolata in Cyprus. Uses attributed to other members of the very large genus Euphorbia should not be transferred to this species without specific documentation.
