Phyla nodiflora
Σύμφωνα με το Plants of the World Online των Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, το Phyla nodiflora είναι ιθαγενές στην Κύπρο.
Phyla nodiflora (L.) Greene
Lippia nodiflora (L.) Michx.
Το είδος περιλαμβάνεται στη Flora of Cyprus του R.D. Meikle.
Το Phyla nodiflora περιλαμβάνεται στο Red Data Book of the Flora of Cyprus – Κόκκινο Βιβλίο της Χλωρίδας της Κύπρου.

Phyla nodiflora
Phyla nodiflora (L.) Greene is a low-growing, creeping perennial herb or subshrub belonging to the family Verbenaceae.
It has an exceptionally broad distribution throughout warmer regions of the world and in Cyprus is particularly associated with wet and seasonally wet habitats.
Documented English common names include Frog fruit, Sawtooth fogfruit and Turkey tangle.
Status in Cyprus – Native species
The biogeographical status of Phyla nodiflora requires care because of its extremely broad global distribution and the occurrence of different varieties.
According to Plants of the World Online, Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, Phyla nodiflora is native to Cyprus.
Kew also records the typical Phyla nodiflora var. nodiflora as native to Cyprus.
In contrast, Phyla nodiflora var. minor is native to tropical and subtropical America and is listed by Kew as introduced to Cyprus.
The species Phyla nodiflora as a whole should therefore not simply be described as alien to Cyprus.
Scientific name and taxonomy
The accepted scientific name is:
Phyla nodiflora (L.) Greene
The present combination was published by American botanist Edward Lee Greene in 1899 in Pittonia.
The (L.) indicates that the original name is based on a Linnaean description.
An important synonym is:
Lippia nodiflora (L.) Michx.
The species is included in R.D. Meikle's Flora of Cyprus.
Description
It is a perennial plant characterised by its low, creeping growth.
Its stems spread horizontally across the ground and can root at the nodes, allowing the plant to form dense low mats.
This growth form is particularly well adapted to open and periodically disturbed wet habitats.
Leaves
The leaves are opposite and somewhat variable in shape.
They are generally oblanceolate to obovate and narrow towards the base.
The upper part of the leaf margin is characteristically toothed, becoming more entire towards the base.
This feature is reflected in the common name Sawtooth fogfruit.
Flowers and inflorescences
The flowers are extremely small and grouped into distinctive dense, head-like or short cylindrical inflorescences.
Individual flowers may be white, whitish, pink or slightly violet.
The flower heads are borne on stalks above the low creeping foliage.
Creeping stems and vegetative spread
The creeping stems may root where their nodes contact suitable moist soil.
This enables the plant to spread vegetatively and form extensive low mats.
It also reproduces sexually through flowers and seeds.
Habitat in Cyprus
In Cyprus the species is strongly associated with wet and seasonally wet habitats.
Published scientific information specifically reports it from:
wet meadows, seasonal ponds and swamps.
These habitats depend upon standing water or seasonally high soil moisture.
Hydrological alteration, drainage, wetland destruction and changes in land use can therefore affect suitable habitat for the species.
Distribution in Cyprus
Published scientific research reports Phyla nodiflora from four localities in Cyprus.
These reported populations occurred at very low elevations of 0–50 metres.
Records are known from wetland areas including Akrotiri, while a published supplementary record also documents the species approximately 3 km west of Famagusta, near Gaidouras, on moist ground beside a pond at 25 m elevation.
Red Data Book of the Flora of Cyprus
Phyla nodiflora is included in the Red Data Book of the Flora of Cyprus.
Its national category is:
VU – Vulnerable
The Red Data Book treatment is cited as Papachristophorou (2007).
The category Vulnerable (VU) indicates that, under the criteria used for the national assessment, the species faces an elevated risk of extinction in the wild if the factors affecting its populations or habitats continue.
Important published information for Cyprus includes:
Red Data Book category: VU – Vulnerable
Number of known localities reported in the relevant scientific study: 4
Habitats: wet meadows, seasonal ponds and swamps
Elevation of reported localities: 0–50 m
Its restricted occurrence in specialised wet habitats makes the conservation of the wetlands supporting its populations particularly important.
Phyla nodiflora continues to be listed among the important Cyprus Red Data Book plants occurring on the Akrotiri Peninsula.
Phyla nodiflora at Achna Dam
Of particular relevance to this article is the occurrence of the species at Achna Dam.
The reservoir is an important artificial wetland in Cyprus. Its seasonally wet margins provide suitable habitats for specialised wetland plants.
Phyla nodiflora has been recorded at Achna Dam as one of the rare plants of the area included in the Red Data Book of the Flora of Cyprus.
The occurrence of a nationally Vulnerable (VU) plant adds to the botanical importance of this significant wetland.
Photographic record at Achna Dam
The photographs accompanying this article were taken at Achna Dam on 2 October 2016 by George Konstantinou.
They document the presence of this Red Data Book plant at an important wetland in eastern Cyprus.
Global distribution
Phyla nodiflora has an exceptionally wide distribution throughout tropical and subtropical regions.
Kew records native populations across large parts of the Americas, Africa, Asia, Australasia and the Mediterranean, including Cyprus.
The species or some of its varieties have also been introduced elsewhere.
This is an important reason why species-level and variety-level status must be carefully distinguished when determining whether a particular taxon is native or alien.
Global conservation status
The global conservation status should not be confused with its national conservation status in Cyprus.
Globally, Phyla nodiflora is assessed as:
LC – Least Concern.
In Cyprus, however, the Red Data Book of the Flora of Cyprus classifies it as VU – Vulnerable.
This distinction is important: a species may be widespread globally while simultaneously being rare and threatened at national level.
Ecological importance
Phyla nodiflora forms part of the low vegetation of wet and seasonally flooded habitats.
Its creeping stems cover exposed moist ground, while its small flowers can provide resources for insects.
Its conservation in Cyprus is therefore closely connected with the protection and appropriate management of the specialised wetland habitats on which it depends.
