Η Posidonia oceanica

The beautiful fossils presented here are attributed to Posidonia oceanica (L.) Delile, a marine flowering plant that still forms extensive underwater meadows throughout the Mediterranean and along the coasts of Cyprus. P. oceanica is also recorded as part of the modern flora of Cyprus.

Discovery at Geri

These fossils were found by George Konstantinou at Geri, among dumped soil of unknown origin. Geri therefore represents the place where the material was discovered, not necessarily the original geological locality of the fossils.

George Konstantinou collected several of the best-preserved specimens. When he later returned to search for additional material, the fossil-bearing dumped soil was no longer visible because tons of additional soil had been deposited over the site. The original material was therefore buried and could no longer be examined.

This circumstance is important when interpreting the fossils. The original locality from which the dumped soil had been excavated is unknown, as is its original stratigraphic horizon. Consequently, these specimens cannot reliably be assigned to a particular geological formation or given a precise geological age.

Posidonia oceanica

Posidonia oceanica is a seagrass endemic to the Mediterranean Sea. Despite its appearance, it is not an alga but a true flowering plant, possessing roots, rhizomes, leaves, flowers and fruits.

Its long, narrow leaves grow in shoots arising from rhizomes. Through the continuing accumulation of rhizomes, roots, leaf sheaths and sediment, Posidonia meadows can develop thick and complex organic structures known as matte. These deposits can preserve plant remains for thousands of years and provide important palaeoecological archives.

Fossil record

The genus Posidonia has a very long evolutionary history. Fossil representatives of the lineage are known from much earlier geological periods, while the modern Mediterranean P. oceanica is associated with the evolution of the genus in the Mediterranean following major palaeogeographical changes involving the ancient Tethys Sea.

An especially important comparison comes from Rhodes, Greece, where exceptionally preserved Posidonia oceanica remains have been documented in Late Pliocene deposits. Beds containing abundant fossil leaves were discovered together with rhizomes preserved in their original growth position. The associated fauna demonstrated that well-established P. oceanica meadows with ecological communities comparable to those of the modern Mediterranean already existed during the Pliocene.

This comparison, however, does not establish a Pliocene age for the material found at Geri. Because the specimens were recovered from dumped soil of unknown provenance, their age cannot be determined from their appearance alone.

Ecological importance

Today, Posidonia oceanica meadows are among the most important marine habitats of the Mediterranean. Their dense rhizome systems create structurally complex habitats supporting numerous marine organisms, while their long-lived mats also constitute important stores of organic carbon.

Posidonia oceanica meadows are well documented around Cyprus, where the Department of Fisheries and Marine Research recognises them as an important component of the island's marine ecosystems.
