Η καταγραφή δημοσιεύθηκε στην επιστημονική εργασία των Henk K. Mienis, Oz Rittner και George Konstantinou, με τίτλο “Additions to the List of the Inland Molluscs of Cyprus”, στο Triton, No. 26, November 2012, pp. 36–40.
Melanoides tuberculata (O. F. Müller, 1774).
Η εργασία “Additions to the List of the Inland Molluscs of Cyprus” των Henk K. Mienis, Oz Rittner και George Konstantinou πρόσθεσε 22 taxa — ή 23 με τον χωριστό υπολογισμό δύο μορφών — στον τότε βασικό κατάλογο των χερσαίων και υδρόβιων μαλακίων της Κύπρου.

Melanoides tuberculata (O. F. Müller, 1774) – Old shells from Geri, Nicosia – Cyprus
Melanoides tuberculata in Cyprus
Melanoides tuberculata (O. F. Müller, 1774) is an aquatic gastropod belonging to the family Thiaridae. It is a freshwater species with a wide distribution in warm regions of the Old World and has also become established in many other parts of the world.
Its occurrence in Cyprus is particularly interesting because old shell records are known from several parts of the island, while a scientific paper published in 2012 reported that no living populations were then known from Cyprus.
Discovery at Geri
In 2011, I found shells of Melanoides tuberculata near Geri in Nicosia District, in a temporary stream at a depth of approximately one metre.
The record was published in the scientific paper by Henk K. Mienis, Oz Rittner and George Konstantinou, entitled “Additions to the List of the Inland Molluscs of Cyprus”, in Triton, No. 26, November 2012, pp. 36–40.
The publication records the locality as Nicosia, near the village of Geri, in a temporary stream at a depth of one metre. Only empty shells were collected by G. Konstantinou in 2011.
The specimens were deposited in GFK, the private collection of George and Fani Konstantinou, Geri, Cyprus.
Earlier records from Cyprus
The same scientific paper records Melanoides tuberculata from two additional localities in Cyprus.
One concerns material from an excavation at Kissonerga, near the Skotinis stream, previously reported by Ridout-Sharpe. The second concerns material from Akrotiri West, collected at a depth of 46–60 cm.
Based on these records, Mienis, Rittner & Konstantinou reported in 2012 that the species lived in Cyprus in the past, but that no contemporary populations were then known from the island.
The shells from Geri
The shells I found near Geri came from a depth of approximately one metre in a temporary stream and consisted of empty shells.
The scientific publication records them as empty shells, without assigning them to a particular geological age.
They are therefore presented as old shells of the species, without a specific geological date. They provide documented evidence of the former presence of Melanoides tuberculata in Cyprus.
An older presence in Cyprus
Shells of Melanoides tuberculata have also been reported from deposits at Coral Bay, Paphos.
A published account describes M. tuberculata occurring together with Potamides conicus and Melanopsis praemorsa in a sand and silt layer exposed in a coastal section. The author discusses the possible age of the deposits while also noting the difficulties involved in dating them precisely.
This record provides additional evidence that the history of Melanoides tuberculata in Cyprus extends well beyond its modern history as an introduced species in many parts of the world.
Description
Melanoides tuberculata has a characteristic elongated, conical, high-spired shell with numerous whorls. Its surface bears spiral and transverse sculpture, while shell shape and ornamentation can vary considerably.
Scientific studies have demonstrated substantial shell-shape variation associated with both genetic and environmental factors. This variability is particularly relevant when interpreting old or fossil series of the species.
Habitat and ecology
The species lives primarily in fresh water, particularly shallow, slow-flowing waters with soft mud or sand substrates. It is a warm-water species capable of tolerating a considerable range of environmental conditions.
It feeds mainly on organic material, algae and microorganisms associated with the substrate.
Reproduction
The reproductive biology of Melanoides tuberculata is particularly interesting. Many populations consist predominantly of females reproducing parthenogenetically, although males occur in some populations and sexual reproduction can also take place.
This reproductive strategy contributes to the species' ability to establish populations rapidly when introduced into suitable aquatic environments.
Scientific name
The accepted scientific name is:
Melanoides tuberculata (O. F. Müller, 1774).
The form Melanoides tuberculatus found in some older sources is currently referred to the accepted Melanoides tuberculata.
The 2012 scientific record
The Geri record formed part of a wider scientific study of the terrestrial and aquatic molluscs of Cyprus.
The paper “Additions to the List of the Inland Molluscs of Cyprus” by Henk K. Mienis, Oz Rittner and George Konstantinou added 22 taxa — or 23 when two separately treated forms are counted — to the basic checklist of inland terrestrial and freshwater molluscs of Cyprus available at that time.
The Melanoides tuberculata record from Geri is particularly well documented, with the year, locality, habitat, depth, collector and collection all recorded in the publication.
