Cetacea indet.

Probable fossil caudal vertebra of a cetacean from Arediou – Cyprus

Fossil cetacean vertebra from Arediou

The fossil shown in the photographs is a cetacean (Cetacea) vertebra that I found at Arediou in Nicosia District, during field research together with my wife, Fani Konstantinou.

In my original post I described it as a “Whale tail vertebra”. Based on the available evidence, however, it is scientifically safer not to assign it to a “whale” or to any particular group or species of cetacean.

The safest identification is:

Cetacea indet. – probable caudal vertebra of a cetacean.

Probable caudal vertebra

The vertebral column of cetaceans changes considerably in morphology from the neck to the end of the tail.

In modern studies of cetacean anatomy, the first caudal vertebra is generally defined as the first vertebra bearing an articular facet for a haemal arch or chevron on the ventral aspect of the centrum. Farther along the tail, vertebral morphology changes further, with the vertebrae associated with the fluke becoming characteristically dorsoventrally flattened.

The morphology of this fossil is consistent with the possibility that it comes from the caudal region of the vertebral column. However, without direct comparative anatomical examination and detailed measurements of the specimen, I prefer to retain the identification “probable caudal vertebra.”

Why the species cannot be identified

An isolated cetacean vertebra does not normally provide sufficient diagnostic characters on its own for reliable identification to species level.

There is considerable variation in vertebral shape, proportions and number among living cetaceans. In addition, vertebral morphology changes substantially according to the position of each vertebra along the vertebral column.

It would therefore be inappropriate to identify this fossil as belonging to a sperm whale, baleen whale, dolphin or any other particular cetacean solely from this specimen.

Discovery at Arediou

I found this fossil together with my wife, Fani Konstantinou, at Arediou in Nicosia District.

This information represents my personal field record associated with the specimen.

Precise coordinates are not provided because confirmed coordinates of the actual discovery point are not available here. Coordinates for Arediou village itself should not be presented as coordinates of the fossil locality.

A cetacean in the modern interior of Cyprus

The presence of a fossil marine mammal bone in the modern interior of Cyprus is readily explained by the island's geological history.

Much of the sedimentary succession of central Cyprus formed under marine conditions. These areas were subsequently uplifted, and ancient marine deposits are now exposed on land.

This explains why fossils of marine organisms can today be found in Nicosia District at considerable distances from the modern coastline.

Age of the fossil

I do not assign a specific geological age to this specimen based solely on the shape of the vertebra or the fact that it was discovered at Arediou.

Reliable geological dating requires knowledge of the precise locality and, most importantly, the stratigraphic horizon from which the specimen originated.

Until the fossil can be associated with a particular geological unit, it should not arbitrarily be described as Miocene, Pliocene or Pleistocene.

What can safely be concluded

Based on the available evidence, the specimen can be recorded as:

Fossil cetacean vertebra – Cetacea indet.

and, on morphological grounds:

probable caudal vertebra.

Its more precise position within the vertebral column and the genus or species of the animal to which it belonged remain undetermined.
