TEXT AND PHOTOS: GEORGE KONSTANTINOU – AGIOS IOANNIS MALOUNTAS, NICOSIA DISTRICT, CYPRUS.

The fossil presented here was found by George Konstantinou and Fani Konstantinou in the area of Agios Ioannis Malountas, Nicosia District. It belongs to the marine gastropod Typhinellus labiatus (De Cristofori & Jan, 1832), a species of the family Muricidae. The name is currently accepted.

Description

Typhinellus labiatus belongs to the subfamily Typhinae, a distinctive group within the Muricidae. Its shell is relatively small and elongated, with strong sculpture, axial varices and characteristic tubular processes. These morphological features are particularly important in distinguishing members of the Typhinae.

Muricid shells display considerable morphological diversity, but members of the Typhinae are especially notable for their unusual tubular structures. A modern taxonomic revision of the subfamily, incorporating molecular data, supports the placement of T. labiatus within Typhinellus.

Taxonomy and synonyms

The species was described in 1832 by De Cristofori & Jan. Several historical names have been applied to it, including Murex syphonellus Bellardi & Michelotti, 1840, Typhis sowerbii Broderip, 1833 and Typhis sowerbyi Broderip, 1833. Its currently accepted name is Typhinellus labiatus (De Cristofori & Jan, 1832).

The genus Typhinellus was established by Jousseaume in 1880. Thus, 1880 refers to the establishment of the genus rather than the description of the species itself, which dates from 1832.

Distribution and present occurrence

Typhinellus labiatus is not extinct. It survives today and is the Mediterranean representative of the genus Typhinellus. It occurs throughout the Mediterranean Sea and along adjacent eastern Atlantic coasts, including Morocco and southern Spain and extending towards western Africa.

Importantly for Cyprus, Typhinellus labiatus is included in the modern checklist of marine shells of Cyprus, confirming that the species is also part of the island's present-day marine fauna.

Fossil record

The species has a substantial fossil record in Neogene and Quaternary deposits of Europe and the Mediterranean.

It is recorded from the Middle Miocene, with documented specimens also known from the Upper Miocene of northwestern France. It subsequently occurs in Lower and Upper Pliocene deposits of the central Mediterranean and in Lower Pleistocene deposits of Italy.

T. labiatus is therefore a good example of a marine gastropod with a long history: it was already present during the Neogene and has survived to the present day in the Mediterranean.

The fossil from Agios Ioannis Malountas

This fossil was found at Agios Ioannis Malountas by George Konstantinou and Fani Konstantinou.

The occurrence of Typhinellus labiatus indicates a marine depositional environment. However, because the species has a long geological range extending from the Neogene to the present, the species alone cannot provide a precise age for this particular specimen. Reliable dating requires information about the stratigraphic horizon from which it originated.

The specimen is especially interesting because the same species occurring as a fossil in inland Nicosia District continues to form part of the living marine fauna of Cyprus today.
