Because the next total eclipse will occur in 2088, and we probably will not live to see it.
The impressive natural phenomenon of the total solar eclipse, which occurred yesterday, 21 August, was visible across North America, Brazil, the Atlantic Ocean, Great Britain, Spain and part of West Africa, but was naturally not visible from Cyprus.
Nevertheless, George Konstantinou, President of the Association for the Protection of the Natural Heritage and Biodiversity of Cyprus, managed to enjoy this unique phenomenon through a live camera installed in Oregon. He captured 12 frames showing daylight turning into darkness and shared them with CITY, which in turn is sharing them with you.
Η ολική έκλειψη Ηλίου της 21ης Αυγούστου 2017 – The Total Solar Eclipse of August 21, 2017

The Total Solar Eclipse of August 21, 2017
Text by George Konstantinou
The impressive natural phenomenon of a total solar eclipse occurred on August 21, 2017, attracting the interest of millions of people throughout the world.
The eclipse was total only within a relatively narrow path that crossed the United States of America from west to east. The Moon’s shadow first reached the coast of Oregon and continued through several states until it reached South Carolina and the Atlantic Ocean.
Across the rest of North America, as well as parts of South America, western Europe and western Africa, the phenomenon was visible as a partial eclipse. In Great Britain and parts of Spain, the solar disc was only partially covered shortly before sunset.
The eclipse was not visible from Cyprus because the island was situated outside the area covered by the Moon’s penumbra.
How a solar eclipse occurs
A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between Earth and the Sun and its shadow falls upon part of Earth’s surface.
During a total eclipse, the Moon completely covers the Sun’s bright disc. This is possible because, although the Sun is approximately 400 times larger than the Moon, it is also about 400 times farther away from Earth. Therefore, when the alignment is suitable, the two celestial bodies appear almost equal in size in the sky.
The darkest central part of the Moon’s shadow is known as the umbra. Only observers situated within its narrow path experience a total eclipse. Across the much larger area covered by the penumbra, the Moon covers only part of the Sun, and the phenomenon is seen as a partial eclipse.
The path of totality
The path of totality on August 21, 2017, crossed the continental United States from Oregon to South Carolina. It passed through parts of 14 states and was approximately 110 kilometres wide.
Outside this narrow path, the eclipse was only partial. NASA states that a partial eclipse was visible across the entire North American continent and in parts of South America, Africa and Europe.
During totality, daylight temporarily changed into twilight. The temperature dropped, bright stars and planets appeared, and the solar corona—the Sun’s outer atmosphere—became visible.
Animal behaviour
The sudden reduction in light and temperature can cause temporary changes in animal behaviour. Birds may stop singing or move towards their roosting sites, while nocturnal insects may begin to become active.
These changes last only a few minutes. As the Sun reappears, animals usually return to their normal daytime activity.
Safe observation
Observing a solar eclipse always requires specially certified solar-viewing glasses. Ordinary sunglasses, photographic film, X-ray film and improvised filters do not protect the eyes from dangerous solar radiation.
The Sun must never be observed directly through a telescope, binoculars or a camera without a special solar filter fitted in front of the objective lens. Concentrated sunlight can cause severe and permanent damage to the eyes.
Only within the path of totality, and during the few minutes when the Sun is completely covered, may it be viewed without special glasses. As soon as any bright part of the Sun reappears, eye protection must immediately be used again.
A rare and unforgettable phenomenon
Total solar eclipses occur somewhere on Earth approximately once every 18 months. However, because the path of totality is very narrow and crosses a different region each time, observing a total eclipse from the same location is exceptionally rare.
The eclipse of August 21, 2017, became known as the “Great American Eclipse” because its path of totality crossed the United States from one coast to the other.
Although the phenomenon was not visible from Cyprus, it provided an excellent opportunity to inform the public about the Sun, the Moon, Earth and the movements of celestial bodies.
