Cypriot mouse - M-us cypriacus - Κυπριακός Ποντίκός
long-eared hedgehog - Cyprus hedgehog - Hemiechinus auritus dorotheae - Σκαντζόχοιρος
The Lesser White-toothed Shrew (Crocidura suaveolens cypria) - Μυγαλή

The 31 Mammal Species of Cyprus (Web TV) – By George Konstantinou – Politis Newspaper, 20 May 2018
GEORGE KONSTANTINOU, 20 May 2018
Text, photographs and video by George Konstantinou
Mammals constitute an important part of our country’s remarkable biodiversity. Cyprus is home to 31 different mammal species, 19 of which are bats. Bats belong to the order Chiroptera and are divided into two categories: Microchiroptera and Megachiroptera. For most people, these animals remain unknown because they emerge only at night, while during the day they hide again in dark places. Consequently, very few people have the opportunity to see them at close range.
Bats are the only mammals in the world capable of true flight, and they can perform aerial manoeuvres even more skilfully than birds. Instead of feathers, they possess skin membranes that enable them to fly almost completely silently. They are nocturnal animals and become active as soon as darkness falls, when they begin searching for food.
Eighteen of the 19 bat species found in Cyprus belong to the microbats and feed exclusively on insects. Only one belongs to the megabats: our well-known Egyptian fruit bat. The Egyptian fruit bat, or “night raven”, with the scientific name Rousettus aegyptiacus, is a fruit bat belonging to the Megachiroptera and feeds exclusively on nectar and overripe fruit.
It is the largest bat species found in Cyprus, with a wingspan of up to 60 centimetres. Cyprus is the only European country that hosts this bat species. It is also found in several African countries, the Middle East, Pakistan and India. Unfortunately, this animal is threatened with disappearance from our country.
It is not an aggressive animal
The Cyprus fox belongs to the red fox species, Vulpes vulpes, and is one of the 47 subspecies found on our planet. It is the largest predatory animal in Cyprus and is renowned for its cunning and intelligence, hence the expression “as cunning as a fox”.
When domesticated from an early age, its behaviour is no different from that of a friendly dog. It is not an aggressive animal and never attacks humans. Although foxes are classified as carnivorous animals, they are actually omnivores, since they also feed on various plant species and fruits.
The fox has been present on our island for more than six to eight thousand years and was among the animals hunted by the first Neolithic people who settled in Cyprus. It is very likely that Neolithic people brought the fox to the island from neighbouring countries approximately six thousand years ago for breeding purposes. Some animals may subsequently have escaped and returned to a wild state, as also happened with the Cyprus mouflon.
The Cyprus mouflon is the largest terrestrial mammal in our country. The Cyprus mouflon, with the scientific name Ovis gmelini ophion—Cyprian Wild Sheep or Cyprus Mouflon—is also endemic to Cyprus, meaning that it is found in Cyprus and nowhere else in the world.
The geographical isolation of the animal over thousands of years resulted in its morphological differentiation and evolution into a distinct species or subspecies, as has happened with many organisms found in our country.
The mouflon has a history of approximately six to eight thousand years in Cyprus, as it was brought to the island by Neolithic people. As is known, the first humans arrived on the island approximately 12,000 years ago. The mouflon population is estimated to exceed 3,000 animals.
Mediterranean monk seal
The Mediterranean monk seal, Monachus monachus, is Europe’s and the planet’s number one threatened marine mammal and is believed to be the rarest seal species in the world.
Seeing a seal in Cypriot waters is quite rare, although fortunately, during the last two years, reports from people who have seen seals have become increasingly frequent, particularly in Limassol and the Karpasia Peninsula. There is also reliable information indicating that they breed in secluded caves in Cyprus.
The Mediterranean monk seal belongs to the family Phocidae. According to studies conducted in 2016, fewer than 700 individuals were estimated to survive in three or four isolated subpopulations in the Mediterranean region—particularly in the Aegean Sea—as well as in the Madeira Archipelago and the Cabo Blanco region of the north-eastern Atlantic Ocean.
The hare, with the scientific name European Hare, Lepus europaeus, is one of the most relentlessly persecuted mammals in Cyprus. Unfortunately, it is classified as one of the principal game species of Cyprus and is hunted mercilessly and obsessively by forty thousand hunters.
It is found throughout the island, is a herbivorous animal and constitutes an endemic subspecies of Cyprus.
The most hated mammal in Cyprus
The hedgehog, with the scientific name Long-eared Hedgehog, Hemiechinus auritus dorotheae, is also an endemic subspecies of Cyprus. It is found mainly in lowland areas. It is a carnivorous animal and feeds primarily on lizards, snails and insects.
The Lesser White-toothed Shrew, Crocidura suaveolens cypria, is a small carnivorous rodent that feeds on insects, worms and snails.
The Etruscan shrew, Suncus etruscus, is a rare, small carnivorous rodent that feeds on insects and is the smallest mammal on the planet.
The Cyprus Spiny Mouse, Acomys nesiotes, is a rare rodent that closely resembles a rat and feeds on seeds, insects and snails. It is called a spiny mouse because the hairs on its back are stiff and resemble spines.
The Cypriot mouse, Mus cypriacus, is endemic to Cyprus and was discovered for the first time in 2004. It was the first new mammal to be discovered in Europe in 100 years. It closely resembles the house mouse and is found in both lowland and mountainous areas.
The house mouse, Mus musculus domesticus, is the familiar harmful rodent found almost everywhere, particularly inside houses, warehouses and farms. It causes extensive damage and is systematically controlled by humans.
The black rat, Rattus rattus, and the brown rat, Rattus norvegicus, are the most hated mammals in Cyprus because they cause incalculable damage to humans and are therefore systematically controlled. Snakes, foxes and birds of prey play an important role in controlling the populations of harmful rodents.
In addition to the 31 mammals I have mentioned, various marine mammal species, including dolphins and whales, are occasionally encountered in the seas around Cyprus.
Some of Cyprus’s mammals, such as hedgehogs and foxes, face considerable pressure on the roads. Dozens of these animals are killed every day in collisions with vehicles, while others are unfortunately deliberately struck by irresponsible drivers simply for amusement.
