Εάν μας δαγκώσει κάποιο φίδι και δεν ξέρουμε αν είναι δηλητηριώδη, μπορούμε να κοιτάξουμε το σημείο του δαγκώματος, εάν το φίδι είναι μη δηλητηριώδες στο μέρος του δαγκώματος θα αφήσει μια κοκκινίλα σε σχήμα ρολογιού και το μόνο που πρέπει να κάνουμε είναι να απολυμάνουμε το μέρος αυτό. Εάν το φίδι που μας δάγκωσε είναι δηλητηριώδες, δηλαδή φίνα, θα δούμε στο σημείο του δαγκώματος μία ή δύο μικρές τρύπες όπως στην φωτογραφία.

Το συγκεκριμένο περιστατικό συνέβητε χθες 21/8/2021 σε ορεινή περιοχή. Ο ηλικιωμένος έκοβε σύκα όπου και δέχτηκε το αστραπιαίο δάγκωμα τις φίνας που προφανώς την πλησίασε πολύ ή την πάτησε. Το συμβάν έγινε κατά τις 5 το απόγευμα και μέχρι η ώρα 12 την νύχτα που μου έστειλε αυτή την φωτογραφία δεν είχε καθόλου πόνο ή πρήξιμο. Του εξήγησα ότι είναι από τους τυχερούς και ότι αν μετά από 7 ώρες δεν είχε συμπτώματα δεν πρόκειται να πάθει τίποτα και ότι το δάγκωμα που δέχτηκε είναι το λεγόμενο ξηρό δάγκωμα. Ξηρό δάγκωμα ονομάζετε το δάγκωμα όπου το φίδι δαγκώνει το θύμα του αλλά δεν διοχετεύει δηλητήριο. Απλά φάνηκε πολύ τυχερός και γλύτωσε από αρκετή ταλαιπωρία.

Blunt-nosed Viper Bite

If we are bitten by a snake and do not know whether it is venomous, we can examine the site of the bite. If the snake is non-venomous, it will leave a watch-shaped red mark at the bite site, and the only thing we need to do is disinfect the area.

If the snake that bit us is venomous—that is, the blunt-nosed viper, the only snake in Cyprus that bites in this way—we will see one or two small puncture marks at the bite site, as shown in the photograph.

This particular incident occurred yesterday, 21 August 2021, in a mountainous area. An elderly man was picking figs when he received the lightning-fast bite of the blunt-nosed viper, which he had apparently approached too closely or accidentally stepped on.

The incident occurred at approximately five o’clock in the afternoon. By midnight, when he sent me this photograph, he had experienced no pain or swelling.

I explained to him that he was one of the fortunate ones and that, since he had developed no symptoms after seven hours, he was not going to suffer any effects. The bite he had received was what is known as a dry bite.

A dry bite is a bite in which the snake bites its victim but does not inject venom. He was clearly very fortunate and escaped considerable suffering.
