Ο Γιώργος Κωνσταντίνου παρουσίασε στην εκπομπή «Ενημέρωση» του ALPHA TV τη νέα για την Κύπρο πεταλούδα Papilio demoleus Linnaeus, 1758, γνωστή ως Lime Butterfly ή Lemon Butterfly. Το είδος καταγράφηκε για πρώτη φορά στην Κύπρο το φθινόπωρο του 2021, σηματοδοτώντας την άφιξη μιας ακόμη πεταλούδας στην κυπριακή πανίδα.
Οι παρατηρήσεις που ακολούθησαν επιβεβαίωσαν ότι η πεταλούδα αναπαράχθηκε και κατάφερε να επιβιώσει τον χειμώνα του 2021–2022. Οι προνύμφες της τρέφονται κυρίως με φύλλα εσπεριδοειδών, ενώ η γρήγορη εξάπλωσή της σε διάφορες περιοχές του νησιού δημιούργησε επιστημονικό ενδιαφέρον σχετικά με την πιθανή μόνιμη εγκατάστασή της.
Κατά την παρουσίαση έγινε αναφορά στην ανακάλυψη, στην αναγνώριση και στον βιολογικό κύκλο του είδους, καθώς και στη σημασία της συστηματικής καταγραφής νέων ειδών για τη μελέτη των αλλαγών στη βιοποικιλότητα της Κύπρου.
George Konstantinou appeared on ALPHA TV’s “Enimerosi” programme to present Papilio demoleus Linnaeus, 1758, a butterfly newly recorded in Cyprus and commonly known as the Lime Butterfly or Lemon Butterfly. The species was first recorded on the island in autumn 2021, marking the arrival of another butterfly in the Cypriot fauna.
Subsequent observations confirmed that the butterfly had bred and successfully survived the winter of 2021–2022. Its larvae feed mainly on the leaves of citrus trees, while its rapid spread to different parts of the island generated scientific interest regarding its possible permanent establishment.
The presentation discussed the discovery, identification and life cycle of the species, as well as the importance of systematically recording new arrivals in order to study changes in the biodiversity of Cyprus.
