Papilio demoleus demoleus Linnaeus, 1758

Lime butterfly or Lemon butterfly – Papilio demoleus Linnaeus, 1758 – Cyprus

Text: George Konstantinou

A newly arrived butterfly now established in Cyprus

Papilio demoleus is a large and striking butterfly belonging to the family Papilionidae. It is known as the Lime butterfly, Lemon butterfly, Lime Swallowtail and Chequered Swallowtail. These names are associated with the citrus plants used by its larvae as host plants.

Although it belongs to the butterflies commonly known as swallowtails, Papilio demoleus lacks the long hindwing tails characteristic of many other species of the genus Papilio.

The species does not belong to the historically native fauna of Cyprus. It reached the island in 2021, bred on citrus plants, survived the winter and spread rapidly. Scientific monitoring conducted from 2021 to 2024 now provides strong evidence that it has become successfully established in Cyprus.

Scientific name and taxonomy

The species was described by Carl Linnaeus in 1758 in the tenth edition of Systema Naturae. Its original and current name is Papilio demoleus, so the author’s name and year are not placed in parentheses: Papilio demoleus Linnaeus, 1758.

The genus Papilio is the type genus of the family Papilionidae. The Latin word papilio means butterfly. The specific epithet demoleus derives from the personal name Demoleon, which occurs in classical mythology and literary tradition.

The subspecies established in Cyprus

Papilio demoleus includes a number of geographically differentiated subspecies. The identity of the Cyprus population was not determined solely from external morphological features. Molecular analysis confirmed that the individuals found in Cyprus belong to the nominate subspecies:

Papilio demoleus demoleus Linnaeus, 1758

The same nominate subspecies had previously been confirmed through molecular methods in populations from Mediterranean Syria. This result supported the conclusion that its arrival in Cyprus represented a continuation of the species’ natural westward expansion from the Middle East and the eastern Mediterranean coasts, rather than an independent human-assisted introduction.

Description of the adult

Papilio demoleus is a medium-sized to large butterfly, with a wingspan generally ranging from approximately 80 to 100 millimetres. The wings have a black ground colour covered by numerous irregular yellow or yellowish spots and bands, producing a strongly chequered pattern.

The hindwings bear a broad yellowish band and blue and reddish markings near the rear margin. Unlike many other members of the family Papilionidae, the hindwings do not possess prominent tails.

The undersides of the wings are paler but retain the characteristic black, yellow, blue and reddish pattern. The sexes are quite similar, although females are generally slightly larger and have a more rounded abdomen.

Flight and behaviour

The butterfly has a rapid, powerful and often irregular flight. It is capable of travelling considerable distances, a characteristic that has contributed to its extensive geographical expansion. Adults frequently visit flowering plants, gardens, parks, agricultural areas and citrus plantations.

Males may visit damp ground and mud to obtain salts and other minerals, a behaviour known as mud-puddling. Both sexes feed on nectar from a variety of flowers.

In urban and suburban areas of Cyprus, adults can be found around gardens containing lemon, orange, mandarin and other plants of the family Rutaceae.

Egg and larva

The female usually lays its eggs singly on young leaves and tender shoots of the host plants. The eggs are almost spherical and initially pale yellow or cream, becoming darker before hatching.

Young larvae are black or dark brown with white markings. Their appearance resembles bird droppings, providing effective camouflage against potential predators. As they develop, they become green with black, white and brown transverse bands.

Like other larvae of the family Papilionidae, they possess a forked, reversible organ behind the head known as an osmeterium. When disturbed, they extend it and release strongly scented chemical substances that deter ants, small predators and some parasitoids.

Pupa and completion of the life cycle

After completing its growth, the larva normally leaves its feeding site and searches for a suitable stable surface. It transforms into a pupa, attached at the rear and supported in an upright position by a silken girdle around its body.

The pupa may be green or brown, depending on the environment in which it forms. It consequently blends visually with green stems, dry twigs or other surrounding surfaces.

Under warm conditions, the complete life cycle can be completed rapidly, allowing several generations to develop during the same year. Under unfavourable seasonal conditions, the pupal stage may be prolonged. This ability has contributed to the species’ survival and establishment in regions with differing climatic conditions.

Host plants and association with citrus

The larvae feed mainly on plants belonging to the family Rutaceae. Important hosts include various species of the genus Citrus, such as lemon, orange, mandarin and lime, as well as related cultivated or wild plants.

Breeding in Cyprus was confirmed on three citrus species at different urban locations. Records of eggs, larvae, pupae and adults demonstrated that the species was not merely an occasional visitor but was successfully completing its life cycle on the island.

Young larvae produce small, irregular feeding marks on the leaves, while larger larvae can consume a substantial part of the leaf surface. The potential effect is greater on young saplings and nursery plants, whereas mature, healthy trees can generally withstand limited feeding.

Global distribution

Papilio demoleus is one of the most widely distributed butterflies in the family Papilionidae. Its natural and expanded range includes much of southern and south-eastern Asia, the Indian subcontinent, the Middle East and parts of Australasia.

During recent decades, it has expanded its distribution dramatically. It spread into the western Palaearctic and along the eastern Mediterranean coasts, while other populations appeared on islands in the Indian Ocean and in the Caribbean. Its strong flight, adaptability and the widespread cultivation of citrus facilitate its dispersal.

The route towards Cyprus

The species’ expansion towards Cyprus formed part of a wider westward movement. Populations had spread from the Gulf region into Syria and south-eastern Türkiye and subsequently along the Mediterranean coasts of Türkiye, Syria and Lebanon.

Its arrival in Cyprus had been predicted because of its continuing geographical expansion and strong flight. The species was first recorded on the island in August 2021. The first scientific publication documenting its presence in Cyprus appeared in the same year.

Its arrival was considered the result of natural dispersal from the eastern mainland coasts rather than transportation on plants or by another human-assisted means. Molecular matching of the Cyprus population with the nominate subspecies from Mediterranean Syria strongly supported this interpretation.

Breeding in Cyprus during 2021

Soon after the initial arrival, eggs and larvae were discovered on citrus plants in urban areas. Breeding was confirmed on three Citrus species, while the observations indicated that two generations were completed during late summer and autumn 2021.

These records were particularly important because they demonstrated that the first individuals had not simply remained on the island but had found suitable host plants and produced offspring. The crucial question remained whether the species would be capable of surviving the Cyprus winter.

Survival of the 2021–2022 winter

The winter of 2021–2022 was unusually cold for the eastern Mediterranean. Despite the initial uncertainty, new adult observations in April 2022 and the appearance of a new generation in June confirmed that Papilio demoleus had overwintered successfully in Cyprus.

Successful overwintering was an essential requirement for permanent establishment. It demonstrated that at least part of the population could complete its annual cycle under the island’s climatic conditions.

Expansion during 2022

The systematic collection and verification of observations submitted by citizens, naturalists and members of the Cyprus Butterfly Study Group revealed rapid expansion during 2022. In only one year, confirmed reports covered approximately 11% of the area of Cyprus.

The considerable distances separating the main concentration of records in central and eastern Cyprus from observations in coastal areas indicated that its true distribution was probably much greater than the area already mapped.

Successive generations, breeding and presence in new areas were recorded. By 2023, these data had already led to the conclusion that establishment was highly probable, although multi-year monitoring was required for firm confirmation.

Monitoring during 2021–2024 and confirmation of establishment

The most recent scientific study, published in 2025, evaluated the results of monitoring conducted from 2021 to 2024. A total of 783 observations submitted by 248 observers provided a much stronger picture of the species’ spread, breeding and seasonal occurrence in Cyprus.

Its continuous presence for four consecutive years, successful overwintering, production of multiple generations and geographical spread across a substantial part of the island now support the successful establishment of Papilio demoleus in Cyprus. It should therefore no longer be presented merely as an occasional or possibly established species. It is a non-native species with an established breeding population.

The importance of community science

The documentation of the spread of Papilio demoleus is a characteristic example of the value of community science. Photographs and reports submitted by numerous observers, when accompanied by a date, location and scientific verification, can provide data that would be extremely difficult for a small research team to collect alone.

Extensive participation made it possible to monitor the butterfly across almost the whole of Cyprus, record new areas of occurrence and recognize the chronological sequence of its generations. It also demonstrated the considerable value of photographic archives and observations made by Cypriot naturalists.

A non-native species and its potential effects

Papilio demoleus is classified as a non-native species in Cyprus. In several parts of the world, it is regarded as a potential pest of citrus because its larvae consume citrus leaves.

Its use of cultivated citrus has been confirmed in Cyprus, although this does not automatically mean that it causes serious economic damage. Population density, the frequency of infestations and possible effects on nurseries or commercial orchards require continued monitoring.

Insecticides should not be used indiscriminately when a larva is discovered. Such treatments can kill large numbers of native pollinators and beneficial insects. On small trees and in private gardens, the manual removal of a limited number of larvae is a more targeted option when protection of the plant is genuinely necessary.

Natural enemies and ecological adaptation

The eggs, larvae and pupae may serve as prey or hosts for birds, spiders, predatory insects, parasitoid wasps and other organisms. Over time, local natural enemies may incorporate the newly established butterfly into Cyprus food webs.

Its population should be monitored both for its possible effects on citrus and for the relationships it develops with native fauna. The establishment of a non-native species is a dynamic ecological process, and its long-term consequences cannot be evaluated solely from the first few years of its presence.

Scientific papers concerning Cyprus

The arrival, breeding, overwintering and establishment of Papilio demoleus in Cyprus were documented gradually through a series of scientific publications:

1. First appearance in Cyprus – 2021

John, E., Bağlar, H., Başbay, O. & Salimeh, M. (2021). “First appearance in Cyprus of Papilio demoleus Linnaeus, 1758 (Lepidoptera: Papilionidae), as it continues its predicted westward spread in the Palaearctic region”. Entomologist’s Gazette 72(4): 257–264.

The paper documented the species’ first appearance in Cyprus in August 2021 as part of its continuing westward expansion.

2. Subspecies identification and confirmation of breeding – 2022

John, E., Bağlar, H., Başbay, O., Konstantinou, G., Salimeh, M. & Wiemers, M. (2022). “Confirmation of the presence of nominotypical Papilio demoleus demoleus Linnaeus, 1758 (Lepidoptera: Papilionidae) in Cyprus, with additional notes on breeding and potential colonization”. Entomologist’s Gazette 73(2): 117–128. DOI: 10.31184/G00138894.732.1846.

Molecular analysis confirmed the nominate subspecies P. d. demoleus, while breeding on three citrus species and the production of two generations during 2021 were recorded.

3. Successful overwintering – 2022

John, E., Bağlar, H., Konstantinou, G., Başbay, O. & Salimeh, M. (2022). “Early observations confirm overwintering success of Papilio demoleus Linnaeus, 1758 (Lepidoptera: Papilionidae) in 2021/2022, enhancing potential for establishment in Cyprus”. Entomologist’s Gazette 73: 150–154.

Spring observations and the appearance of a new generation confirmed that the species had survived the winter of 2021–2022.

4. Expansion documented through community-science data – 2023
