All about Cyprus - Όλα για την Κύπρο
Further striking evidence demonstrates once again that, millions of years ago, our small island lay beneath the sea. The nine-year-old grandson of George Konstantinou, a knowledgeable fossil enthusiast and naturalist, discovered a fossilised shark tooth at Tseri.
Today, young George discovered on a hill in the Tseri area a fossilised white shark tooth, a rare find for Cyprus. His grandfather, George Konstantinou, wanted to share his happiness with his online friends.
“The incredible joy of my George when he found a fossilised white shark tooth, millions of years old and rare in Cyprus, on a hill at Tseri today, 26 February 2023.”
It is worth noting that George Konstantinou is a knowledgeable fossil enthusiast and possesses an extensive collection. As he told us, the tooth belonged to a shark known as the Shortfin Mako Shark.
The young boy was thrilled. As George Konstantinou explained, however, his grandson has already begun observing and discovering important evidence because it is in his genes.
It should also be noted that Cyprus once lay beneath the sea. It represents a unique, fully preserved and complete section of oceanic crust that now lies above sea level.
It is said that Cyprus emerged from the sea twice. The Troodos region first emerged approximately 90 million years ago. By comparison, humans first appeared in Cyprus only around 12,000 years ago.
Seventy million years ago, the two tectonic plates along whose boundary Cyprus is situated—the African and Eurasian plates—began moving away from each other, creating gaps between them. By 25 million years ago, the land had been covered by the sea. Only around 12 million years ago did the earliest island reappear, consisting mainly of the Troodos region, together with a second neighbouring island formed by the Pentadaktylos mountain range.
