Περιγραφή και ονομασία

Το Armadillo konstantinoui είναι χερσαίο ισόποδο της οικογένειας Armadillidae, γνωστό από διάφορες περιοχές της Κύπρου. Περιγράφηκε ως νέο είδος το 2023, μαζί με το επίσης κυπριακό Armadillo karametae. Η μελέτη περιέγραψε εκ νέου και το συγγενικό Armadillo officinalis.

Το είδος ονομάστηκε προς τιμήν του Γιώργου Κωνσταντίνου, ο οποίος, μαζί με τη σύζυγό του Φανή, έχει συμβάλει σημαντικά στη γνώση της βιοποικιλότητας της Κύπρου και προσέφερε πολύτιμη καθοδήγηση στους ερευνητές κατά τις εργασίες πεδίου.

Description and naming

Armadillo konstantinoui is a terrestrial isopod of the family Armadillidae, known from several localities across Cyprus. It was formally described as a new species in 2023, together with the Cypriot species Armadillo karametae. The related Armadillo officinalis was also redescribed in the same study.

The species was named in honour of Giorgos Konstantinou, who, together with his wife Fani, has contributed significantly to our knowledge of Cyprus biodiversity and provided the researchers with valuable guidance during their fieldwork.

Abstract

The present work aims to morphologically characterize the species of Armadillo from Cyprus. Moreover, two new species of the genus are described, A. konstantinoui sp. nov. from several places along the island, and A. karametae sp. nov. from Pafos region. The circum-Mediterranean species A. officinalis is also redescribed.
