Η σύγχρονη Flora of Cyprus – a dynamic checklist και τα Plants of the World Online των Βασιλικών Βοτανικών Κήπων του Kew εντάσσουν σήμερα το όνομα Ophrys alasiatica στη συνωνυμία της Ophrys sphegodes subsp. taurica.
Το όνομα Ophrys alasiatica δημοσιεύθηκε το 2002 από τους Karel C.A.J.
Η σύγχρονη Flora of Cyprus καταγράφει το κυπριακό φυτό ως Ophrys sphegodes subsp. taurica (Aggeenko) Soó ex Niketić & Djordjević.
Τα Plants of the World Online

Correction of the former title
The former title requires correction. Ophrys alasiatica Kreutz, Segers & H.Walraven and Ophrys sphegodes subsp. alasiatica are not the names currently accepted by Plants of the World Online and Flora of Cyprus – a dynamic checklist.
Both modern databases include the Cypriot plant in the accepted taxon Ophrys sphegodes subsp. taurica (Aggeenko) Soó ex Niketić & Djordjević. The names Ophrys alasiatica and Ophrys sphegodes subsp. alasiatica are retained as synonyms.
The phrase “Endemic to Cyprus” must also be removed. Ophrys alasiatica was described in 2002 as a distinctive Cypriot species and was initially considered endemic. It was subsequently recorded from Lebanon, while under the current broader taxonomic treatment it is included in Ophrys sphegodes subsp. taurica, which has a wide distribution in the eastern Mediterranean, the Balkans, the Caucasus region and western Asia.
The corrected title of the post should therefore be:
Ophrys sphegodes subsp. taurica (Aggeenko) Soó ex Niketić & Djordjević ≡ Ophrys alasiatica Kreutz, Segers & H.Walraven – Cyprus
The bee orchid described from Cyprus
Ophrys alasiatica was described as a new species in 2002 by Karel C.A.J. Kreutz, Mieke Segers and Hubert Walraven following their study of plants belonging to the Ophrys mammosa group in Cyprus. Its scientific description was published in the Journal Europäischer Orchideen.
Before its formal description, the Cypriot plants had been assigned to different taxa or referred to by provisional names. They had been associated, among others, with Ophrys sphegodes, Ophrys sintenisii and Ophrys aesculapii, demonstrating the difficulty of interpreting this group taxonomically.
The authors of the original description considered that its particular combination of morphological, ecological and phenological characteristics justified the recognition of a new species, Ophrys alasiatica. The name was widely used for several years in books and checklists concerning the orchids of Cyprus.
The origin of the name
The name of the genus Ophrys comes from the Ancient Greek word “ὀφρύς”, meaning eyebrow. It is associated with the hairy and velvety appearance of the labellum of many members of the genus.
The epithet alasiatica is derived from Alashiya, an ancient name historically associated with Cyprus. It was chosen to emphasize the Cypriot origin of the plant described as a new species.
The epithet taurica refers to Taurica, a historical geographical name associated with Crimea. The earlier basionym Ophrys aranifera var. taurica was published by Aggeenko in the nineteenth century and has nomenclatural priority under the current broad taxonomic treatment.
Current taxonomic treatment
The taxonomy of the genus Ophrys is among the most controversial in European and Mediterranean orchids. Some authors recognize many narrowly defined species based on small morphological differences, geographical isolation and relationships with particular pollinators. Others adopt broader species concepts and include many local forms as subspecies or synonyms.
Plants of the World Online currently accept the name Ophrys sphegodes subsp. taurica and treat Ophrys alasiatica as one of its heterotypic synonyms. The later combination Ophrys sphegodes subsp. alasiatica is treated in the same way.
Flora of Cyprus – a dynamic checklist also follows the name Ophrys sphegodes subsp. taurica. It is therefore the most appropriate accepted name for the corrected title of the post.
The name Ophrys alasiatica remains important because it forms part of the history of research on the Cypriot plants and continues to be used by several orchid specialists. It should, however, be presented as a synonym rather than as the only indisputably accepted name.
Why it is no longer considered endemic to Cyprus
When Ophrys alasiatica was described in 2002, it was considered a species endemic to Cyprus. This description was subsequently adopted in books, websites, photographic collections and older posts.
In 2015, a scientific paper on the orchids of Lebanon reported Ophrys alasiatica as a new record for that country. The plant had been photographed at Chekka on 19 February 2011. The authors noted that only one individual had been found and left open the possibility that it represented a casual occurrence.
Even if the Lebanese record were treated with caution, the present inclusion of the Cypriot plant within Ophrys sphegodes subsp. taurica excludes its description as endemic to Cyprus. The accepted subspecies has a much wider natural distribution.
According to Plants of the World Online, Ophrys sphegodes subsp. taurica occurs from southeastern Europe and the Balkans to the eastern Mediterranean, Turkey, the Caucasus, Iran and Iraq. Its range also includes Cyprus, Crete, the East Aegean Islands, Lebanon, Syria and Palestine.
The phrase “Endemic to Cyprus” should therefore no longer appear in the title. The safe description is “Native to Cyprus” or simply “Cyprus”.
Morphology
Ophrys sphegodes subsp. taurica is a perennial, terrestrial and tuberous orchid. Its above-ground parts develop during the wet season, while they dry out in summer and the plant survives underground by means of its tubers.
The leaves form a basal rosette and are simple, entire, ovate to lanceolate, and green or slightly glaucous. Smaller leaves occur along the upright flowering stem.
The inflorescence is relatively lax and usually bears only a few flowers. The size of the plant and the number of flowers are influenced by its age, moisture, rainfall, soil and the conditions of the locality.
The distinctive flowers
The sepals are usually green or yellowish-green and spread around the labellum. The petals are considerably smaller, relatively short and often triangular. Their colour may be yellowish-green, brownish or slightly reddish.
The labellum is brown to very dark brown, velvety and usually ovate or nearly rounded. Its lateral protuberances may be prominent, while its margin is often paler, yellowish or light brown.
A smooth and glossy area known as the speculum occurs at the centre of the labellum. The basal field is generally paler than the remainder of the labellum.
The original description of Ophrys alasiatica emphasized its medium-sized flowers, pale basal field, greenish-yellow lateral protuberances and the often yellow or pale brown margin of the labellum.
Difficulties in identification
Identifying plants of the Ophrys sphegodes–mammosa group is difficult because many taxa display overlapping morphological characteristics. The size and shape of the labellum, its colour, speculum and lateral protuberances may vary even between plants in the same population.
Reliable identification should consider the entire plant, several mature flowers, the form of the petals and sepals, the basal field, the margin of the labellum, the speculum, flowering season and habitat.
A photograph taken from only one angle is not always sufficient. Front and side views of the flower, photographs of the inflorescence and basal rosette, and records of the population and surrounding habitat are particularly useful.
Sexual deception and pollination
Like other orchids of the genus Ophrys, it does not rely on the production of nectar. Its flowers attract male insects by imitating chemical, visual and tactile characteristics of females.
The labellum resembles an insect’s body, while the volatile substances produced by the flower may imitate sexual pheromones. The male attempts to mate with the flower in a behaviour known as pseudocopulation.
During contact, the pollinia become attached to the insect’s body. If the insect subsequently visits another flower, it may transfer pollen to the stigma and achieve pollination.
A particular pollinator species should not be attributed to the Cypriot plants without direct scientific evidence. Their taxonomic transfer from the narrowly defined Ophrys alasiatica to the broader Ophrys sphegodes subsp. taurica makes it especially important to establish precisely which population each pollinator observation concerns.
Habitat and flowering in Cyprus
In Cyprus, it occurs in open Mediterranean habitats, including phrygana, low scrubland, grassy clearings, uncultivated ground and woodland openings.
It prefers localities with sufficient light and low to moderate competition from surrounding vegetation. Its appearance and abundance may vary considerably between years according to rainfall and temperature.
The plants described in Cyprus as Ophrys alasiatica are characterized by relatively early flowering. They flower mainly from late winter through spring, with variations according to altitude and local conditions.
The photographs in this post were taken at Souni on 25 March 2021, during the expected flowering period of the Cypriot plants.
Tubers, seeds and fungi
Below the ground, the plant develops tubers in which nutrients are stored. A new tuber develops during the active season and supports the plant during the following year.
Following pollination, capsules are produced containing a very large number of microscopic seeds. The seeds are sufficiently light to be dispersed by wind but possess no adequate nutrient reserves.
To germinate, they must encounter compatible mycorrhizal fungi in the soil. The development of a new plant therefore depends on a complex combination of conditions rather than merely on the presence of seeds.
This dependence on fungi is one of the reasons why wild orchids should never be uprooted or transplanted.
Threats and protection
The principal threats include habitat destruction and alteration, building development, road construction, deep ploughing, herbicide use and inappropriate vegetation clearance.
Cutting flowering stems before the fruits mature prevents seed production and dispersal. Repeated cutting may gradually cause small populations to decline.
The collection and uprooting of wild orchids must be strictly avoided. The plants are closely associated with their soil, underground fungi and the particular conditions of their natural locality.
Care must also be taken during photography to avoid trampling small rosettes or non-flowering plants. Removing the surrounding vegetation to obtain a clearer photograph may also damage the microhabitat.
An important part of the history of Cyprus orchids
The name Ophrys alasiatica remains important in the botanical history of Cyprus because the plant was described as a new species from Cypriot material and received a name referring to ancient Alashiya.
Its subsequent inclusion in Ophrys sphegodes subsp. taurica does not diminish the importance of the Cypriot populations. It does, however, demonstrate how taxonomic interpretation may change when more populations are compared and different species concepts are applied.
