Στην Κύπρο είναι ιθαγενές και, σύμφωνα με τη Flora of Cyprus – a dynamic checklist, σχεδόν ενδημικό taxon, με παρουσία επίσης στην Ανατολία. Τα Plants of the World Online
Η ονομασία αυτή δεν γίνεται σήμερα αποδεκτή ως ξεχωριστό είδος από τα Plants of the World Online, αλλά περιλαμβάνεται στα συνώνυμα της Ophrys bornmuelleri subsp. bornmuelleri.
Τα Plants of the World Online δέχονται σήμερα το είδος Ophrys bornmuelleri και αναγνωρίζουν τέσσερα υποείδη.
Τα Plants of the World Online

A spectacular bee orchid of the eastern Mediterranean
Ophrys bornmuelleri subsp. bornmuelleri is one of the most impressive wild orchids of Cyprus. It belongs to a taxonomically complex group of bee orchids with large, dark and intricately patterned flowers.
In Cyprus, it is indigenous and, according to Flora of Cyprus – a dynamic checklist, near-endemic, also occurring in Anatolia. Plants of the World Online follow a broader distributional treatment and record it from the eastern Mediterranean to northern Iraq.
This difference partly reflects how different authorities delimit and unite related populations. In the context of the Cypriot flora, it may be described as “near-endemic to Cyprus”, with the clarification that Kew applies a broader taxonomic and geographical concept.
The origin of the name
The name Ophrys comes from the Ancient Greek word “ὀφρύς”, meaning eyebrow. It is associated with the hairy, velvety margin of the labellum in many members of the genus.
The epithet bornmuelleri honours the German botanist Joseph Friedrich Nicolaus Bornmüller, who lived from 1862 to 1948 and undertook important botanical research in southeastern Europe and western Asia.
The name Ophrys aphrodite, proposed in 2012, refers to Aphrodite, the goddess particularly associated with Cyprus. Plants of the World Online do not currently accept it as a separate species but include it among the synonyms of Ophrys bornmuelleri subsp. bornmuelleri.
Taxonomic history
Ophrys bornmuelleri was described by M.Schulze in 1899. Different authors subsequently treated it as a separate species or as a subspecies of related species, particularly Ophrys fuciflora and Ophrys holosericea.
Plants of the World Online currently accept Ophrys bornmuelleri as a species with four subspecies, including the typical Ophrys bornmuelleri subsp. bornmuelleri.
When a subspecies repeats the specific epithet, no additional author is placed after the subspecific name. The correct form is therefore Ophrys bornmuelleri M.Schulze subsp. bornmuelleri.
Ophrys aphrodite Devillers & Devillers-Tersch., published in 2012, is treated by Kew as a heterotypic synonym of the typical subspecies.
Morphology
It is a perennial, terrestrial and tuberous orchid. Its above-ground parts dry out during summer, while the plant survives below the ground through its tubers.
The leaves form a basal rosette and are simple, entire, ovate to lanceolate, green or slightly glaucous. The flowering stem is upright and generally bears a few to several flowers in a relatively lax inflorescence.
The sepals may be green, greenish-white, whitish or pink. The petals are smaller and may display a similar or darker colour.
The characteristic labellum
The labellum is large, broad, brown to very dark brown and partly covered with dense velvety hairs. It is generally three-lobed, with conspicuous lateral protuberances.
The speculum is situated at its centre and consists of a smooth, glossy area with pale lines or more complex patterns. Its form and colour display substantial natural variation.
A distinctive appendage occurs at the apex of the labellum. It may be yellowish or greenish and is frequently directed upwards. Its size and position are useful features but should not be used alone for identification.
Identification difficulties
Distinguishing it from Ophrys bornmuelleri subsp. grandiflora and other related Cypriot bee orchids requires particular care. Plants vary in flower size, labellum shape, speculum and sepal colour.
Reliable identification should use photographs of the entire plant, inflorescence, front and side views of several flowers, basal rosette and habitat.
Natural hybridization with other bee orchids may produce plants with intermediate characteristics. A single close-up photograph is therefore not always sufficient.
Sexual deception and pollination
Like other orchids of the genus Ophrys, it employs sexual deception. Its flowers offer no nectar but visually, chemically and tactilely imitate female insects.
The labellum resembles a female insect’s body, while the flower produces volatile compounds similar to sexual pheromone signals. A male approaches and attempts to mate with the flower, a behaviour known as pseudocopulation.
During contact, the pollinia become attached to the insect and may be transferred to the stigma of another flower.
No particular pollinator species should be assigned to the Cypriot populations without direct published evidence, especially because different authorities delimit the Ophrys bornmuelleri complex differently.
Habitat in Cyprus
In Cyprus, it grows in phrygana, open scrubland, grassy places, rocky slopes, field margins and woodland openings. It prefers well-lit localities with well-drained soil.
The original post gives an altitudinal range from sea level to approximately 925 metres. It may therefore occur in coastal lowlands, hilly areas and higher localities.
Flowering
According to Flora of Cyprus, it flowers from February to April. The precise period is influenced by altitude, exposure, rainfall and the temperatures of each year.
The photographs were taken at Souni on 25 March 2021 and at Saint Hilarion on 2 April 2023. Both dates fall within its documented flowering period.
Distribution and near-endemic status
Flora of Cyprus classifies the subspecies as indigenous and near-endemic to Cyprus, also occurring in Anatolia.
Plants of the World Online provide a broader distribution extending from the eastern Mediterranean to northern Iraq, including Cyprus, the East Aegean Islands, Greece, Crete, Turkey, Lebanon, Syria, Palestine and Iraq.
This difference demonstrates the importance of naming the taxonomic source. The description “near-endemic according to Flora of Cyprus” may be retained without presenting it as an undisputed global conclusion.
Tubers, seeds and fungi
A new underground tuber develops during the growing season and supports the plant in the following year. After fruiting, the above-ground parts dry out and the plant remains underground during summer.
The capsules contain thousands of microscopic seeds lacking adequate nutrient reserves. They require compatible mycorrhizal fungi in the soil to germinate.
This dependence explains why wild bee orchids should never be uprooted or transplanted. Their removal disrupts the specialized underground relationships upon which they depend.
Threats and protection
The main threats include habitat destruction or alteration, development, road construction, ploughing, herbicide use, premature vegetation clearance and plant collection.
Photography should be carried out without trampling, touching the plants or removing surrounding vegetation. Small rosettes or non-flowering individuals may be present around a flowering plant but remain difficult to detect.
Conservation requires protection of the entire microhabitat, soil, mycorrhizal fungi and suitable pollinators.
