Η Flora of Cyprus – a dynamic checklist εξακολουθεί να χρησιμοποιεί το όνομα Orchis quadripunctata subsp. sezikiana. Ωστόσο, η σημερινή ταξινομική βάση των Plants of the World Online αντιμετωπίζει το φυτό ως υβριδογενές taxon και δέχεται το όνομα Orchis × sezikiana B.Baumann & H.Baumann.
Η Flora of Cyprus καταγράφει το taxon σε υψόμετρα από 250 έως 925 μέτρα.
Η Flora of Cyprus χαρακτηρίζει το Orchis quadripunctata subsp. sezikiana ως ιθαγενές αλλά μη ενδημικό.

explanation of the title
Flora of Cyprus – a dynamic checklist continues to use the name Orchis quadripunctata subsp. sezikiana. However, Plants of the World Online currently treat the plant as a taxon of hybrid origin and accept the name Orchis × sezikiana B.Baumann & H.Baumann.
The multiplication sign before the specific epithet is important: it indicates that the taxon is regarded as being of hybrid origin rather than an ordinary separate species. Orchis anatolica and Orchis quadripunctata are cited as its probable parents.
The plant should not be described as endemic to Cyprus. Flora of Cyprus explicitly records it as indigenous and not endemic, while corresponding populations are also reported from the Aegean and the eastern Mediterranean.
An orchid with a disputed taxonomic identity
Orchis × sezikiana is a terrestrial orchid with morphological characteristics intermediate between Orchis anatolica and Orchis quadripunctata. This intermediate appearance has resulted in different scientific interpretations.
Some authors treated it as a distinct species under the name Orchis sezikiana. Others classified it as a subspecies of either Orchis quadripunctata or Orchis anatolica. More recent taxonomic treatments regard it as a taxon of hybrid origin and use the name Orchis × sezikiana.
These different names do not necessarily refer to different plants. They reflect different interpretations of the origin, stability and taxonomic value of the populations.
The meaning of the multiplication sign
In botanical nomenclature, the multiplication sign indicates a hybrid. When placed between the generic name and the specific epithet, as in Orchis × sezikiana, it denotes a named hybrid taxon.
Hybrid origin does not mean that every individual resulted recently from a single crossing event. A hybrid-derived population may reproduce, display a degree of stability and persist for many generations.
It may nevertheless show considerable morphological variation. Some plants may resemble one probable parent more closely, while others approach the second parent or display intermediate characteristics.
The probable parental orchids
Orchis anatolica is a slender eastern Mediterranean orchid with a relatively lax inflorescence, often spotted leaves and pink to purple flowers. It has a long spur that may be horizontal or ascending.
Orchis quadripunctata is characterized by smaller flowers and conspicuous dark spots on the paler central section of the labellum. The epithet quadripunctata means “four-spotted”, although the actual number of visible spots may vary.
Orchis × sezikiana combines features of these two groups to varying degrees. However, identification as a hybrid should not be based on one characteristic or on a single close-up photograph of the flower.
Morphology
It is a perennial, terrestrial and tuberous orchid, generally small to medium-sized. It may reach approximately 30 centimetres, although its height varies according to age and local conditions.
The stem is upright and hairless, often green below and reddish or purple towards its upper section. The inflorescence is generally lax and bears from a few to several flowers.
The basal leaves are simple, entire and oblong to elliptical. They may bear dark purple or brown markings, although unspotted plants also occur. The upper leaves are smaller and partly sheath the stem.
The flowers
The flowers are highly variable and may be white, pale pink, lilac or purple. The lateral sepals generally spread or rise, while the petals converge to form a small hood above the column.
The labellum may be entire, weakly three-lobed or more distinctly three-lobed. Its central part is often paler and bears four, six or more purplish-red spots.
The spur is long and generally directed downwards or curved. Its shape, length and direction are useful features but are not sufficient alone for reliable identification.
The pronounced variability of the flowers is consistent with the plant’s complex taxonomic and possibly hybrid nature.
Why identification is difficult
Reliable identification requires examination of the entire plant rather than only the labellum. The leaves, density of the inflorescence, shape and position of the sepals, labellum, markings and spur must all be assessed.
It is also necessary to establish which related species occur in the same area and whether their flowering periods overlap. The presence of the probable parents supports a hybrid interpretation but does not constitute proof by itself.
The high degree of morphological variation means that different plants within the same population may not look identical. Some may resemble Orchis anatolica more closely, while others approach Orchis quadripunctata.
Habitat in Cyprus
In Cyprus, it occurs on rocky slopes, in grassy places, open scrubland and clearings or openings in pine woodland. It has been recorded on both limestone and igneous substrates.
The localities are generally sunny or lightly shaded and retain sufficient moisture during the growing season. During the hot and dry summer, the above-ground parts disappear.
Flora of Cyprus records the taxon from elevations of 250–925 metres. Other secondary sources provide slightly different limits, but the data of the authoritative Cypriot checklist are used here.
Flowering period
According to Flora of Cyprus, it flowers from February to May. This broad period reflects differences in altitude, geographical position, exposure and the weather conditions of each year.
It may flower early in lower and warmer areas, whereas flowering occurs later at higher elevations or colder localities.
The photographs in this post were taken at Gerasa in the Limassol District on 7 April 2019, within its recorded flowering period.
Pollination
The flowers attract insects through their colour, the form of the labellum and the presence of the spur. Insects land on the labellum and investigate the entrance to the flower.
During contact with the column, the pollinia may become attached to the insect’s head. If it subsequently visits another compatible flower, it may transfer pollen to the stigma.
No adequate evidence was found identifying a particular pollinator of the Cypriot populations. A specific insect species should therefore not be named without direct observation and reliable scientific confirmation.
Tubers, seeds and fungi
Below the ground, tubers store nutrients. The reserves of the old tuber are used during the active season, while a new tuber develops for the following year.
Following pollination, capsules develop and contain a very large number of microscopic seeds. The seeds are dispersed by wind but possess no adequate nutrient reserves.
They require compatible mycorrhizal fungi in the soil to germinate. Their development therefore depends on a suitable habitat and specialized underground ecological relationships.
Distribution and endemism
Flora of Cyprus classifies Orchis quadripunctata subsp. sezikiana as indigenous but not endemic. The phrase “Endemic to Cyprus” should therefore not be added to the title.
Depending on the taxonomic treatment, corresponding plants are also reported from Crete, the East Aegean Islands and parts of western and southern Turkey.
Its geographical distribution is complicated by its different treatment as a species, subspecies or hybrid. Each record must therefore be interpreted together with the taxonomic system used by its source.
Threats and protection
Populations may be affected by habitat destruction and alteration, road and engineering works, development, ploughing, herbicide use and inappropriate vegetation clearance.
Cutting the flowering stems before the capsules mature prevents seed dispersal. Collection and uprooting directly destroy the plants and disrupt their relationship with the soil and essential fungi.
During photography, surrounding rosettes should not be trampled and vegetation should not be removed. Small or non-flowering plants may be present but difficult to detect.
A living example of the complexity of orchid taxonomy
Orchis × sezikiana is a characteristic example of the difficulty of delimiting Mediterranean orchids. Its taxonomic history includes treatment as a species, as a subspecies of two different species and as a hybrid-derived taxon.
Its modern presentation should explain this uncertainty clearly. The Kew-accepted name Orchis × sezikiana may be used as the principal title, while Orchis quadripunctata subsp. sezikiana, used by Flora of Cyprus, should remain as an important synonym and alternative taxonomic treatment.
