1. Alisma lanceolatum With.
2. Baldellia ranunculoides (L.) Parl.
3. Damasonium bourgaei Coss.
Η Flora of Cyprus ακολουθεί την ονομασία Damasonium bourgaei Coss.

The family Alismataceae, commonly known as the water-plantain family, comprises herbaceous plants closely associated with wetlands and aquatic ecosystems. It belongs to the order Alismatales and consists mainly of aquatic, marshland or amphibious plants.
According to the organized checklist of the Cypriot flora, Alismataceae is represented in Cyprus by 3 genera and 3 taxa. All three species are native non-endemic plants. No endemic, alien or naturalized species, hybrids or taxa of uncertain status are recorded.
General characteristics
Members of Alismataceae are usually perennial or annual herbs growing in shallow water, wet ground or along the margins of lakes, rivers, streams, canals and temporary pools.
Their leaves frequently form a basal rosette. Depending on the water level and developmental stage, they may be submerged, floating or emergent. Leaf shape varies considerably, ranging from narrow and lanceolate to ovate or heart-shaped.
The flowers are usually radially symmetrical, with three sepals and three petals. The petals are commonly white or pale pink. Stamens and carpels may be numerous. The fruits are generally achenes or small follicles, which in certain genera form distinctive star-shaped arrangements.
Distribution and habitats
The family is widely distributed throughout temperate, subtropical and tropical regions of the world. Most species depend on fresh water or soils that remain wet for a substantial part of the year.
In Cyprus, members of the family occur in restricted and sensitive habitats, including:
- temporary pools and seasonally flooded depressions,
- marshes and wet meadows,
- riverbanks and stream margins,
- irrigation channels and ditches,
- shallow standing or slowly flowing water,
- muddy surfaces exposed as water levels fall.
Their presence and growth are directly influenced by the duration of flooding, water depth and quality, and the timing of the drying phase in seasonal wetlands.
Species of the family in Cyprus
1. Alisma lanceolatum With.
A native non-endemic species of Cyprus. It is a perennial marsh or emergent aquatic plant commonly known as narrow-leaved water-plantain.
It forms a basal rosette of long-stalked, usually lance-shaped leaves. The inflorescence is erect and branched, bearing numerous small flowers with white to pale pink petals.
It grows in shallow fresh water, ditches, marshes, margins and other permanently or seasonally wet places. Its native global range extends from Macaronesia and northwestern Africa through Europe to Asia and China.
The Flora of Cyprus records it as native and non-endemic. Its Cyprus Red Data Book category is given as Data Deficient (DD).
2. Baldellia ranunculoides (L.) Parl.
A native non-endemic species commonly known as lesser water-plantain. It is a perennial marsh plant.
It has basal leaves whose shape may vary according to growing conditions and water depth. Its flowers have three pale pink or nearly white petals and are carried on slender stalks.
The species grows in shallow water, wet depressions, pool margins, marshes and muddy ground. It depends strongly on the preservation of the natural hydrological cycle of its habitats.
Its native range includes the Azores and extends from Europe to the Mediterranean.
3. Damasonium bourgaei Coss.
A native non-endemic species of Cyprus. It is an annual aquatic or amphibious plant adapted mainly to seasonally flooded wetlands.
It develops when suitable depressions fill with water during the rainy season. Flowering and fruiting are generally completed as the water level falls. Its fruits form a distinctive star-shaped arrangement, a characteristic feature of the genus Damasonium.
It grows in temporary pools, shallow flooded depressions and muddy soils. Its seeds can remain dormant in the soil and germinate when suitable hydrological conditions return.
Its native distribution extends from the Mediterranean to eastern India. In older Cypriot botanical literature, the name Damasonium alisma was misapplied to this species. The Flora of Cyprus follows the name Damasonium bourgaei Coss.
Ecological importance
Alismataceae species form part of the natural vegetation of freshwater habitats and temporary wetlands. They provide shelter for aquatic invertebrates, help stabilize wet soils and contribute to the functioning of shallow-water ecosystems.
Their presence may also indicate that a wetland retains, at least to some extent, its natural cycle of flooding and drying.
Threats and protection
The limited extent and sensitivity of Cypriot wetlands make members of the family vulnerable to environmental change. Their principal threats include:
- drainage or infilling of wetlands,
- water abstraction and diversion,
- alteration of the natural flooding period,
- pollution and eutrophication,
- herbicides and other chemical substances,
- clearing of channels and ditches,
- destruction of waterside vegetation,
- excessive grazing or trampling,
- prolonged drought and climate change.
Protecting temporary pools is important even when they appear completely dry during summer. Their dry soils may contain valuable seed banks from which aquatic and amphibious plants reappear after rainfall.
