The Amaranthaceae, commonly known as the amaranth family, comprises mainly annual or perennial herbs, together with some shrubs. It belongs to the order Caryophyllales and has a worldwide distribution, with particularly high diversity in warm, dry and seasonally arid regions.
According to the organized checklist of the Cypriot flora, Amaranthaceae is represented in Cyprus by 2 genera and 16 taxa:
- 3 native non-endemic taxa,
- 1 endemic species,
- 10 alien or naturalized taxa,
- no hybrids,
- 2 taxa of uncertain status.
The two genera included in the checklist are Amaranthus and Bosea.
Principal morphological characteristics
Most members of the family are annual or perennial herbs. Some are shrubs, while others may have succulent stems or bear spines.
The leaves are simple, lack stipules and are arranged alternately or oppositely along the stems. Their shape varies from ovate and rhombic to lanceolate.
The flowers are usually very small and inconspicuous. They may be bisexual or unisexual and are grouped in dense axillary or terminal clusters, spikes, heads or branched panicles. Petals are absent, and the perianth generally consists of three to five small tepals.
The fruit is usually a small capsule, utricle or achene containing one or a few seeds. In Amaranthus, the seeds are often small, smooth, glossy and black or brown. They are produced in large numbers and may remain in the soil for considerable periods.
Distribution and habitats
Amaranthaceae has an almost worldwide distribution. Many species are adapted to high temperatures, intense sunlight, disturbed ground and environments with limited moisture.
In Cyprus, species of Amaranthus occur mainly in:
- cultivated and abandoned fields,
- gardens and plant nurseries,
- irrigated land,
- roadsides and path margins,
- heaps of soil and rubble,
- urban and suburban areas,
- moist or nutrient-rich soils,
- the margins of streams, channels and reservoirs.
Many alien species are introduced accidentally through crop seed, animal feed, soil, nursery plants or transported goods. Some occur only casually, whereas others become established and form persistent populations.
The endemic Bosea cypria is a perennial shrub and differs markedly from the herbaceous amaranths. It occurs in rocky places, slopes, ravines, scrubland, woodland margins and near old walls.
Native non-endemic taxa
1. Amaranthus graecizans L. subsp. graecizans
A native non-endemic annual herb. It grows mainly in open and disturbed places, cultivated ground, roadsides and areas retaining seasonal moisture.
Its stems may be erect, ascending or spreading. The small greenish flowers form dense clusters in the leaf axils.
2. Amaranthus graecizans subsp. silvestris (Vill.) Brenan
A native non-endemic subspecies and annual plant. In Cyprus, it is recorded mainly at low elevations, from sea level to approximately 225 metres.
It grows in disturbed, cultivated or seasonally moist soils. It is distinguished from the typical subspecies through a combination of characteristics involving the leaves, bracts, flowers and fruits.
3. Amaranthus viridis L.
A native non-endemic annual herb known as green amaranth or slender amaranth.
It usually has erect or ascending, green and relatively smooth stems. The flowers form slender green terminal or axillary inflorescences. In Cyprus, it is recorded mainly at low elevations, up to approximately 225 metres.
It grows in irrigated fields, gardens, roadsides, moist disturbed soils and urban areas.
The endemic species of Cyprus
4. Bosea cypria Schinz & Autran
Bosea cypria is endemic to Cyprus and is the only endemic member of the family in the checklist. It is an evergreen or semi-evergreen, much-branched shrub locally known as zoulatsia.
It can develop into a relatively large shrub with flexible branches and simple, alternate leaves. Its flowers are small and greenish and are arranged in branched inflorescences. The small fleshy fruits become reddish to dark-coloured as they ripen.
It occurs from sea level to approximately 600 metres in rocky slopes, ravines, scrubland, woodland margins and old walls. Its natural global distribution is restricted to Cyprus.
Different author citations may be encountered in international taxonomic databases. Plants of the World Online uses Bosea cypria Boiss. ex Hook.f., whereas the Cypriot checklist follows the author citation Bosea cypria Schinz & Autran.
Alien or naturalized taxa
5. Amaranthus albus L.
An alien annual species known as tumbleweed amaranth. It has a strongly branched, often almost spherical growth form. When dry, the entire plant may break away and be rolled by the wind, dispersing its seeds.
6. Amaranthus blitoides S.Watson
An alien annual species, usually with spreading or prostrate stems. It occurs in cultivated fields, gardens, pavements, roadsides and compacted disturbed ground.
7. Amaranthus caudatus L.
A cultivated South American species known as love-lies-bleeding. It is distinguished by its long, frequently pendulous, reddish or purple inflorescences. In Cyprus, it may occur as an escape from cultivation.
8. Amaranthus emarginatus subsp. pseudogracilis (Thell.) Hügin
An alien annual subspecies classified by the Flora of Cyprus as casual. This means that it may occur outside cultivation without having been demonstrated to form stable, self-sustaining populations.
9. Amaranthus hybridus L.
An alien annual species of American origin. It is erect and often robust, with elongated green or reddish inflorescences. It occurs mainly in cultivated fields and nitrogen-rich soils.
Despite its scientific name, it is a recognized species and is not classified as a hybrid in the Cypriot checklist.
10. Amaranthus palmeri S.Watson
An annual dioecious species of American origin known as Palmer amaranth. Male and female flowers are produced on separate plants.
It produces large quantities of seed, grows rapidly and can become a serious agricultural weed. Its spread requires monitoring, particularly in irrigated farmland.
11. Amaranthus powellii S.Watson
An erect alien annual of American origin. It grows in cultivated and disturbed soils and may be confused with related species, especially Amaranthus hybridus.
12. Amaranthus quitensis Kunth
An alien annual species of South American origin. It grows in cultivated fields, gardens, waste ground and other human-influenced habitats.
Its identification requires careful examination of the flowers, bracts and fruits because it resembles other members of the Amaranthus hybridus group.
13. Amaranthus retroflexus L.
A robust alien annual known as redroot pigweed. The base of its stem may be reddish, and the plant is often hairy.
It is a widespread weed of cultivated and disturbed ground. It produces large numbers of seeds and can form dense populations.
14. Amaranthus spinosus L.
An alien annual of tropical American origin known as spiny amaranth. It is easily recognized by the strong paired spines occurring at the bases of the leaves.
It grows in irrigated land, cultivated fields, roadsides and other warm, disturbed habitats.
Taxa of uncertain status
15. Amaranthus cruentus L.
A species of American origin known as blood amaranth or red amaranth. It is cultivated as an ornamental, leafy vegetable and pseudocereal.
Its presence in Cyprus may be associated with cultivation or occasional escape. In the checklist, it is provisionally placed in the category of uncertain status.
16. Amaranthus deflexus L.
A perennial or short-lived herb of South American origin known as large-fruit amaranth. It usually has spreading or ascending stems and occurs in urban, roadside and other disturbed habitats.
The precise status of its populations in Cyprus requires confirmation, and it is therefore classified among the taxa of uncertain status.
Identification of Amaranthus species
The identification of amaranths is frequently difficult. Species may show considerable morphological variation depending on their age, moisture availability, soil fertility and growing conditions.
Reliable identification requires examination of:
- the erect or prostrate growth of the plant,
- the presence or absence of hairs and spines,
- the shape and length of the bracts,
- the arrangement of the flowers,
- the number and shape of the tepals,
- the way in which the fruit opens,
- the size, colour and surface of the seeds,
- the occurrence of male and female flowers on the same or separate plants.
Photographs of the whole plant are not always sufficient for reliable identification. Examination of mature flowers and fruits with a hand lens or stereomicroscope is often necessary.
Ecological and economic importance
Amaranths produce numerous seeds that provide food for birds and small animals. The plants also offer cover and microhabitats for many invertebrates.
Several Amaranthus species are cultivated internationally for their edible seeds or leaves, while others are grown as ornamentals. At the same time, a number of species can become competitive weeds in agricultural land.
The endemic Bosea cypria is a distinctive component of Cyprus’s natural heritage and possesses considerable biogeographical and scientific value.
Threats and conservation
Potential local threats to the endemic Bosea cypria include the destruction of scrubland, residential and road development, fires, the clearing of rocky slopes and old walls, and the indiscriminate use of herbicides.
Its conservation depends on protecting its natural habitats and avoiding the destruction of wild populations.
Systematic monitoring is required for alien species of Amaranthus. Early recording of new populations is important because some species produce enormous quantities of seed and can spread rapidly through agricultural and disturbed areas.
