The Amaryllidaceae, commonly known as the amaryllis family, consists mainly of perennial bulbous plants. It belongs to the order Asparagales and is widely distributed throughout tropical, subtropical and temperate regions of the world.
Under its modern taxonomic circumscription, the family also includes the genus Allium, which was formerly placed in the Alliaceae or even the Liliaceae. Consequently, the Cypriot Amaryllidaceae includes wild onions and garlics as well as narcissi, the sea daffodil and other related bulbous plants.
According to the organized checklist of the Cypriot flora, Amaryllidaceae is represented in Cyprus by 5 genera and 30 taxa:
- 19 native non-endemic taxa,
- 7 endemic taxa,
- 4 alien or naturalized taxa,
- no hybrids,
- no taxa of uncertain status.
The five genera included in the checklist are Allium, Narcissus, Nothoscordum, Pancratium and Sternbergia.
Principal morphological characteristics
Most members of the family are perennial geophytes. They survive the unfavourable season by means of underground bulbs and produce their leaves and flowers when moisture and temperature conditions become suitable.
The leaves usually arise from the base of the plant. They may be linear, thread-like, flat, cylindrical or channelled. In many Allium species, the leaves and bulbs release a characteristic onion or garlic odour when crushed.
The flowers are bisexual and generally radially symmetrical. The perianth usually consists of six tepals. In Allium, the flowers are grouped in an umbel at the top of a leafless flowering stem and are enclosed before opening by one or more membranous spathes.
Narcissus and Pancratium possess a conspicuous corona in the centre of the flower. In Narcissus, the corona may be cup-shaped or tubular, whereas in Pancratium maritimum it is large, white and connects the bases of the stamens.
The ovary is superior in members of the subfamily Allioideae, which includes Allium, and inferior in most members of Amaryllidoideae, such as Narcissus, Pancratium and Sternbergia. The fruit is usually a capsule containing numerous seeds.
Distribution and habitats
Amaryllidaceae has an almost worldwide distribution, with important centres of diversity in the Mediterranean region, southern Africa and South America.
In Cyprus, members of the family occur in a wide range of habitats:
- rocky and stony slopes,
- phrygana and scrubland,
- woodland clearings,
- meadows and open grassland,
- cultivated and abandoned fields,
- roadsides and path margins,
- limestone and igneous substrates,
- sandy beaches and coastal dunes,
- montane and subalpine habitats of the Troodos range.
Flowering periods differ considerably among species. Some flower during autumn and winter, others in spring, while several Allium species bloom in late spring or summer, when their leaves may already have begun to wither.

It produces large yellow flowers in autumn, usually together with its leaves. In Cyprus, it is recorded as alien or naturalized and may occur near old gardens, inhabited areas, churches and abandoned cultivation.
Identification of the species
The identification of Amaryllidaceae species frequently requires the examination of flowering plants. This is particularly true of Allium, whose species may resemble one another and display considerable morphological variation.
Reliable identification requires examination of:
- the shape and structure of the bulb,
- the presence of small daughter bulbs,
- the number, width and cross-section of the leaves,
- the presence or absence of a garlic odour,
- the height and cross-section of the flowering stem,
- the shape and persistence of the spathe,
- the density and form of the inflorescence,
- the length of the pedicels,
- the colour, shape and venation of the tepals,
- the length and form of the stamens,
- the position of the stamens in relation to the perianth,
- the form of the ovary and capsule,
- the flowering period,
- the elevation and habitat type.
Photographs showing only the flowers or the entire plant are not always sufficient. Difficult Allium species require photographs and specimens of the leaves, plant base, spathe, flowers and mature fruits.
Ecological and economic importance
The flowers of many species produce nectar and pollen and attract bees, butterflies, flies and other insects. Coastal species such as Pancratium maritimum form a characteristic part of the natural vegetation of sandy dunes.
The genus Allium is of enormous economic importance. It includes major cultivated plants such as onions, garlic, leeks and chives. Many wild species are also valuable genetic resources for research and crop improvement.
Narcissus, Sternbergia and several Allium species are cultivated as ornamentals. However, many members of the family contain bioactive or toxic substances and should not be consumed without reliable identification and specialist knowledge.
The seven endemic Allium taxa constitute an important part of Cyprus’s unique natural heritage and possess particular taxonomic, biogeographical and scientific interest.
Threats and conservation
The principal threats affecting rare and endemic members of the family in Cyprus include:
- residential and tourism development,
- road construction and widening,
- destruction of rocky slopes and phrygana,
- quarrying,
- fires,
- intensification or abandonment of traditional agriculture,
- herbicide use,
- removal of bulbs and collection of plants,
- beach cleaning and levelling,
- vehicle traffic over coastal dunes,
- climate change and prolonged drought.
Particular priority should be given to the critically endangered Allium marathasicum, the other restricted endemic species, rare populations of Allium amethystinum and Allium roseum, and coastal sites supporting Pancratium maritimum.
Their conservation requires the preservation of natural habitats, prevention of uprooting and collection, monitoring of known populations and protection of localities from destructive interventions.
