5. Pistacia ×saportae Burnat

  • Pistacia lentiscus ×
  • Pistacia terebinthus.

The Anacardiaceae, commonly known as the cashew or sumac family, consists mainly of trees and shrubs. It belongs to the order Sapindales and is widely distributed throughout tropical, subtropical and warm temperate regions of the world.

The family includes economically important plants such as the pistachio, mango and cashew, together with many species producing resins, aromatic substances, dyes and fruits used as food or spices.

According to the organized checklist of the Cypriot flora, Anacardiaceae is represented in Cyprus by 2 genera and 5 taxa:

  • 4 native non-endemic species,
  • no endemic taxa,
  • no alien or naturalized taxa,
  • 1 hybrid,
  • no taxa of uncertain status.

The two genera included in the checklist are Pistacia and Rhus.

Principal morphological characteristics

Members of the Anacardiaceae are generally evergreen or deciduous trees and shrubs. Many species contain resinous or aromatic sap that may release a strong smell when the leaves or young branches are crushed.

The leaves are alternate and lack stipules. They may be simple, trifoliolate or pinnately compound. In the Cypriot species, they are generally leathery or relatively firm and possess adaptations to the dry conditions of the Mediterranean climate.

The flowers are small and often greenish, yellowish or reddish. They are arranged in axillary or terminal inflorescences, usually panicles or racemes. They may be bisexual or unisexual. In Pistacia, male and female flowers generally develop on separate plants.

The fruit is usually a drupe, with a fleshy or resinous outer layer and a hard inner stone surrounding the seed. The fruits of many species change from green to reddish, brown, blue or black as they ripen.

Distribution and habitats

The Anacardiaceae has a wide global distribution and includes more than 80 accepted genera. Its greatest diversity occurs in warm regions, although several species are characteristic components of Mediterranean vegetation.

In Cyprus, members of the family occur in:

  • maquis vegetation and scrubland,
  • phrygana,
  • rocky and stony slopes,
  • woodland margins and clearings,
  • gorges and valleys,
  • roadsides and path margins,
  • abandoned fields and terraces,
  • areas surrounding villages and old cultivation,
  • coastal and semi-montane regions,
  • mountain habitats up to approximately 1,500 metres.

Species of Pistacia are important components of natural Mediterranean vegetation and possess considerable resistance to drought, intense sunlight and poor stony soils.

Native non-endemic species

1. Pistacia atlantica Desf.

Pistacia atlantica is a native non-endemic deciduous tree known as Atlantic pistachio or Mount Atlas mastic tree, and locally in Cyprus as tremithia.

It may develop into a large, long-lived tree with a broad crown and strong trunk. Its leaves are pinnately compound, with several relatively narrow leaflets and an unwinged rachis. Male and female flowers generally develop on separate trees.

The fruits are small drupes, initially green, later reddish and finally darker when fully ripe. They provide food for birds, which contribute to seed dispersal.

In Cyprus, it occurs from sea level to approximately 1,525 metres. It grows on rocky slopes, in valleys, open scrub, woodland margins, agricultural areas and near old settlements.

Old and impressive trees survive in various parts of Cyprus and are important elements of both the natural and agricultural landscape. The fruits and resin had traditional uses, while the species may also be employed as rootstock for the cultivated pistachio.

2. Pistacia lentiscus L.

Pistacia lentiscus is a native non-endemic evergreen shrub or small tree known as mastic tree.

It has a dense, much-branched growth form and paripinnate compound leaves with leathery leaflets. The central rachis of the leaf is characteristically winged. The leaves remain green throughout the year and release a resinous smell when crushed.

Its flowers are very small and arranged in dense axillary inflorescences. The fruits are small spherical drupes that change from red to black when fully ripe.

The mastic tree is one of the most characteristic plants of Mediterranean maquis vegetation. In Cyprus, it occurs at low and middle elevations in scrubland, phrygana, stony slopes, gorges, coastal areas and abandoned fields.

It is highly resistant to drought, intense sunlight, wind and salinity. Its dense branches provide shelter and nesting sites for birds and other animals, while the fruits are an important food source for numerous bird species.

An aromatic resin known as mastic is obtained from this species and selected cultivated varieties. The well-known commercial mastic is produced mainly from a cultivated form of the species on the Greek island of Chios.

3. Pistacia terebinthus L.

Pistacia terebinthus is a native non-endemic deciduous shrub or small tree known as terebinth or turpentine tree.

Its leaves are pinnately compound and usually possess a terminal leaflet. The central rachis is not winged. Young leaves and shoots may be reddish, while the foliage frequently develops vivid colours before falling.

The small flowers appear in branched inflorescences during spring. The species flowers mainly in March and April. Its fruits are small drupes that change colour as they ripen.

In Cyprus, it occurs from sea level to approximately 1,375 metres. It grows on stony slopes, in scrubland, gorges, woodland margins, valleys and near cultivated or abandoned land.

Characteristic galls caused by small insects are frequently observed on the leaves and young branches. These may be pod-shaped, horn-shaped or bladder-like and are not fruits of the plant.

The resin of the species had various traditional uses and is known as terebinthine or Chian turpentine. The species has also been used as rootstock for the cultivated pistachio.

4. Rhus coriaria L.

Rhus coriaria is a native non-endemic deciduous shrub or small tree known as Sicilian sumac or tanner’s sumach.

It has erect or spreading stems and large pinnately compound leaves bearing numerous toothed leaflets. During autumn, the foliage may develop vivid red or orange colours.

The small greenish or yellowish flowers are grouped in dense terminal inflorescences. The fruits are small, spherical, reddish and covered with fine hairs. They form dense upright clusters that remain on the plant for a considerable period.

It occurs on stony slopes, roadsides, terraces, abandoned fields, old vineyards and around villages. It can spread through underground shoots and form dense stands.

Its dried and ground fruits are used as a spice with a characteristic sour flavour. The leaves and bark are rich in tannins and were traditionally used in leather tanning and textile dyeing.

The hybrid

5. Pistacia ×saportae Burnat

Pistacia ×saportae is a natural hybrid between:

  • Pistacia lentiscus ×
  • Pistacia terebinthus.

It is a shrub or small tree displaying morphological characters intermediate between its two parent species.

It may be semi-evergreen or retain part of its foliage for longer than Pistacia terebinthus. Its leaves show intermediate characteristics in the number of leaflets, the presence of a terminal leaflet and the degree to which the rachis is winged.

The hybrid occurs where the two parent species grow close together and flower at the same time. In Cyprus, it is recorded as a naturally occurring hybrid.

Reliable identification is difficult because individual plants of both parent species display natural morphological variation. Identification requires examination of several leaves, the inflorescences, fruits and the overall growth form.

Identification of the species

The distinction of the Cypriot Anacardiaceae is based mainly on the leaves, evergreen or deciduous behaviour, inflorescences and fruits.

Principal differences between the Pistacia species

  • Pistacia lentiscus is evergreen, has paripinnate leaves without a terminal leaflet and a conspicuously winged rachis.
  • Pistacia terebinthus is deciduous, usually has a terminal leaflet and an unwinged rachis.
  • Pistacia atlantica is generally a larger deciduous tree with more numerous and relatively narrower leaflets.
  • Pistacia ×saportae displays intermediate characters between Pistacia lentiscus and Pistacia terebinthus.

Rhus coriaria is distinguished by its numerous toothed leaflets and dense upright clusters of reddish, hairy fruits.

Reliable identification requires examination of:

  • evergreen or deciduous behaviour,
  • the number and shape of the leaflets,
  • the presence or absence of a terminal leaflet,
  • whether the leaf rachis is winged or unwinged,
  • the margins of the leaflets,
  • the arrangement of the flowers,
  • the colour and form of the mature fruits,
  • the presence of a resinous smell,
  • the overall form and size of the plant.

Ecological and economic importance

The Cypriot Anacardiaceae are important components of scrubland, maquis vegetation, stony slopes and agricultural landscapes.

Their fruits provide food for many birds, which transport the seeds over considerable distances. Dense shrubs offer cover, shelter and nesting sites for birds, reptiles, small mammals and invertebrates.

Their flowers attract pollinating insects, while their leaves and branches support numerous larvae, aphids and other insects. The characteristic galls of Pistacia species create specialized microhabitats for particular organisms.

Pistacia atlantica, Pistacia terebinthus and Pistacia lentiscus are drought-resistant and can contribute to soil stabilization and the restoration of degraded Mediterranean ecosystems.

Rhus coriaria has a long history of use as a spice, medicinal plant, source of tannins and natural dye. Resins obtained from Pistacia species have also had numerous traditional uses.

Threats and conservation

Most Cypriot species of the family are relatively resilient and widely distributed. Nevertheless, local populations and especially old trees may be threatened by:

  • residential and road development,
  • clearance of scrubland,
  • high-intensity fires,
  • quarrying,
  • clearance of roadside banks and agricultural land,
  • excessive herbicide use,
  • removal of old trees,
  • abandonment of traditional agricultural landscapes,
  • prolonged drought and climate change.

Large and ancient Pistacia atlantica trees are of particular value. Their preservation is important not only for biodiversity but also for the history, traditions and character of the Cypriot landscape.

Conservation of the species depends on maintaining natural maquis vegetation, old trees, scrubland, gorges and traditional agricultural areas.
