3. Cyprinia gracilis (Boiss.) Browicz
4. Nerium oleander L.
5. Trachomitum venetum (L.) Woodson
6. Vincetoxicum canescens (Willd.) Decne.
7. Catharanthus roseus (L.) G.Don
8. Vinca major L.
9. Vinca herbacea Waldst. & Kit.

Text by George Konstantinou
The Apocynaceae, commonly known as the dogbane family, includes trees, shrubs, perennial herbs and climbing or twining plants. It belongs to the order Gentianales and is particularly diverse in tropical and subtropical regions, although several species extend into temperate and Mediterranean zones.
Under its modern taxonomic circumscription, Apocynaceae also includes the plants formerly placed in the separate family Asclepiadaceae. The family therefore contains plants with considerable differences in floral structure and pollen transfer.
Many members produce white milky latex and contain powerful bioactive or poisonous substances. Some of these compounds are used medicinally, but consumption or uncontrolled use of the plants may cause severe poisoning.
According to the organized checklist of the Cypriot flora, Apocynaceae is represented in Cyprus by 8 genera and 9 taxa:
- 6 native non-endemic species,
- no endemic taxa,
- 2 alien or naturalized species,
- no hybrids,
- 1 species of uncertain status.
The eight genera included in the checklist are Catharanthus, Cionura, Cynanchum, Cyprinia, Nerium, Trachomitum, Vinca and Vincetoxicum.
Principal morphological characteristics
Members of the family may be erect or climbing, evergreen or deciduous, and herbaceous or woody. Many species contain white milky latex, while others produce clear or yellowish sap.
The leaves are generally simple, entire and without stipules. They are arranged oppositely, in whorls or, less frequently, alternately. In climbing species, the stems twine around the surrounding vegetation.
The flowers are usually bisexual and radially symmetrical. The corolla consists of five petals united at the base into a tube. Its lobes may be flat, reflexed or slightly twisted.
In members of the former Asclepiadaceae, including Cynanchum, Cyprinia and Vincetoxicum, the anthers are closely connected to the stigma and form a specialized reproductive structure. Pollen is transported in compact masses known as pollinia, rather than as individual grains.
The fruit frequently consists of two elongated follicles, although sometimes only one develops. At maturity, the follicle opens and releases numerous seeds. In many species, the seeds possess a tuft of long silky hairs that allows them to be dispersed by wind.
In Nerium, Vinca and Catharanthus, the flowers are conspicuous and frequently showy, whereas those of the climbing Asclepiadoideae are generally smaller and more specialized.
Distribution and habitats
Apocynaceae has an almost worldwide distribution, but its greatest diversity occurs in tropical and subtropical regions.
In Cyprus, members of the family occur in:
- rocky and stony slopes,
- phrygana and scrubland,
- woodland margins and clearings,
- gorges and valleys,
- river and stream banks,
- wet ground and reed beds,
- sandy or gravelly coastal habitats,
- salt marshes and brackish environments,
- hedges and other dense vegetation,
- gardens, inhabited areas and disturbed ground.
Native non-endemic species
1. Cionura erecta (L.) Griseb.
Cionura erecta is a native non-endemic perennial climbing or sprawling plant of the eastern Mediterranean and western Asia.
It develops long flexible stems that climb over shrubs, trees, fences and rocks. Its leaves are simple, opposite, relatively large and usually ovate to heart-shaped.
The flowers are small, white or yellowish and form groups in the leaf axils. The fruits are elongated follicles containing numerous seeds with tufts of silky hairs.
In Cyprus, it occurs in gorges, valleys, scrubland, roadsides, hedges and other habitats where it can obtain support from neighbouring vegetation.
Like many other members of the family, it contains milky latex and potentially poisonous substances. It should not be used as an edible or medicinal plant without specialist knowledge.
2. Cynanchum acutum L.
Cynanchum acutum is a native non-endemic perennial climber known as acute-leaved swallow-wort.
It has slender twining stems and opposite leaves that are usually ovate or heart-shaped with a pointed apex. Its small flowers are white, pinkish or pale purple and form axillary clusters.
The fruits are long narrow follicles. The seeds bear long white silky hairs and are readily transported by wind.
It occurs mainly in coastal and low-elevation regions, in moist or brackish soils, channel margins, reed beds, salt marshes, banks and dense vegetation.
It may form dense climbing masses over reeds and shrubs. Its flowers attract small bees, wasps, flies and other insects.
3. Cyprinia gracilis (Boiss.) Browicz
Cyprinia gracilis is a native non-endemic climber, despite the name of its genus referring to Cyprus. It is near-endemic to the region and occurs in Cyprus and a limited number of localities in southern Türkiye.
Cyprinia is considered a monotypic genus, containing only this species. Under some international taxonomic treatments, the species may be placed in a related genus.
It has slender twining stems and simple opposite leaves. Its flowers are small, yellowish to greenish-yellow, with a characteristic specialized structure in the centre.
Its fruits are elongated follicles containing seeds with long silky hairs.
In Cyprus, it occurs on rocky and stony slopes, in gorges, scrubland and woodland margins, climbing over shrubs and other plants.
4. Nerium oleander L.
Nerium oleander is a native non-endemic evergreen shrub or small tree known as oleander.
It has erect, much-branched stems and long, narrow, leathery leaves. The leaves are opposite or arranged in whorls of three and possess adaptations to drought.
The large showy flowers are generally pink in wild populations but may be white or display numerous other colours in cultivated varieties.
The fruits consist of two long narrow follicles. At maturity, they open and release numerous seeds bearing tufts of silky hairs.
In Cyprus, oleander is a characteristic plant of rivers, streams, valleys, gorges and seasonal watercourses. It can survive in habitats that become very dry during summer, provided its roots retain access to underground or seasonal moisture.
It is widely planted in gardens, parks, roads and central reservations because of its resistance to heat, drought, dust and atmospheric pollution.
All parts of the plant are highly poisonous. They contain cardiac glycosides, and ingestion of leaves, flowers, stems or other plant material may cause severe or fatal poisoning in humans and animals. Dried plant material remains toxic.
5. Trachomitum venetum (L.) Woodson
Trachomitum venetum is a native non-endemic perennial known as Venetian dogbane.
It develops erect stems from underground rhizomes and may form dense colonies. The leaves are opposite, simple, narrow to lanceolate and generally bluish-green.
Its small pink to purple flowers occur in groups on the upper parts of the stems. The fruits are long slender follicles containing numerous hairy seeds.
The species is mainly associated with sandy or gravelly coastal habitats, brackish soils, banks, damp depressions and other open wetland formations.
Its populations may be locally threatened by coastal habitat destruction, drainage, tourism development and interventions in wetland areas.
6. Vincetoxicum canescens (Willd.) Decne.
Vincetoxicum canescens is a native non-endemic perennial herb or low subshrub. The epithet canescens refers to the greyish or whitish appearance produced by the plant’s fine covering of hairs.
It has opposite leaves and small flowers in axillary clusters. The flowers are usually yellowish, brownish or purplish-brown and possess the specialized reproductive structure characteristic of the former Asclepiadaceae.
Its fruits are elongated follicles, and the seeds possess silky tufts for wind dispersal.
In Cyprus, it is rare and occurs in a limited number of rocky, stony and scrubby habitats. It has been assessed as Endangered (EN), with threats including habitat degradation and small population size.
As its generic name suggests, the plant contains potentially toxic compounds and should not be consumed.
Alien or naturalized species
7. Catharanthus roseus (L.) G.Don
Catharanthus roseus is a perennial herb or low subshrub native to Madagascar and known as Madagascar periwinkle.
It has opposite, glossy, dark green leaves with a conspicuous pale midrib. Its flowers possess five broad lobes and may be pink, white, red or purple, depending on the cultivated variety.
It is widely grown as an ornamental because it tolerates heat and flowers over a long period. In Cyprus, it may occur outside cultivation in gardens, pavements, roadsides, heaps of soil and other disturbed habitats.
The species is of considerable medicinal importance because it produces alkaloids used in the manufacture of anticancer medicines. This does not make the plant safe for domestic use. All parts may be toxic if consumed.
8. Vinca major L.
Vinca major is a perennial creeping or sprawling plant known as greater periwinkle. It is native to parts of the Mediterranean, but the Cypriot checklist classifies it among the alien or naturalized taxa.
It has long stems that root where they contact the ground. The leaves are opposite, ovate, glossy and relatively large. Their margins generally bear very small hairs.
The flowers are large, blue-violet or purplish-blue, with five lobes forming a characteristic pinwheel shape.
It is cultivated as an ornamental ground-cover plant. It may escape from gardens and form dense stands in shaded moist habitats, settlement margins, stream valleys and abandoned cultivation.
Its vegetative spread requires monitoring because dense stands may cover the ground and compete with native low-growing vegetation.
Species of uncertain status
9. Vinca herbacea Waldst. & Kit.
Vinca herbacea is a perennial herbaceous plant known as herbaceous periwinkle. Unlike the generally evergreen Vinca major, its stems are more herbaceous and may die back during the unfavourable season.
It has opposite, relatively narrow leaves and blue-violet flowers with five lobes. Its stems may be spreading or ascending.
The species generally occurs in open grassland, scrub, woodland margins and stony habitats. In the Cypriot checklist, it is placed in the category of uncertain status because the presence, origin or persistence of its populations on the island requires confirmation.
Identification of the species
Identification of the Cypriot Apocynaceae is based on growth form, leaf arrangement, flower structure, fruits and the presence of milky latex.
Principal differences
- Nerium oleander is a large evergreen shrub with narrow leathery leaves and large pink or white flowers.
- Cionura erecta, Cynanchum acutum and Cyprinia gracilis are climbing or twining plants.
- Trachomitum venetum forms erect colonies from underground rhizomes and has pink flowers.
- Vincetoxicum canescens has a greyish or softly hairy appearance and small darker flowers.
- Catharanthus roseus has glossy leaves with a conspicuous midrib and flowers in several cultivated colours.
- Vinca major has long creeping stems, large leaves and large blue-violet flowers.
- Vinca herbacea is more herbaceous and has smaller, narrower leaves.
Reliable identification requires examination of:
- erect, creeping or climbing growth,
- the presence and colour of latex,
- leaf arrangement and shape,
- the presence of hairs,
- corolla colour and form,
- corona structure in the former Asclepiadaceae,
- the form of the follicles,
- the silky hairs of the seeds,
- habitat and geographical location.
Toxicity and safety
Many members of the family contain alkaloids, cardiac glycosides and other powerful chemical substances. The presence of medicinal compounds does not mean that the plants are safe for direct use.
Particular caution is required with oleander. All parts of Nerium oleander, whether fresh or dry, are highly poisonous. Oleander branches must not be used to stir food, as cooking skewers or to light fires near food.
The plants should not be eaten, prepared as herbal infusions or applied to the skin without reliable identification and specialist scientific guidance.
Ecological and economic importance
Apocynaceae flowers attract bees, wasps, butterflies, flies and other pollinating insects. In species possessing pollinia, the pollination mechanism is particularly specialized.
Seeds with silky hairs provide a characteristic example of adaptation to wind dispersal. Climbing species add structural diversity to scrubland and offer cover to small animals and invertebrates.
Oleander is an important component of the natural riparian vegetation of Cyprus. Its dense root system contributes to bank stabilization and the vegetation’s resistance to seasonal flooding.
The family also possesses significant economic value. Many species are cultivated as ornamentals, while compounds isolated from Catharanthus roseus are used in modern medicine to manufacture anticancer medicines.
Threats and conservation
The principal threats to the native members of the family in Cyprus include:
- destruction of gorges and scrubland,
- residential and road development,
- clearance of natural vegetation,
- drainage of wetlands,
- diversion or abstraction of water from springs and streams,
- destruction of coastal and brackish habitats,
- tourism development,
- fires,
- herbicide use,
- climate change and prolonged drought.
The restricted populations of the endangered Vincetoxicum canescens and the coastal or wetland habitats of Trachomitum venetum and Cynanchum acutum require particular protection.
Populations of the alien Catharanthus roseus and Vinca major occurring outside cultivation require monitoring, especially where they form dense stands close to natural habitats.
