Text by George Konstantinou
The Asparagaceae, commonly known as the asparagus family, includes perennial herbs, bulbous geophytes, shrubs and tree-like succulents. It belongs to the order Asparagales and has an almost worldwide distribution.
Under its modern taxonomic circumscription, Asparagaceae is a large and morphologically diverse family. It includes genera formerly placed in Hyacinthaceae, Ruscaceae and Agavaceae, such as Muscari, Scilla, Ornithogalum, Ruscus and Agave.
According to the organized checklist of the Cypriot flora, Asparagaceae is represented in Cyprus by 10 genera and 26 taxa:
- 17 native non-endemic taxa,
- 5 endemic species,
- 3 alien or naturalized species,
- no hybrids,
- 1 species of uncertain status.
The ten genera are Agave, Asparagus, Bellevalia, Drimia, Hyacinthella, Hyacinthus, Muscari, Ornithogalum, Ruscus and Scilla.
Principal morphological characteristics
Most Cypriot members are perennial geophytes surviving the hot dry period through underground bulbs. Their leaves and flowers appear when moisture and temperature conditions are suitable.
The leaves are generally simple, linear, lanceolate or strap-shaped and arise from the base. Flowers usually have six tepals and occur in racemes or other terminal inflorescences. The fruit is generally a capsule.
In Asparagus, the true leaves are minute and scale-like. The green needle-like or flattened leaf-like structures are modified stems known as cladodes.
In Ruscus aculeatus, flowers and fruits develop directly on the surface of flattened leaf-like cladodes.
Agave species form large rosettes of succulent, fibrous and frequently spiny leaves. After many years, they produce a very tall flowering stem and generally die following flowering.
Distribution and habitats
In Cyprus, members of the family occur in:
- phrygana and scrubland,
- rocky and stony slopes,
- grassland and fields,
- woodland margins and clearings,
- mountain forests,
- moist valleys and stream banks,
- limestone and igneous substrates,
- coastal and sandy habitats,
- roadsides and disturbed ground,
- gardens and abandoned cultivation.

Species of uncertain status
26. Muscari commutatum Guss.
A bulbous geophyte with a dense inflorescence of dark blue or violet flowers. It flowers mainly from February to April.
Its presence and precise population status in Cyprus require confirmation, and it is therefore classified among taxa of uncertain status.
Identification of the species
Identification of bulbous Asparagaceae frequently requires flowering plants and, in some cases, mature fruits.
Important characters include:
- number, width and form of the leaves,
- whether leaves and flowers appear together,
- height and density of the inflorescence,
- colour and form of the tepals,
- presence of a perianth tube,
- position and length of the stamens,
- form of the pedicels,
- capsule and seeds,
- flowering period,
- elevation and habitat.
Bulbs should not be uprooted for identification, particularly in rare and endemic species.
Ecological and economic importance
The flowers provide nectar and pollen for bees, flies, beetles and other pollinators. Fruits of Ruscus and wild asparagus provide food for birds.
The family includes important edible, ornamental and industrial plants. Asparagus officinalis is cultivated as a vegetable, many bulbs as ornamentals and Agave sisalana as a source of fibre.
Some species contain powerful toxic compounds. Drimia bulbs, Ruscus fruits and other plant parts should not be consumed without reliable knowledge and identification.
Threats and conservation
The principal threats include:
- residential and road development,
- destruction of woodland and wet habitats,
- water abstraction and diversion,
- forest fires,
- quarrying,
- uprooting of bulbs,
- collection of rare plants,
- herbicide use,
- climate change and prolonged drought.
The endemic Scilla lochiae and Scilla morrisii require particular protection. Alien agaves also require monitoring because they can form dense colonies and compete with native vegetation.
