1. Asplenium adiantum-nigrum L.

2. Asplenium ceterach L.

3. Asplenium onopteris L.

4. Asplenium trichomanes subsp. quadrivalens D. E. Mey.

5. Asplenium viride Huds.

Text by George Konstantinou

The Aspleniaceae, commonly known as the spleenwort family, comprises ferns belonging to the order Polypodiales. They are seedless vascular plants that do not produce flowers, fruits or seeds but reproduce by spores.

According exclusively to the organized checklist of the 2,071 taxa of the Cypriot flora, Aspleniaceae is represented in Cyprus by 1 genus and 5 taxa:

  • 4 native non-endemic taxa,
  • no endemic taxa,
  • no alien or naturalized taxa,
  • no hybrids,
  • 1 taxon of uncertain status.

The only genus of the family recorded in Cyprus is Asplenium.

Principal morphological characteristics

Members of the family are usually small or medium-sized perennial ferns. They grow from a short or creeping rhizome bearing fine roots and often covered with brown or dark scales.

Fern leaves are also known as fronds. They may be simply lobed or divided one, two or more times. Their shape varies from elongated to triangular. The stalk and central axis may be green, brown, reddish or almost black.

Groups of sporangia known as sori develop on the lower surface of mature fronds. The spores are produced inside these sporangia. In Aspleniaceae, the sori are usually elongated or linear and positioned along the veins of the frond.

Young sori are normally protected by a thin membrane called an indusium. In Asplenium ceterach, the lower surface of the frond is additionally covered by dense brown or silvery scales.

Reproduction

Ferns do not form flowers or seeds. Spores released from mature sporangia germinate on a suitably moist substrate and form a small gametophyte known as a prothallus.

Water is necessary for fertilization. Most members of the family therefore grow in rocky places, shaded fissures, ravines and old walls retaining some moisture, at least during the rainy season.

Distribution and habitats in Cyprus

Aspleniaceae has an almost worldwide distribution. In Cyprus its members occur mainly in rocky and relatively cool microhabitats, particularly in submontane and mountainous areas.

They grow in:

  • crevices of limestone and igneous rocks,
  • shaded gorges and ravines,
  • moist rocky slopes,
  • old stone walls,
  • walls of wells and terraces,
  • woodland margins,
  • shaded places beneath shrubs and trees.

Some species are adapted to the seasonal drought of Cyprus. Asplenium ceterach, for example, can curl its fronds when dehydrated and unfold them again following rainfall.

Native non-endemic taxa

1. Asplenium adiantum-nigrum L.

Number in the organized checklist: 137.

A native non-endemic perennial fern known as black spleenwort.

It usually has triangular to ovate fronds divided two or three times. The stalk and lower part of the central axis are normally dark brown or almost black and glossy.

It grows in shaded rock crevices, rocky slopes and woodland habitats, mainly in mountainous areas. The shape and degree of division of its fronds can be considerably variable.

2. Asplenium ceterach L.

Number in the organized checklist: 138.

A native non-endemic small perennial fern known as rustyback fern.

Its fronds are elongated and deeply lobed. Their upper surface is green, while the lower surface is densely covered by brown, orange-brown or silvery scales. These scales protect the sporangia and help reduce water loss.

It grows in crevices of rocks and old stone walls. It is one of the most drought-resistant ferns in Cyprus. During dry periods its fronds curl, exposing their scaly lower surface. Following rainfall, they absorb water and unfold again.

3. Asplenium onopteris L.

Number in the organized checklist: 139.

A native non-endemic Mediterranean species known as Irish spleenwort.

It has a dark, glossy stalk and delicate fronds that are usually elongated to triangular and divided two or three times. The lower divisions of the blade are often larger than the others.

In Cyprus it grows in shaded rocky places, ravines, scrub, woodland margins and beneath trees. It may be confused with Asplenium adiantum-nigrum, so identification should be based on a combination of frond and spore characteristics.

4. Asplenium trichomanes subsp. quadrivalens D. E. Mey.

Number in the organized checklist: 140.

A native non-endemic subspecies of the perennial fern Asplenium trichomanes. The species is known as maidenhair spleenwort.

It has narrow, elongated fronds with numerous small, ovate or nearly circular leaflets. The leaflets are arranged along a dark brown or almost black central axis.

It grows in crevices of rocks and stone walls, usually in relatively cool and shaded places. Accurate separation from other members of the Asplenium trichomanes complex may require examination of mature spores and cytological characteristics.

Taxon of uncertain status

5. Asplenium viride Huds.

Number in the organized checklist: 2000.

Asplenium viride, known as green spleenwort, is included in the organized checklist under Uncertain status. It is not listed as a confirmed native taxon of Cyprus.

It is a small perennial fern with narrow fronds and numerous small, ovate or nearly circular leaflets. It resembles Asplenium trichomanes, but the central axis of the frond is green, at least for most of its length, rather than entirely dark.

Across its wider range it is associated with cool, moist and shaded rock crevices, usually in mountainous areas. Its presence and precise status in Cyprus require confirmation through documented records and suitable plant material.

Identification of the Cypriot taxa

The following characters should be examined:

  • the overall shape of the frond,
  • the degree of division of the blade,
  • the shape of the individual leaflets,
  • the colour of the stalk and central axis,
  • the presence and form of the scales,
  • the shape and arrangement of the sori,
  • the size and morphology of the spores,
  • the rock type, altitude and habitat conditions.

Photographs showing only the upper surface of the fronds are not always sufficient. Images of the lower surface, showing the sori and scales, are also required for more reliable identification.

Ecological importance

Aspleniaceae are characteristic components of the rocky and shaded microhabitats of Cyprus.

Their roots and rhizomes help retain fine soil and organic matter within rock fissures. The plants also provide shelter for small invertebrates and contribute to the formation of moist microhabitats.

The ability of some species to survive in very small quantities of substrate and withstand periods of drought is of considerable ecological and scientific interest.

Threats and conservation

The principal potential threats include:

  • destruction of rocky habitats,
  • quarrying and removal of rocks,
  • road and slope works,
  • cleaning or reconstruction of old stone walls,
  • forest fires,
  • prolonged drought,
  • alteration of the local microclimate,
  • climate change,
  • collection of rare plants.

Small and isolated populations of mountain species require particular attention. Their conservation depends on protecting the natural rock substrate, shade, moisture and microclimate of their localities.

For Asplenium viride, confirmation of its presence and status in Cyprus must precede firm conclusions about its distribution or conservation requirements.
