Text by George Konstantinou
The Asteraceae, also known as Compositae and commonly called the aster, daisy, composite or sunflower family, is one of the largest and most diverse families of flowering plants worldwide. It belongs to the order Asterales and includes annual and perennial herbs, shrubs and, less frequently, trees or climbing plants.
According exclusively to the organized checklist of the 2,071 taxa of the Cypriot flora, Asteraceae is represented in Cyprus by 203 taxa:
- 145 native non-endemic taxa,
- 15 endemic taxa of Cyprus,
- 36 alien or naturalized taxa,
- 2 hybrids,
- 5 taxa of uncertain status.
A total of 92 different genera are represented when each genus is counted only once, irrespective of the category in which it occurs.
The complete scientific enumeration of the 145 native non-endemic and 36 alien taxa is provided above. Scientific nomenclature is universal and remains unchanged in the English section.
Principal morphological characteristics
The characteristic feature of the family is the inflorescence known as a capitulum or flower head. What appears to be a single flower is usually a collection of numerous small florets positioned on a common receptacle.
The capitulum is surrounded by modified leaves called bracts, which collectively form the involucre. The florets may be tubular, ray-shaped or bilabiate and may be bisexual, male, female, fertile or sterile.
In daisy-like species, the marginal ray florets resemble petals, while the centre consists of numerous small tubular disc florets. In thistles, all florets are generally tubular. In chicories, lettuces and sow-thistles, all florets are ligulate, and the plants frequently contain white latex.
The anthers are normally united into a tube around the style. The ovary is inferior, and the dry, single-seeded fruit is called a cypsela. In many species it bears a pappus of hairs, scales or bristles that assists wind dispersal.
Distribution and habitats in Cyprus
Asteraceae occur throughout Cyprus, from the coastal zone to the highest peaks of the Troodos range.
They occupy almost every type of habitat:
- sand dunes and rocky coasts,
- saline and coastal habitats,
- phrygana and scrub,
- forests and woodland clearings,
- rocky slopes and cliffs,
- mountain grasslands,
- seasonally moist ground,
- cultivated and abandoned fields,
- roadsides,
- urban and suburban areas,
- soil heaps and other disturbed places.
Many species are annuals completing their life cycle in spring before the intense summer drought. Others are perennial, spiny or woody and possess deep root systems or underground storage organs.
Native non-endemic taxa
The 145 native non-endemic taxa are numbered 141–285 in the organized checklist. Their complete scientific enumeration is provided in the Greek section above.
They include annual spring herbs, perennial plants, coastal and mountain specialists, thistles, daisies, chicories, lettuces, sow-thistles and species adapted to agricultural or naturally disturbed habitats.
The 15 endemic taxa of Cyprus
The endemic members of the family are:
- Anthemis plutonia Meikle — checklist number 1527
- Anthemis tricolor Boiss. — 1528
- Carlina pygmaea (Post) Holmboe — 1529

- Taraxacum holmboei H. Lindb. — 1541
These endemic taxa occur in habitats ranging from coastal and lowland areas to rocky mountain slopes, cliffs, forests and the highest parts of Troodos. Several have restricted distributions and require careful habitat protection.
Alien or naturalized taxa
The checklist contains 36 alien or naturalized taxa, numbered 1691–1726. Their complete scientific enumeration is provided above.
Some were introduced as ornamental or cultivated plants, while others arrived accidentally with seed, animal feed, soil or transported goods. Certain taxa occur only casually, whereas others may establish persistent or expanding populations.
Hybrids
The two hybrid entries are:
- Onopordum ×makrisii Hadjik. & Hand — checklist number 1942
- Sonchus asper subsp. glaucescens × Sonchus oleraceus — 1943
Taxa of uncertain status
The five taxa of uncertain status are:
- Arctium minus (Hill) Bernh. — checklist number 2001
- Carthamus lanatus L. subsp. lanatus — 2002
- Pulicaria sicula (L.) Moris — 2003
- Serratula tinctoria L. — 2004
- Zoegea leptaurea L. — 2005
Their presence, origin or precise status in Cyprus requires further documentation. Their placement in the uncertain category is provisional.
Identification
Identification is based on a combination of characters:
- shape and size of the capitulum,
- presence of ray or tubular florets,
- flower colour,
- number and arrangement of the involucral bracts,
- presence of spines,
- leaf morphology,
- presence of milky latex,
- cypsela morphology,
- presence and structure of the pappus.
In difficult genera such as Anthemis, Centaurea, Crepis, Filago, Lactuca, Picris, Senecio, Sonchus and Taraxacum, general photographs are not always sufficient. Mature flower heads, bracts, fruits and pappus structures must also be examined.
Ecological and economic importance
Asteraceae provide important sources of nectar and pollen for bees, butterflies, beetles, flies and many other insects. Species with different flowering periods support pollinators during much of the year.
Their seeds are eaten by birds and small mammals, while the plants provide food and shelter for numerous invertebrates.
The family includes cultivated and economically important plants such as sunflower, lettuce, chicory and artichoke, as well as aromatic, medicinal and ornamental plants. It also contains agricultural weeds and alien species capable of spreading through natural and cultivated habitats.
Threats and conservation
Important threats to endemic and localized taxa include:
- residential and tourism development,
- road construction,
- quarrying and mining,
- fires,
- overgrazing or abandonment of traditional grazing,
- destruction of coastal habitats,
- roadside clearing and herbicide use,
- invasive alien plants,
- prolonged drought and climate change.
Protecting highly localized species such as Centaurea akamantis requires conservation of their natural sites, population monitoring and avoidance of disturbance in the rocky habitats where they grow.
