Τα 16 γένη είναι τα Alkanna, Amsinckia, Anchusa, Asperugo, Borago, Buglossoides, Cynoglossum, Echium, Heliotropium, Lithodora, Myosotis, Neatostema, Nonea, Onosma, Phacelia και Rochelia.

Text by George Konstantinou

The Boraginaceae, commonly known as the borage family or forget-me-not family, belongs to the order Boraginales. It includes mainly annual and perennial herbs, together with some subshrubs and shrubs.

Many members of the family can be recognized by their rough or hairy stems and leaves, characteristically coiled inflorescences and flowers with five fused petals.

According exclusively to the organized checklist of the 2,071 taxa of the Cypriot flora, Boraginaceae is represented in Cyprus by 16 genera and 47 taxa:

  • 38 native non-endemic taxa,
  • 3 endemic taxa of Cyprus,
  • 5 alien or naturalized taxa,
  • no hybrids,
  • 1 taxon of uncertain status.

The 16 genera are Alkanna, Amsinckia, Anchusa, Asperugo, Borago, Buglossoides, Cynoglossum, Echium, Heliotropium, Lithodora, Myosotis, Neatostema, Nonea, Onosma, Phacelia and Rochelia.

Principal morphological characteristics

Most members of the family are annual, biennial or perennial herbs. Some species of Onosma grow as perennial subshrubs or low woody shrubs.

The stems and leaves are frequently covered with dense, stiff or rough hairs. In some species the hairs grow from small swollen bases and provide important diagnostic characters.

The leaves are usually simple, entire and without stipules. Lower leaves may form a basal rosette, while stem leaves are generally arranged alternately.

The inflorescences are often one-sided and coiled like a scorpion’s tail. As the plant develops and its flowers open, the inflorescence gradually uncoils.

The flowers are normally bisexual and radially symmetrical, with five sepals, five fused petals and five stamens. The corolla may be tubular, funnel-shaped or wheel-shaped and may be white, yellow, pale blue, blue, pink, purple or red.

At maturity, the fruit usually divides into four single-seeded nutlets. In Cynoglossum and Rochelia, these nutlets may bear hooks or other structures that attach to animal fur and clothing.

Distribution and habitats in Cyprus

Boraginaceae occur from the coastal zone to the highest parts of the Troodos range.

They grow in:

  • sand dunes and coastal soils,
  • phrygana and scrub,
  • rocky and stony slopes,
  • limestone and igneous substrates,
  • forests and woodland clearings,
  • mountain grasslands,
  • cultivated and abandoned fields,
  • roadsides and path margins,
  • urban and other disturbed places.

Many annual species emerge following the winter rains, flower in spring and complete their life cycle before the summer drought.

Native non-endemic taxa

The 38 native non-endemic taxa are numbered 290–327 in the organized checklist. Their complete scientific enumeration is provided in the Greek section above because scientific nomenclature remains unchanged in English.

They belong to the genera Alkanna, Anchusa, Asperugo, Buglossoides, Cynoglossum, Echium, Heliotropium, Lithodora, Myosotis, Neatostema, Nonea, Onosma and Rochelia.

The three endemic species of Cyprus

1. Cynoglossum troodi H. Lindb.

Number in the organized checklist: 1542.

Cynoglossum troodi is endemic to Cyprus and is associated mainly with the Troodos mountain range.

It is a herbaceous plant with hairy stems and simple leaves. Its flowers develop in characteristic coiled inflorescences. The fruit divides into nutlets bearing structures that can attach to animal fur or other objects.

It grows in mountain, stony or woodland habitats. Its restricted global distribution makes it an important element of the natural heritage of Cyprus.

2. Onosma caespitosa Kotschy

Number in the organized checklist: 1543.

Onosma caespitosa is endemic to Cyprus and is listed in the Red Data Book of the Flora of Cyprus as Vulnerable (VU).

It is a low, perennial and densely hairy plant forming compact tufts. Its flowers are tubular and nodding, as in many members of the genus Onosma.

It grows in rocky and stony places. Its small and restricted populations are vulnerable to local habitat alterations.

3. Onosma troodi Kotschy

Number in the organized checklist: 1544.

Onosma troodi is endemic to Cyprus and is associated with the mountain habitats of Troodos. It is listed in the Red Data Book as Vulnerable (VU).

It is a perennial, strongly hairy plant with narrow leaves and tubular, usually nodding flowers. The stiff hairs of its leaves and stems are characteristic of the genus.

It grows on rocky slopes, in stony places and in open mountain habitats. Its conservation depends on protecting the natural sites where it occurs.

Alien or naturalized taxa

1. Amsinckia lycopsoides Lehm.

Checklist number: 1729.

An annual alien plant of American origin, with hairy stems and small yellow or orange-yellow flowers. It may occur in fields and disturbed soils.

2. Borago officinalis L.

Checklist number: 1730.

Commonly known as borage, it is an annual, strongly hairy plant with distinctive blue, star-shaped flowers.

It is cultivated as an edible, aromatic, bee-attracting or ornamental plant and may escape from cultivation.

3. Heliotropium curassavicum L.

Checklist number: 1731.

An alien species with succulent, glaucous-green leaves and small white or pale violet flowers. It is often associated with coastal, saline or disturbed ground.

4. Myosotis sylvatica Hoffm.

Checklist number: 1732.

A herbaceous plant known as wood forget-me-not. It is cultivated as an ornamental for its small blue flowers and may occur casually outside gardens.

5. Phacelia tanacetifolia Benth.

Checklist number: 1733.

An annual plant of American origin known as lacy phacelia. It is cultivated as a bee plant, green manure, ground cover or ornamental.

It produces abundant nectar and attracts many bees and other pollinating insects.

Taxon of uncertain status

Alkanna orientalis Boiss.

Checklist number: 2007.

Alkanna orientalis is included under Uncertain status. Its presence, origin or precise status in Cyprus requires further documentation.

It is a perennial hairy herb with yellow flowers. It should not be presented as a confirmed native species of Cyprus while it remains in this provisional category.

Identification

The following features should be examined:

  • form and density of the hairs,
  • presence of swollen hair bases,
  • leaf morphology,
  • arrangement of the inflorescence,
  • shape and colour of the corolla,
  • length of the corolla tube,
  • position of the stamens,
  • form of the calyx,
  • morphology of the mature nutlets.

General photographs are not always sufficient. In difficult genera such as Anchusa, Buglossoides, Cynoglossum, Myosotis and Onosma, clear photographs of the hairs, calyx, corolla and mature fruits are required.

Ecological importance

Many Boraginaceae provide nectar and pollen for bees, butterflies and other insects. Species of Anchusa, Echium, Onosma, Borago and Phacelia may be important food sources for pollinators.

Hooked fruits are dispersed by animals, while other nutlets are transported by gravity, water or human activity.

The endemic species are important components of mountain and rocky ecosystems and have considerable scientific and biogeographical value.

Uses and precautions

Some members of the family have traditionally been used as dye, edible, aromatic or medicinal plants. The roots of Alkanna tinctoria contain red pigments, while Borago officinalis is cultivated in several countries for its leaves, flowers or oil.

However, several Boraginaceae may contain pyrrolizidine alkaloids or other bioactive substances. Traditional use does not demonstrate that a plant is safe for consumption or medicinal treatment.

Threats and conservation

The principal potential threats include:

  • destruction of rocky and mountain habitats,
  • quarrying and road works,
  • fires,
  • overgrazing or intense trampling,
  • land clearance and deep ploughing,
  • herbicide use,
  • collection of rare plants,
  • invasion by alien species,
  • prolonged drought and climate change.

Particular attention is required for populations of Onosma caespitosa and Onosma troodi, both classified as Vulnerable. Their conservation requires protection of natural rocky habitats and continued population monitoring.
