Text by George Konstantinou
The Brassicaceae, also known as Cruciferae and commonly called the mustard family, cabbage family or crucifer family, belongs to the order Brassicales. It includes mainly annual, biennial or perennial herbs and, less frequently, subshrubs.
The older name Cruciferae refers to the cross-shaped arrangement of the four petals. Many members contain glucosinolates and produce the characteristic smell or pungent taste of mustard, cabbage and related plants.
According exclusively to the organized checklist of the 2,071 taxa of the Cypriot flora, Brassicaceae is represented in Cyprus by 50 genera and 99 taxa:
- 71 native non-endemic taxa,
- 10 endemic taxa of Cyprus,
- 16 alien or naturalized taxa,
- no hybrids,
- 2 taxa of uncertain status.
Principal morphological characteristics
Most Brassicaceae are herbs with a taproot. The leaves are generally alternate, simple or pinnately divided and lack stipules. Lower leaves frequently form a basal rosette.
The flowers are usually bisexual and radially symmetrical. They possess:
- four free sepals,
- four free petals arranged in the form of a cross,
- six stamens, four long and two short,
- one superior ovary.
This characteristic arrangement of the stamens is known as tetradynamy and is an important feature of the family.
The petals may be white, yellow, pink, purple or violet. The inflorescences are normally racemes and frequently elongate as the fruits mature.
An elongated fruit is called a silique, while a relatively short and broad fruit is called a silicle. In some genera the fruit is indehiscent, divided into segments, flattened, winged or strongly inflated.
Distribution and habitats in Cyprus
Brassicaceae occur throughout Cyprus, from the coast to the highest peaks of the Troodos range.
They grow in:
- sand dunes and beaches,
- saline and coastal soils,
- phrygana and scrub,
- rocky slopes and cliffs,
- forests and mountain clearings,
- grasslands,
- cultivated and abandoned fields,
- moist ground and stream banks,
- roadsides,
- urban and other disturbed places.
Many species are annuals that germinate following the first rains, flower in winter or spring and complete their life cycle before the summer drought.

The two taxa of uncertain status
1. Fibigia eriocarpa (DC.) Boiss.
Checklist number: 2008.
2. Lepidium spinosum Ard.
Checklist number: 2009.
The presence, origin or precise status of both taxa in Cyprus requires further documentation. They should not be presented as confirmed native plants while they remain in the uncertain-status category.
Identification
The following characteristics should be examined:
- colour and size of the petals,
- form of the sepals,
- form and density of the hairs,
- arrangement of the leaves,
- morphology of basal and stem leaves,
- length of the fruit stalk,
- shape, size and opening mechanism of the fruit,
- arrangement, size and surface of the seeds.
The mature fruit is frequently more important than the flower for reliable identification. Genera such as Alyssum, Arabis, Draba, Lepidium, Matthiola, Odontarrhena and Sisymbrium may require careful examination with a hand lens.
Ecological and economic importance
The flowers provide nectar and pollen for bees, butterflies, flies, beetles and other insects. Many annual species form an important part of the spring vegetation.
The family includes important crops such as:
- cabbage, broccoli and cauliflower,
- oilseed rape,
- turnip,
- radish,
- rocket,
- mustard,
- watercress.
The plants frequently contain glucosinolates. When their tissues are damaged, compounds responsible for the pungent taste and characteristic smell of many species are produced.
Threats and conservation
The principal threats to endemic taxa include:
- destruction of rocky and mountain habitats,
- quarrying and mining,
- road and building works,
- fires,
- overgrazing and trampling,
- roadside clearing,
- herbicide use,
- collection of rare plants,
- invasion by alien species,
- prolonged drought and climate change.
Particular protection is required for Brassica hilarionis, Erysimum kykkoticum and Arabis kennedyae, as well as endemic species with highly restricted distributions or specialized geological requirements.
