1. Campanula veneris Carlström
2. Solenopsis antiphonitis Hadjik. & Hand
Legousia perfoliata (L.) Britton

Text by George Konstantinou
The Campanulaceae, commonly known as the bellflower family, belongs to the order Asterales. It includes mainly annual, biennial and perennial herbs, although worldwide it also contains shrubs, climbing plants and, more rarely, small trees.
The family name is derived from the genus Campanula and the Latin word campanula, meaning a small bell, referring to the characteristic form of the corolla in many species.
According exclusively to the organized checklist of the 2,071 taxa of the Cypriot flora, Campanulaceae is represented in Cyprus by 3 genera and 14 taxa:
- 10 native non-endemic taxa,
- 2 endemic species of Cyprus,
- 1 alien or naturalized taxon,
- no hybrids,
- 1 taxon of uncertain status.
The three genera recorded in the checklist are Campanula, Legousia and Solenopsis.
Principal morphological characteristics
The Cypriot members of the family are mainly small or medium-sized herbs. Some are very small annual plants with short life cycles, while others are larger perennials.
The leaves are simple, lack stipules and may be arranged alternately, oppositely or, more rarely, in whorls. Lower leaves may differ considerably from upper stem leaves.
The flowers are usually bisexual and radially symmetrical. The calyx and corolla normally consist of five parts. The five petals are fused and form a tubular, funnel-shaped, wheel-shaped or bell-shaped corolla.
Flower colour varies from white and pale lilac to light blue, deep blue or violet. The ovary is normally inferior, and the fruit is a capsule containing numerous small seeds.
In many Campanulaceae, pollen is presented secondarily on hairs along the style. The style grows through the anther tube, collecting the pollen and presenting it to pollinators.
Distribution and habitats in Cyprus
Campanulaceae occur from the coastal zone to the highest parts of the Troodos range.
They grow in:
- rocky slopes and rock crevices,
- limestone cliffs,
- stony ground,
- phrygana and scrub,
- forests and woodland clearings,
- mountain grasslands,
- cultivated and abandoned fields,
- seasonally moist ground,
- roadsides and other disturbed places.
Small annual species usually emerge following the winter rains, flower in spring and complete their life cycle before the intense summer drought.
The 10 native non-endemic taxa
1. Campanula delicatula Boiss.
Number in the organized checklist: 399.
A native non-endemic species and small herb. It grows mainly in rocky or stony places and bears small bell-shaped flowers.
Identification is based on leaf morphology, pedicel length, calyx lobes and corolla shape.
2. Campanula erinus L.
Number in the organized checklist: 400.
A very small annual plant known as annual bellflower. It has slender, frequently branched stems and small blue or violet flowers.
It grows in rock crevices, old walls, stony soils and other open places. Its small size makes it easy to overlook.
3. Campanula fastigiata Schult.
Number in the organized checklist: 401.
A small annual species with slender stems and small flowers. It grows in open, dry or stony soils and places with sparse vegetation.
Reliable identification is based on the combined morphology of the calyx, corolla and capsule.
4. Campanula peregrina L.
Number in the organized checklist: 402.
A native non-endemic perennial herb with relatively large and conspicuous blue to blue-violet flowers.
In Cyprus it is recorded from sea level to approximately 1,375 metres. It grows mainly in shaded and moist places, along streams, near springs, in ravines and in moist woodland habitats.
It flowers mainly from July to October, when relatively few native Cypriot plants are in bloom.
5. Campanula podocarpa Boiss.
Number in the organized checklist: 403.
A native non-endemic species with blue or violet bell-shaped flowers. It grows mainly on rocky slopes, in rock fissures and other stony places.
The form of the capsule, calyx lobes and pedicels provides important identification characters.
6. Legousia falcata (Ten.) Janch.
Number in the organized checklist: 404.
An annual herb with slender stems and small violet or blue flowers. It grows mainly in fields, open ground and other seasonally moist places.
Its narrow and frequently curved calyx lobes provide a useful diagnostic character.
7. Legousia hybrida (L.) Delarbre
Number in the organized checklist: 405.
A small annual plant of cultivated and open ground. It usually has small violet flowers that may not open fully.
Identification requires careful examination of the calyx, corolla and mature capsule.
8. Legousia speculum-veneris (L.) Chaix
Number in the organized checklist: 406.
An annual plant known as Venus’s looking-glass. It has distinctive, relatively broad violet or blue-violet flowers with an open, almost wheel-shaped corolla.
It occurs in cultivated fields, fallow land and other open places. Agricultural intensification and herbicide use may reduce its populations.
9. Solenopsis annua (Greuter & al.) Hand & Christodoulou
Number in the organized checklist: 407.
A small annual plant with a slender main root and small flowers. It grows in seasonally moist or open ground.
Its separation from related species is based on the colour and size of the corolla, form of the calyx lobes and capsule characteristics.
10. Solenopsis bivonae (Tineo) M. B. Crespo & al.
Number in the organized checklist: 408.
A small herb with flowers usually displaying conspicuous blue or bluish margins. It is associated with seasonally moist ground, open sites and areas with low vegetation.
Reliable identification requires comparison with the other species of the genus, particularly when mature fruits are absent.
The two endemic species of Cyprus
1. Campanula veneris Carlström
Number in the organized checklist: 1555.
Campanula veneris is endemic to Cyprus. In older records, Cypriot material had been misidentified as Campanula drabifolia.
It is a small herb with blue to violet flowers. It grows in rocky and stony places, frequently inside small fissures where a limited amount of soil accumulates.
Its natural global distribution is restricted to Cyprus. Protecting its Cypriot populations is therefore essential for the global conservation of the species.
2. Solenopsis antiphonitis Hadjik. & Hand
Number in the organized checklist: 1556.
Solenopsis antiphonitis is endemic to Cyprus. It is a small annual plant with a slender main root.
Its corolla is white, often tinged with lilac, and approximately 5–6.5 millimetres long. These features help distinguish it from the other Cypriot species of the genus.
It grows in seasonally moist or open ground. Its small size and restricted distribution make the protection of its known sites and the avoidance of disturbance during its growth and flowering periods essential.
Alien or naturalized taxon
Legousia perfoliata (L.) Britton
Number in the organized checklist: 1752.
Legousia perfoliata is included in the alien or naturalized category.
It is an annual herb with erect stems and small violet flowers. Its upper leaves may clasp the stem, a feature reflected in the epithet perfoliata.
It may occur in fields, gardens, roadsides and other disturbed soils. It should not be presented as a native species of Cyprus.
Taxon of uncertain status
Legousia pentagonia (L.) Thell.
Number in the organized checklist: 2010.
Legousia pentagonia is included under Uncertain status. Its presence, origin or precise status in Cyprus requires further documentation.
It is an annual plant with violet to blue-violet flowers. It may be confused with other species of Legousia, and examination of the calyx, corolla and mature fruits is therefore required.
Identification of the Cypriot taxa
The following features should be examined:
- annual or perennial growth,
- overall size of the plant,
- form and arrangement of the leaves,
- shape and colour of the corolla,
- length of the corolla tube and lobes,
- form and length of the calyx lobes,
- position and length of the pedicels,
- form and opening mechanism of the capsule,
- habitat and flowering period.
Photographs should show the entire plant, lateral and frontal views of the flower, the calyx and mature fruits.
Ecological importance
The flowers provide nectar and pollen for bees, flies, butterflies and other insects. The large flowers of Campanula species are particularly conspicuous and attract various pollinators.
The small annual species form part of the seasonal flora of fields, rocky places and temporarily moist ground.
The two endemic species have particular biogeographical and scientific value because their natural global distribution is restricted to Cyprus.
Threats and conservation
The principal potential threats include:
- destruction of rocky habitats,
- road and building works,
- quarrying,
- drainage of seasonally moist ground,
- deep ploughing and agricultural intensification,
- herbicide use,
- roadside clearing,
- fires,
- overgrazing or intense trampling,
- prolonged drought and climate change.
For Campanula veneris and Solenopsis antiphonitis, it is essential to conserve their known sites, avoid destruction of their substrate and monitor their populations.
