Η οικογένεια Caryophyllaceae, γνωστή ως οικογένεια των γαρυφαλλίδων και στα αγγλικά ως pink family ή carnation family, είναι μεγάλη οικογένεια αγγειόσπερμων φυτών που ανήκει στην τάξη Caryophyllales.

Περιλαμβάνει κυρίως μονοετή ή πολυετή ποώδη φυτά και, σπανιότερα, μικρούς θάμνους. Πολλά μέλη της είναι προσαρμοσμένα σε ξηρά, βραχώδη, αμμώδη ή ορεινά περιβάλλοντα.

Σύμφωνα με τον οργανωμένο κατάλογο της κυπριακής χλωρίδας, η οικογένεια Caryophyllaceae αντιπροσωπεύεται στην Κύπρο από 25 γένη και 93 taxa:

  • 72 ιθαγενή μη ενδημικά taxa,
  • 11 ενδημικά taxa της Κύπρου,
  • 5 ξενικά taxa,
  • κανένα υβρίδιο,
  • 5 taxa αβέβαιης κατάστασης.

Βασικά μορφολογικά χαρακτηριστικά

Τα περισσότερα μέλη της οικογένειας είναι μονοετή ή πολυετή ποώδη φυτά. Οι βλαστοί είναι συχνά διογκωμένοι στους κόμβους, ένα χαρακτηριστικό που παρατηρείται εύκολα σε πολλά είδη.

Τα φύλλα είναι συνήθως απλά, αντίθετα και ακέραια. Συχνά είναι στενά, γραμμοειδή ή λογχοειδή και δεν φέρουν παράφυλλα. Σε ορισμένα γένη είναι μικρά και σχηματίζουν πυκνές συστάδες ή μαξιλαρόμορφες τούφες.

Τα άνθη είναι συνήθως ερμαφρόδιτα και ακτινόμορφα. Έχουν κατά κανόνα τέσσερα ή πέντε σέπαλα και ισάριθμα πέταλα. Τα πέταλα μπορεί να είναι ακέραια, εγκοπτόμενα ή βαθιά διαιρεμένα. Σε πολλά είδη του γένους Silene ο κάλυκας είναι σωληνοειδής και τα πέταλα σχηματίζουν χαρακτηριστική στεφάνη.

Ο καρπός είναι συνήθως κάψα, η οποία ανοίγει με δόντια ή βαλβίδες και περιέχει πολυάριθμους μικρούς σπόρους. Σε ορισμένα γένη ο καρπός είναι μικρός, ξηρός και μονόσπερμος.

Εξάπλωση και ενδιαιτήματα

Η οικογένεια Caryophyllaceae έχει σχεδόν παγκόσμια εξάπλωση, με ιδιαίτερα μεγάλη ποικιλότητα στις εύκρατες περιοχές του Βόρειου Ημισφαιρίου και στη Μεσόγειο.

Στην Κύπρο τα μέλη της απαντούν σε μεγάλο εύρος ενδιαιτημάτων:

  • φρυγανότοπους και θαμνώνες,
  • βραχώδεις πλαγιές και ασβεστολιθικά πρανή,
  • σχισμές βράχων και γκρεμούς,
  • αμμώδεις και βραχώδεις ακτές,
  • αλυκές και παράκτια αλατούχα εδάφη,
  • δάση και δασικά ξέφωτα,
  • ορεινές και υποαλπικές θέσεις,
  • καλλιεργημένους και εγκαταλειμμένους αγρούς,
  • άκρες δρόμων και μονοπατιών,
  • τοίχους, αυλές και άλλες διαταραγμένες θέσεις.

Αρκετά είδη είναι μικρά ετήσια φυτά που ολοκληρώνουν τον βιολογικό τους κύκλο κατά τη διάρκεια της υγρής περιόδου. Άλλα είναι πολυετή και εξειδικευμένα σε βραχώδη ή ορεινά ενδιαιτήματα.

Αναγνώριση

Η αναγνώριση των Caryophyllaceae βασίζεται σε συνδυασμό χαρακτηριστικών:

  • τον αριθμό των σεπάλων και των πετάλων,
  • την παρουσία ελεύθερων ή ενωμένων σεπάλων,
  • το σχήμα και τον βαθμό διαίρεσης των πετάλων,
  • τον αριθμό των στύλων,
  • τον τρόπο ανοίγματος της κάψας,
  • τη μορφή και τη μικροσκοπική επιφάνεια των σπόρων,
  • την παρουσία αδενωδών ή μη αδενωδών τριχών.

Η εξέταση μόνο μιας φωτογραφίας του άνθους δεν επαρκεί πάντοτε. Για αρκετά είδη απαιτείται η παρατήρηση ώριμων καρπών, σπόρων, καλύκων και τριχών με μεγεθυντικό φακό ή στερεοσκόπιο.

Οικολογική σημασία

Τα άνθη πολλών ειδών παράγουν νέκταρ και γύρη και αποτελούν πηγή τροφής για μέλισσες, πεταλούδες, νυχτοπεταλούδες και άλλα έντομα. Οι σπόροι καταναλώνονται από πουλιά και μικρά ζώα.

Τα μικρά ετήσια είδη καλύπτουν γυμνά ή διαταραγμένα εδάφη κατά την υγρή περίοδο, ενώ τα πολυετή είδη των βράχων συμμετέχουν σε εξειδικευμένες φυτοκοινότητες.

Τα 11 ενδημικά taxa αποτελούν σημαντικό μέρος της μοναδικής φυσικής κληρονομιάς της Κύπρου και παρουσιάζουν ιδιαίτερο επιστημονικό και βιογεωγραφικό ενδιαφέρον.

Απειλές και προστασία

Οι κυριότερες πιθανές απειλές για τα σπάνια και ενδημικά μέλη της οικογένειας περιλαμβάνουν:

  • την καταστροφή ή υποβάθμιση βραχωδών και ορεινών οικοτόπων,
  • τις δασικές πυρκαγιές,
  • την οδοποιία και την οικιστική ανάπτυξη,
  • τη λειτουργία λατομείων,
  • την υπερβόσκηση,
  • την τουριστική πίεση και το ποδοπάτημα,
  • τη συλλογή φυτών,
  • την εξάπλωση ξενικών ειδών,
  • την παρατεταμένη ξηρασία και την κλιματική αλλαγή.

Η προστασία τους προϋποθέτει τη διατήρηση των φυσικών τους ενδιαιτημάτων, την αποφυγή καταστροφής γνωστών θέσεων και τη συστηματική παρακολούθηση των μικρών ή απομονωμένων πληθυσμών.

The Caryophyllaceae, commonly known as the pink family or carnation family, is a large family of flowering plants belonging to the order Caryophyllales.

It comprises mainly annual or perennial herbs and, less frequently, small shrubs. Many of its members are adapted to dry, rocky, sandy or mountainous environments.

According to the organized checklist of the Cypriot flora, Caryophyllaceae is represented in Cyprus by 25 genera and 93 taxa:

  • 72 native non-endemic taxa,
  • 11 endemic taxa of Cyprus,
  • 5 alien taxa,
  • no hybrids,
  • 5 taxa of uncertain status.

Principal morphological characteristics

Most members of the family are annual or perennial herbs. Their stems are often swollen at the nodes, a feature that can be readily observed in many species.

The leaves are generally simple, opposite and entire. They are frequently narrow, linear or lanceolate and usually lack stipules. In some genera, the leaves are small and form dense tufts or cushion-like growths.

The flowers are usually bisexual and radially symmetrical. They generally have four or five sepals and the same number of petals. The petals may be entire, notched or deeply divided. In many species of Silene, the calyx is tubular and the petals form a characteristic corolla.

The fruit is usually a capsule that opens by teeth or valves and contains numerous small seeds. In some genera, the fruit is small, dry and one-seeded.

Distribution and habitats

Caryophyllaceae has an almost worldwide distribution, with particularly high diversity in the temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere and the Mediterranean.

In Cyprus, its members occur in a wide range of habitats:

  • phrygana and scrublands,
  • rocky slopes and limestone escarpments,
  • rock crevices and cliffs,
  • sandy and rocky coasts,
  • salt marshes and coastal saline soils,
  • forests and woodland clearings,
  • montane and subalpine sites,
  • cultivated and abandoned fields,
  • roadsides and path margins,
  • walls, courtyards and other disturbed places.

Several species are small annual plants that complete their life cycle during the wet season. Others are perennials specialized for rocky or mountainous habitats.

Identification

Identification of Caryophyllaceae is based on a combination of characters:

  • the arrangement and shape of the leaves,
  • the form and venation of the calyx,
  • the number of sepals and petals,
  • the presence of free or fused sepals,
  • the shape and degree of division of the petals,
  • the number of styles,
  • the manner in which the capsule opens,
  • the form and microscopic surface of the seeds,
  • the presence of glandular or non-glandular hairs.

Examination of a photograph of the flower alone is not always sufficient. Several species require the observation of mature fruits, seeds, calyces and hairs using a hand lens or stereomicroscope.

Ecological importance

The flowers of many species produce nectar and pollen and provide food for bees, butterflies, moths and other insects. Their seeds are consumed by birds and small animals.

Small annual species cover bare or disturbed ground during the wet season, while rock-dwelling perennials participate in specialized plant communities.

The 11 endemic taxa constitute an important component of Cyprus’s unique natural heritage and are of particular scientific and biogeographical interest.

Threats and protection

The principal potential threats to rare and endemic members of the family include:

  • destruction or degradation of rocky and mountainous habitats,
  • forest fires,
  • road and residential development,
  • quarrying,
  • overgrazing,
  • tourism pressure and trampling,
  • plant collection,
