1568. Helianthemum obtusifolium Dunal

1771. Cistus ladanifer L.

Cistus

  1. Cistus ×pauranthus Demoly · Hybrid
  2. Cistus ×akamantis Demoly · Hybrid
  3. Cistus ×skanbergii Lojac. · Hybrid

Taxon αβέβαιης κατάστασης

2021. Helianthemum nummularium (L.) Mill.

Text by George Konstantinou

The Cistaceae, commonly known as the rock-rose family, is a family of flowering plants belonging to the order Malvales. It comprises mainly small or medium-sized shrubs, subshrubs and herbs that are particularly characteristic of Mediterranean vegetation.

According to the organized checklist of the Cypriot flora, Cistaceae is represented in Cyprus by 4 genera and 24 taxa:

  • 18 native non-endemic taxa,
  • 1 endemic species of Cyprus,
  • 1 alien species,
  • 3 hybrids,
  • 1 taxon of uncertain status.

The four genera included in the checklist are Cistus, Fumana, Helianthemum and Tuberaria.

Principal morphological characteristics

Members of the family are generally shrubs, subshrubs or annual and perennial herbs. Many species are aromatic and covered with simple, stellate or glandular hairs.

The leaves are simple, usually opposite and entire. They may be flat or have margins rolled downwards. In several species, they are thick, wrinkled or densely hairy, characteristics that reduce water loss.

The flowers are usually bisexual, radially symmetrical and conspicuous. They have five petals, which may be white, yellow, pink or purple. In some species, a dark spot occurs at the base of each petal.

The petals are frequently thin and crumpled and fall soon after the flower opens. Despite the short life of each flower, the plants produce many flowers successively throughout the flowering season.

The stamens are numerous and form a conspicuous group around the centre of the flower. The fruit is a dry capsule that opens by valves and contains numerous small seeds.

Distribution and habitats

Cistaceae occurs mainly in the warm-temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere. Its greatest diversity is found in the Mediterranean, where its species are important components of phrygana, maquis and open pine forests.

In Cyprus, species of the family occur in:

  • phrygana and scrublands,
  • open pine forests and woodland clearings,
  • rocky and stony slopes,
  • limestone and igneous substrates,
  • dry grasslands,
  • coastal and lowland sites,
  • mountainous habitats,
  • roadsides and path margins,
  • abandoned fields and other open places.

Many species are adapted to intense sunlight, summer drought, nutrient-poor soils and periodic fires.

The endemic species of Cyprus

1568. Helianthemum obtusifolium Dunal

Helianthemum obtusifolium is an endemic species of Cyprus and the only endemic member of Cistaceae in the organized checklist.

It is a low perennial subshrub or chamaephyte. It bears small leaves and yellow flowers with five petals. The inner sepals are membranous and become conspicuously enlarged during fruiting.

It occurs from sea level to approximately 925 metres. It grows mainly in dry, open and stony places, phrygana, low scrub and sparsely vegetated slopes.

Its flowering period extends mainly from February to May. Its entire native global distribution is restricted to Cyprus.

The alien species

1771. Cistus ladanifer L.

Cistus ladanifer is an alien species in Cyprus. It is a large, evergreen and strongly aromatic shrub, commonly known in English as gum rockrose.

It is native to the western Mediterranean. Its natural distribution mainly includes the Iberian Peninsula, southern France and north-western Africa, while it has been introduced into Cyprus.

Its leaves are narrow, dark green and sticky because of the aromatic resin they secrete. The large flowers are white and frequently bear a characteristic dark purple or reddish-brown spot at the base of each petal.

It is cultivated as an ornamental plant and may occur outside cultivated sites. Its presence and spread in natural habitats require monitoring.

Hybrids

The genus Cistus frequently undergoes natural hybridization where related species grow together. Hybrids may combine morphological characteristics of their parent plants, and reliable identification requires careful examination.

The organized checklist includes 3 hybrids:

Cistus

  1. Cistus ×pauranthus Demoly · Hybrid
  2. Cistus ×akamantis Demoly · Hybrid
  3. Cistus ×skanbergii Lojac. · Hybrid

Taxon of uncertain status

2021. Helianthemum nummularium (L.) Mill.

Helianthemum nummularium is included in the checklist as a species of uncertain status. Its presence in Cyprus or the precise status of the relevant records requires further confirmation.

Adaptations to the Mediterranean environment

Cistaceae possess characteristic adaptations that allow them to survive in the hot and dry Mediterranean climate:

  • small or narrow leaves,
  • thick protective tissues,
  • dense hairs,
  • glandular and resinous secretions,
  • rolled leaf margins,
  • deep or extensive root systems,
  • seasonal reduction of leaf area,
  • numerous seeds capable of remaining viable in the soil for long periods.

Some species can resprout after fire, while others regenerate mainly from seeds whose germination is promoted by heat or by changes caused by fire in the soil.

Identification of the genera

The four genera of the family in Cyprus can generally be distinguished as follows:

  • Cistus comprises mainly larger shrubs with conspicuous white, pink or purple flowers.
  • Fumana comprises low subshrubs with narrow leaves and smaller yellow flowers.
  • Helianthemum comprises annual or perennial herbs and subshrubs, generally with yellow flowers.
  • Tuberaria comprises small, usually annual herbs with yellow flowers that often bear dark spots at the bases of their petals.

Identification of the species requires examination of the leaves, hairs, stipules, number and size of the sepals, flower stalks, capsules and seeds.

Ecological importance

The flowers of Cistaceae produce abundant pollen and attract bees, beetles and other insects. Although many species do not produce nectar, they provide an important pollen source during spring.

The shrubs provide cover and shelter for reptiles, small mammals and invertebrates. Their root systems help stabilize the soil on dry and rocky slopes.

Species of the family are important components of Mediterranean phrygana and scrublands and participate actively in the natural regeneration of vegetation following disturbance.

Threats and protection

Potential threats to rare and endemic members of the family include:

  • destruction of phrygana and natural scrublands,
  • residential and tourism development,
  • road construction,
  • quarrying,
  • frequent or repeated fires,
  • overgrazing,
  • trampling,
  • spread of alien plants,
  • prolonged drought and climate change.

The protection of the endemic Helianthemum obtusifolium depends on conserving the dry, open and stony habitats in which it grows.
