535. Cleome iberica DC.

536. Cleome ornithopodioides L.

The Cleomaceae, commonly known as the cleome family, is a family of flowering plants belonging to the order Brassicales. It comprises mainly annual or perennial herbs and, less frequently, shrubs or small trees.

Its members show morphological similarities to the family Brassicaceae, within which they were included in older taxonomic treatments. Cleomaceae is now recognized as a separate family.

According to the organized checklist of the Cypriot flora, Cleomaceae is represented in Cyprus by 1 genus and 2 taxa:

  • 2 native non-endemic species,
  • no endemic taxa,
  • no alien taxa,
  • no hybrids,
  • no taxa of uncertain status.

The only genus of the family included in the checklist is Cleome.

Principal morphological characteristics

Members of the family are generally herbs with erect or branched stems. They may be glabrous or covered with simple or glandular hairs.

The leaves are arranged alternately along the stems. They may be simple or palmately compound, with three or more leaflets. In the two Cypriot species, the leaves generally consist of three leaflets.

The flowers are bisexual and produced in terminal inflorescences. They have four sepals and four petals, which do not always form the characteristic cross observed in Brassicaceae.

The stamens generally number four or more and may be of unequal length. In some members of the family, the petals, stamens or ovary are borne on short elongated stalks.

The fruit is dry, elongated and contains several seeds. It resembles a pod externally, but its construction and manner of opening differ from the characteristic siliqua or silicle of Brassicaceae.

Distribution and habitats

Cleomaceae has a wide distribution, mainly in tropical, subtropical and warm-temperate regions. Many species are adapted to dry, open and seasonally disturbed environments.

In Cyprus, the two species of Cleome occur mainly in:

  • dry and open fields,
  • abandoned cultivated land,
  • roadsides and path margins,
  • stony and gravelly sites,
  • dry slopes,
  • open ground with sparse vegetation,
  • other seasonally disturbed places.

Both are therophytes: annual plants that complete their life cycle within one growing season and survive the unfavourable season as seeds.

Native non-endemic species

535. Cleome iberica DC.

Cleome iberica is a native non-endemic species of Cyprus. It is an annual herb with an erect and generally branched stem.

The leaves are alternate and usually consist of three narrow or elongated leaflets. The stem, leaves and inflorescences may bear glandular hairs.

The flowers are produced in elongated terminal inflorescences. Their petals are small and may be whitish, yellowish or pinkish. As the stem grows, new flowers appear in the upper part of the inflorescence while the fruits mature below.

The fruits are elongated and develop on conspicuous stalks. They contain several small seeds.

In Cyprus, it is recorded as a native non-endemic therophyte. It flowers mainly from June to September.

Its native distribution extends from Ukraine to western Asia. It includes Cyprus, the East Aegean Islands, Türkiye, the Middle East, the Caucasus and neighbouring regions.

536. Cleome ornithopodioides L.

Cleome ornithopodioides is also a native non-endemic annual herb.

Its leaves are alternate and generally divided into three narrow to elongated leaflets. The flowers are produced in terminal inflorescences and bear four small petals.

The sepals are oblong, with obtuse or shortly pointed tips, glabrous or bearing very few sessile glands, and united at their bases. The flower and fruit stalks are almost glabrous.

The fruits are elongated and slender and contain numerous small seeds.

In Cyprus, it is recorded at elevations of approximately 150–1,225 metres. It flowers mainly from June to September.

Its native distribution extends from south-eastern Europe to Türkiye and Cyprus. It occurs mainly in dry fields, open stony places and other seasonally disturbed soils.

Endemic taxa

No endemic taxon belonging to Cleomaceae is included in the organized checklist of the Cypriot flora.

Alien taxa

No alien taxon belonging to Cleomaceae is included in the organized checklist.

Hybrids

No hybrid belonging to Cleomaceae is included in the organized checklist.

Taxa of uncertain status

No taxon of uncertain status belonging to Cleomaceae is included in the organized checklist.

Distinguishing the two species

Distinguishing the two Cypriot species requires careful examination of mature plants. The most important characters include:

  • the form and indumentum of the sepals,
  • the presence and density of glandular hairs,
  • the shape of the leaflets,
  • the length of the flower and fruit stalks,
  • the length and width of the fruits,
  • the form and surface of the seeds.

Photographs of the entire plant or flowers alone are not always sufficient for reliable identification. Close photographs of the sepals, glandular hairs, mature fruits and seeds are useful.

Relationship with Brassicaceae

Cleomaceae and Brassicaceae belong to the same order, Brassicales, and share certain characteristics, including flowers with four petals and elongated fruits.

In Cleomaceae, however:

  • the petals are not always arranged in a regular cross,
  • the stamens may differ in arrangement and length,
  • the ovary may be borne on an elongated base,
  • the leaves are frequently palmately compound,
  • the internal structure of the fruits differs.

These characteristics support the recognition of Cleomaceae as a separate family.

Ecological importance

The flowers of the two species provide pollen and possibly nectar for small bees, flies and other insects. Their seeds provide food for small animals and may remain in the soil until suitable conditions for germination develop.

As annual plants, both species exploit temporary open spaces created by natural or human disturbance. They contribute to the seasonal plant diversity of dry fields and stony habitats.

Threats and protection

Possible local threats include:

  • intensification of agriculture,
  • use of herbicides,
  • deep or frequent ploughing,
  • destruction of field margins,
  • road construction and widening,
  • residential development,
  • dumping of rubble,
  • prolonged drought.

The conservation of open agricultural and stony habitats, together with avoiding damage to known localities during the growing and fruiting seasons, contributes to the protection of their populations.
