537. Colchicum pusillum Sieber

538. Colchicum stevenii Kunth

Το Flora of Cyprus το καταγράφει με κατηγορία του Κόκκινου Βιβλίου Regionally Extinct?

1569. Colchicum troodi Kotschy

The Colchicaceae, commonly known as the colchicum family, is a family of monocotyledonous flowering plants belonging to the order Liliales.

It comprises mainly perennial herbs with underground corms, tubers or rhizomes. Many members spend most of the year dormant below ground and produce their flowers or leaves only during favourable periods.

According to the organized checklist of the Cypriot flora, Colchicaceae is represented in Cyprus by 1 genus and 3 taxa:

  • 2 native non-endemic species,
  • 1 endemic species of Cyprus,
  • no alien taxa,
  • no hybrids,
  • no taxa of uncertain status.

The only genus of the family included in the checklist is Colchicum.

Principal morphological characteristics

The Cypriot members of the family are cormous geophytes. They possess an underground corm surrounded by protective tunics, in which nutrients and water are stored.

The leaves develop from the base of the plant. They are simple, sessile, linear to lanceolate and have parallel venation, as is typical of monocotyledonous plants.

The flowers appear close to the soil surface. They may be white, pink, lilac or purplish-pink and superficially resemble the flowers of crocuses.

The perianth consists of six tepals, which are fused at the base to form a long tube. The flowers bear six stamens, while the ovary remains below the soil surface.

The fruit is a capsule containing several seeds. It often appears above ground some time after flowering, when the leaves develop and the fruit stalk elongates.

Difference between Colchicum and Crocus

Species of Colchicum can easily be confused with crocuses belonging to the genus Crocus. They are, however, members of different families.

The principal diagnostic characters are:

  • Colchicum flowers have six stamens, whereas Crocus flowers have three.
  • In Colchicum, the ovary is situated deep below the soil.
  • The styles and stigmas differ in number and form.
  • The leaves of the two genera differ morphologically.
  • The fruits of Colchicum often appear some time after flowering.

Counting the stamens is one of the most useful characters for quickly distinguishing the two genera.

Distribution and habitats

Colchicaceae occurs in temperate, subtropical and tropical regions of Europe, Africa, Asia, Australasia and North America.

The genus Colchicum has considerable diversity in the Mediterranean, south-eastern Europe, the Middle East and western Asia.

In Cyprus, the three species occur in different types of habitats:

  • dry grasslands and open grassy sites,
  • phrygana and scrublands,
  • stony and rocky slopes,
  • woodland clearings and forest margins,
  • open pine forests,
  • mountain grasslands,
  • sandy or gravelly soils,
  • seasonally moist depressions.

The emergence of the flowers is generally associated with the first rains and falling temperatures during autumn or early winter.

Native non-endemic species

537. Colchicum pusillum Sieber

Colchicum pusillum is a native non-endemic species of Cyprus. It is a small perennial cormous geophyte.

Its flowers usually appear in autumn or early winter, often before the leaves have fully developed. The tepals are narrow and white to pale pink or lilac.

Because of its small size and the low position of its flowers, the plant can easily remain unnoticed among stones and low vegetation.

In Cyprus, it occurs from sea level to approximately 925 metres. It grows in open, dry or stony places, low scrub, phrygana and grasslands.

It flowers mainly from November to December.

Its native distribution extends from the Aegean Islands to Cyprus and includes Greece and Crete.

538. Colchicum stevenii Kunth

Colchicum stevenii is a native non-endemic cormous geophyte of the eastern Mediterranean.

Its flowers appear during autumn and are generally pale pink to lilac. They develop close to the soil surface and possess a long underground tube.

In Cyprus, it has been recorded at a very low elevation of approximately 25 metres. It flowers mainly from October to December.

Flora of Cyprus lists it under the Red Data Book category Regionally Extinct? (RE?). The question mark indicates uncertainty and the need to confirm whether the species is still present in Cyprus.

Its native distribution includes Cyprus, the East Aegean Islands, Türkiye, Lebanon, Syria and Palestine.

Searching for the species at its historical or potentially suitable localities during the flowering season is important for determining whether any populations still survive in Cyprus.

The endemic species of Cyprus

1569. Colchicum troodi Kotschy

Colchicum troodi is an endemic species of Cyprus. Its entire native global distribution is restricted to the island.

It is a perennial cormous geophyte. Its flowers generally appear close to the soil surface and may be whitish, pink or lilac. The leaves develop from the base and may appear with the flowers or at a later stage, depending on conditions.

Despite its name, it is not restricted exclusively to the Troodos region. In Cyprus, it is recorded across a broad altitudinal range, from sea level to approximately 1,950 metres.

It occurs in open stony places, grasslands, scrublands, woodland clearings, mountain slopes and other habitats with seasonal moisture.

Flora of Cyprus follows the taxonomic treatment recognizing Colchicum troodi as a distinct species. Its taxonomic separation is based on a combination of characters involving the flowers, leaves, underground corm and seeds.

Alien taxa

No alien taxon belonging to Colchicaceae is included in the organized checklist of the Cypriot flora.

Hybrids

No hybrid belonging to Colchicaceae is included in the organized checklist.

Taxa of uncertain status

No taxon of uncertain status belonging to Colchicaceae is included in the organized checklist.

The RE? category reported for Colchicum stevenii is a Red Data Book assessment and does not alter its placement in the organized checklist as a native non-endemic species.

Toxicity

Species of Colchicum contain biologically active and toxic substances, the best known of which is colchicine. All parts of the plants should be regarded as potentially poisonous.

They must not be collected for consumption or used as homemade medicinal plants. Their resemblance to other geophytes increases the risk of misidentification.

They should be observed and photographed without uprooting or tasting any part of the plant.

Identification of the species

Reliable separation of the three Cypriot species can be difficult. Identification requires examination of:

  • the number of flowers per plant,
  • the length and width of the tepals,
  • flower colour and venation,
  • the position of the anthers,
  • the form of the styles and stigmas,
  • the number, width and length of the leaves,
  • whether the leaves are present during flowering,
  • the form of the underground corm and its tunics,
  • the form and surface of the seeds,
  • the flowering season and elevation.

For reliable documentation, photographs should show the flower from above and from the side, the stamens and stigmas, the leaves and the natural habitat. Plants should not be uprooted for photography.

Ecological importance

The autumn flowers of Colchicum provide pollen and other floral resources for insects during a period when relatively few plants are in flower.

As geophytes, they survive the long dry season within their underground corms. When favourable conditions return, they can flower rapidly and take advantage of autumn moisture.

The endemic Colchicum troodi is an important component of the natural and evolutionary heritage of Cyprus.

Threats and protection

Possible threats include:

  • residential and tourism development,
  • road construction or widening,
  • ploughing and agricultural intensification,
  • use of herbicides,
  • destruction of grasslands and open natural habitats,
  • trampling,
  • collection or uprooting of plants,
  • forest fires,
  • prolonged drought and climate change.

Particular attention should be given to searching for and confirming any surviving populations of Colchicum stevenii, as well as conserving the known localities of the endemic Colchicum troodi.
